Last year I farted around too long and jumped right into shooting after a long drought....not wise, especially after 40. I got a case of tendonitis or something in the shoulder to where I couldn't begin to pull my bow until half of October was gone.
Well, this year I was more careful. About two months ago I began pulling a 55# recurve to warm things up; just a few times every other day at first, backing off for a day or two when things got sore.( I kept the bow out where I would see it and remember to do it.) Then I would gradually increase the "reps," eventually adding extended holds to increase my strength. Finally I dusted off the compound and began shooting a little each day. This greatly improved things VS last year.
Anyone else do anything to "warm up" or increase your strength?

I start 8/1 every year or very close to it. Pulled out yellow wasp target, but that's it yesterday. At 57 it takes me some time to get ready. When I do watch TV, I bring my bow with me and dry pull it and hold it through the commercials. At 1st, just one or two commercial, but by OCT 1 through all commercials. Seems to work. Just be careful on the dry release.

The wife & I started regular workouts a couple of years ago. I think that it is likely the rowing machine that strengthened the muscles that are used to draw. Anyhow, I turned 70 in June, and I can draw my 55# compound more easily than I have been able to for a few years.

Got my bow out and shot it a couple days ago. Right shoulder sounded like an old squeaky door in a horror film as I drew back the first couple times! Shot great though

I never stop training. Six days a week I workout with weights focusing on shoulders, back, arms, chest and abs. I have three specific workouts that take an hour +/-. I time my workouts and wear a heart rate monitor. I only rest 20 seconds between sets so as to keep my heart rate up. Each workout is comprised of 13 different exercises and the sets are 4x12, meaning four sets of 12 reps for each exercise. My goal is also to shoot 1,000 arrows a month. Last month I got 875 down range. I wimped out in those 90 degree high humidity days. I am turning 66 on Sunday and my bow is maxed at 60 lbs. I feel confident that I could go with a higher draw weight but all the good advice I have gotten on this forum is don't and I listened. Maybe I am a little over the top but it gives me purpose and I enjoy it all. In fact I look forward to it.

That is one of the best archery focused exercises based on my research. I have six different rowing focused exercises alternating between high and low position rowing two of which I do every time I workout. Keep it up. Our ages are just a number!

When I got my first compound, I was 10 and I struggled to keep it steady and pull it back after more than 3 times; due to my young spaghetti arms. So I asked my dad for a pull-up bar and some straw bales. With pull-ups and a crap ton of practice I built up my arms and shoulders. Now that I am older I just work out in the gym with my friends so we can maintain shape for when season comes around. My friends and I normally focus on exercises like shoulder press, incline and regular bench press, along various leg days so long hikes aren't too bad. Then we normally bust out our compounds in August to start practicing again.
