Step 13: get to your stand 1st well before 1st light so other hunters push the deer to you and then you drag it past them.

I'm young and stupid so I follow the motto "the weather doesn't keep me from going hunting, I keep me from going hunting." There'sa few things I do to keep it fun 1. I still hunt cause why not I've always wanted to get better, and perfect time to practice in the rain 2. I'll bring an umbrealla if I'm going to my stand/blind. It's light easy to pack and it works. You can even get the tree to hold it above you and now you got the next best thing to a roof. 3. I'll hunt from a blind and actually pack real food cause noise and scents travel less in rain. 4. I'll bring headphones because it's raining it's not like I'm gonna hear anything. If I do hear deer that's cause it's 5ft away and I should've already shot it lmao. I see deer in rain, and a plus is you'll likely have the woods to yourself. I'll typically go out unless it's so bad that I'd pull over on the side of the road. A good rule of thumb is if the squirrels aren't moving or making noise then most likely every living thing around you is hunkered down and you should be too so go home.

I just won't wear my outer layers when I'm going to my stand. I'll keep them in my pack and put them on before I get to my spot. I don't care if my base layer smells as long as I'm wearing my coveralls and my jacket that smell wont really get out. Additionally I put a few drops of doe urine up wind and near the switch backs I'm hunting to help cover any scent I do have. Times being in a tree stand or blind really helps. That being said I will occasionally spray my boots cause they do tend to smell really bad and sometimes makes me wanna stay away lmao.

Was finally able to get my first buck ever at around 35 yards!! Was able to go out with my dad as a pair for the first time this season, and I sat in my stand for less than 2 hours in total today. In a spot that I hadn't even had the chance to hunt yet. I dragged him over 1 mile but it was well worth it. He went around 20 yards max before he crashed. Also, this was on heavily pressured public land of all places. I feel like I just found a unicorn.

So I've been debating about whether or not I should get into this, I like knowing what I'm getting myself into before I go and start throwing money at yet another hunting item. After some digging into this I still have a few questions. How much are you guys spending on your setups? I've been having some trouble finding stuff that is budget friendly. Would a quality rock climbing harness work just as well as some of the hunting harnesses I've seen? Comfort aside, from a functionality stand point, would it work?

Found a great spot after scouting the these past few days. I got in my stand earlier than normal this morning and right before legal shooting light I see 4 does or at least I think they were lmao, just marching along a trail to my left about 30 yards away. Oh man the frustration. Now all I got are a bunch of chatty squirrel friends and turkeys on the next hill. Im currently sitting in my light hang stand with my 3 climbing sticks. It's my new lightweight setup that I got at the end of last season. Unfortunately I have to leave early today to care of some stuff before monday. But I'll be out again tomorrow night. Oh the joy of having a life outside of hunting season.

I go to IUPUI. Most of my days I have around 7+hrs in between classes that I'll spend out in the woods since I'm trying to find new spots. With my current schedule I actually have time to scout, setup different stands and trail cameras etc... which is very nice. All this prep stuff is a little foreign to me because its just something I never did before, I'd just go and hunt the same area-ish because it was successful for me. My grandparents are in Mooresville so that is where I keep all my gear since I'm not allowed to have some of my hunting stuff like my bow in my dorm. Well howdy neighbor! I got my BS in Geology from IUPUI. Now I work across the street in the Government Center. Are you in the old converted hospital, Ball Hall? That was my dorm (and the only dorm) when I was there, but they really started adding more on campus housing as I was finishing up. Then they also closed the hotel and converted it to student housing. LOL - my cousin just started at IUPUI this fall. During orientation her Dad asked where he could park his tank What's your major? I am majoring in energy engineering.

So I am now in college in Indy, and I have been fitting in a decent amount of hunting through out the week due to my class schedule. Now as much I like hunting alone, hunting with a partner is always better, its more fun and social. So if anybody from Indy, Mooresville, Martinsville etc... hunts either just comment on the post and I'll reach out or you can send me a message. Thanks all, Good luck out there.

I'm out once again with my compound trying to put horns on the ground. Only thing I have seen so far has been an unaware hunter trying to be a loud ninja wearing no orange.

My grandfather prefers a lawn chair but he will take a bucket if he doesnt have a chair. i remember last year id been out for 3 days then on the last day my grandfather sits down maybe 40 yards from my climber within my view so i could help him if he needed it and he in a bright red lawn chair and not even 50 minutes goes by and the next thing I hear is shot right next to me. He got a nice doe about 20 yards into the wood line. He said he had to show me how it was done.

The height I go depends on my surroundings. Like if im on a hill or in a little creek area I try to find the height that will allow me to see deer quicker and have shooting lanes that are towards where I believe the deer will come from. Normally that ends up being around 20-35ft Im not to concerned about height since i have a good treestand harness. however i try to go a little lower if its really windy or im on a somewhat thinner tree. dont want to be swaying too much when i take a shot.

Another consideration is where exactly you will be? Some small public places near college that allows plenty of time to explore may be much better than a private place hours away you only see a few times a year. I haven't exactly decided where I wanna go yet but they go all across from Trine down to University of Southern Indiana. While im likely to stay in state I have gotten accepted to go out of state and if i do get that “offer I cant refuse” i’ll probably take it. If i do decide to go out of state I will still hunt Indiana but only when im in state like around holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas.

Somehow, someway get a foot in the door. I work in a rural area and literally have land thrown at me to deer hunt. I'm in customers houses for several hours and usually talking to them about this and that gets them comfortable with you. I never have asked for permission. It's the foot in the door and them feeling comfortable. All depends on where you are asking too. Northern Indiana closer to the cities is going to be harder than southern Indiana. Some people have better luck than others. My dad could get permission in the middle of new york city from the president of Peta. He never took a no as a no. By that I mean he'd ask, told no, said okay but b.s. about this or that for a bit. Surprisingly it's worked quite a bit. I havent done much work in rural areas since I am in Hamilton but I have thought about potentially offering to work for a place to hunt is that little to far out there? While I am good at working with my hands and do have some manual labor experience I feel that by offering to work i risk biting off more than i can chew.

On the doe in heat topic..first off if you want a doe kill one early in archery & dont mess with them in November. I never shoot a doe in gun season. I try to normally shoot what ever presents itself to me since I cant gurantee ill have time to hunt later in the season or if I’ll even see a buck for that matter. This year is different since ive already gotten my doe during archery now I can focus on going for antlers or until I feel like the freezer is getting a low again

had 4 does and a nice 8 point come by at around 7:29 this morning I knew there where people across from us and didnt want to risk shooting near them. next thing i know this late arrival came in and didnt see us and scared them off. i passed him on our way out and he apologized we shook hands wished each other success in the future and a happy thanksgiving and we parted ways. sure i was mad that he spooked them but atleast he owned up to it and wasnt a jerk. i also want to point out that this is the first mature buck ive ever seen on public land alive so maybe this little bit of good fortune is exactly what my season needs
