I’m gonna be heading out for my final youth season this weekend. Can’t believe it’s been over a decade now since I first went out with my dad. I do have a question though. I’m not that big on calling, I noramlly find my spot and stay there for the day. I was wondering if any of you guys use any calls or rattles etc...

When I got my first compound, I was 10 and I struggled to keep it steady and pull it back after more than 3 times; due to my young spaghetti arms. So I asked my dad for a pull-up bar and some straw bales. With pull-ups and a crap ton of practice I built up my arms and shoulders. Now that I am older I just work out in the gym with my friends so we can maintain shape for when season comes around. My friends and I normally focus on exercises like shoulder press, incline and regular bench press, along various leg days so long hikes aren't too bad. Then we normally bust out our compounds in August to start practicing again.

Aim for something about 40lbs, draw length depends on her. I personally would look on craigslist so you can save money while she is young and then go spend when she is ready for full bow or crossbow. Times, if its used I wouldn't mind a few scrapes or accidents as much as I would if I just bought a nice PSE. I bought my first compound 8 years ago when I was 10 after saving all of my grass mowing money, it was a bear.

I'm in as well. This is my last year to hunt during youth season so if I take one then will it count too?

I know how you guys feel. I've lived in carmel for most of my life. And after almost 18 years here everything has changed. Cornfields are now neighborhoods etc... Only good woods is owned by an apartment complex too.

I was thinking about using my Mossberg 500 with a twenty inch smooth bore barrel and a red dot scope for deer since I already have them. I was wondering if anybody else has or was useing something similar and what were your experiences or opinions. I am hoping for since I have not patterned any foster slugs with this combination yet for better than pie plate accuracy at around 75 yards. I got a mossberg 500 from my uncle he gave it to me with a red dot. It works like a dream. I say if it works for you and you're accurate with it I say go for it.

This year I'm bringing my .22 deer hunting along side my shotgun cause I always see a crap ton of squirrels and rabbits when I'm deer hunting. I thought to myself heck, why not shoot some of them if the my deer luck is crap.

Hot or not my lawn and all of my neighbors lawns still need to be mowed it just needs to be done. Besides the sun won't kill me as long as I stay hydrated. On the bright side bass fishing has been good for me these last few weeks.

I have had the same compound for a while now as well. I personally would stick with you current bow, since you have experience with that particular bow and a 60lb is enough. I love the feel of my bow, all of the practice in the off season and every day I'm out during season my bow has produced results and I am happy with its performance. My logic is if it still gets the job done well, then I am in no hurry to replace. Since obviously whatever I'm doing is working, as of right now at least.

I got some help from my grandpa, he is gonna let me borrow his two man stand. Currently I'm scouting out the area where my Dad took me hunting for the first time over a decade ago. We haven't been there in a while, but he always mentions it when ever we pass it so I figured that would be the perfect place.

I learned by cutting a small hole in the skin on the back then putting my fingers on either side then pulling in oppisite directions. Other than that everything else is the exact same. I’m more of a rabbit person though, and my grandpa showed me the airman way. You grab the rabbit with both hands close to the top legs and then you squeeze towards the stomach. After that you continue to squeeze while you bring the rabbit way above your head then fling it between your legs with its bottom legs going between your legs first. It took me a few tries the first time but sure enough it works. Not sure if it will work on a squirrel though might have to ask my grandpa. Anyone else done this method for squirrel or rabbit?

I turn 18 towards the end of this year. If I buy a youth license will it be good until the end of the year, or until I turn 18?

I am turning 18 this year; one thing I have noticed more and more is that my Dad has always valued myself having a good time when we go out hunting over his time. He has always put me in the best spots and given me so many opportunities to get my deer, even though he still needs to fill his own tags. However most years he doesn’t even get to fill his tags because he is so focused on me. With me going off to college after this next school year, this upcoming deer season will be the last one that we share before I go off to college. So this year I want to flip roles, I want him to get his deer before I go and get mine since he has always put me first ever since we started going hunting together. If you guys have any ideas on what I could do to make this year the most memerable it would be greatly appreciated.

I’ll take a few shots before I go out. I’m checking for two things first is that I am making sure my gun is still functioning and the spread is how I like it, and second is that I am still able to shoot straight which is always a helpful thing to be able to do.

I have some nice lacrosse waders that came with tags. I traded to get on Craigslist. (It was a great deal) I have a few calls that I bought at cabelas. My number one question is about decoys (what kind do you all get mallard, teal etc...) are there any tricks to making a spread seem larger without buying more decoys? What size shot do you guys use? As for a blind I actually built one with my friends out 2” pvc pipe some plywood and some thin insulation in the walls and cheap clearance carpet and it didn’t cost to much either it also breaks down into pieces you can carry. One of the good things I have going for me right now is that I do have a few friends who are interested as well and one of their dads used to waterfowl hunt when he was a kid but didn’t give us any advice.

Nope. Call all you want if no birds then best caller won't help. Find birds. Lots of spots with birds. You find them and you will not have a problem finding an experienced guy to bring gear and teach you the ropes. What area are you in? Finally...you will learn ducks HATE Indiana I am in central Indiana around Indianapolis. I normally go south with my dad to go hunting. I say this is another reason to go out hunting and to try something new. Since you never known if you are going to like it unless you try.

So I want to get into water fowling, however I lack an experienced waterfowler to show me the do’s and dont’s. I have limited knowledge of this kind of hunting; and I like to do a lot off season so my seasons go smooth. So I was wondering what you guys do when season is out, any projects, and what tips can you give?

I haven't ran into turkeys in my usual spots for a few years now. Haven't had the time to go out scouting due to school, but either way I am still excited. I am trying to get out for April 22 the Sunday of youth. Wish I could go out Saturday, but I couldn't get off work.
