Update. I went with a buddy of mine up by Michigan city yesterday and we had a great day! Caught 12 coho and 3 lake trout, we let a few of the bigger ones go cause why not haha. Did end up with 3 5lb cohos though and that was pretty nice the average was about 3lbs though. The lake trout were around 6-8lbs Did you charter or did you bring your own boat? DETAILS. my buddy has his own boat and gear and called me up and was like let’s go! Apparently we’re gonna start doing this more and more once college is out for the summer haha. The waves were up to 5ft at times. we were fishing when the storm decided to cut up north. the fish gave us zero downtime, we just couldn’t keep a line in the water

I’ve migrated a little bit north to Kokomo from my usual Indianapolis. I’ve been wanting to try salmon fishing. Yes I do know it’s a bit of a drive, but 2hrs up north is better than the usual 3.5 early in the morning. I’ve got quality bass fishing rods and bait casters and some medium heavy spinning rods. I’m squared away with my license and trout/salmon stamp. I guess my question is, what kind of tackle do you all recommend, and would my current rods and reels be alright? Also just a side note I use 50-60lb braid on my reels

I haven’t seen a single deer yet but the day is still young! I’m also a believer of everything is a deer until proven otherwise haha 😂 that being said I’ve had a few otters and a beaver to keep me company so I’m not entirely by myself. On a different note I’m in the same spot with my cams Boone I have a lack of mature buck movement during daylight

Out of general curiosity when do you guys typically start calling and when do y’all end. I’m sitting here in my stand and was just wondering. Except for this year I’ve solely hunted pressured public and never called and I was curious cause you read everywhere go ahead and call when I’m low pressure areas. I was wondering if it was too late to do some experimenting and get some practice in and what kinda call would you guys “givin it the good ol’ college try” with

Hunt the evenings on a food source is the best bet, but I wouldn’t overlook hunting mornings with bucks searching for the late estrous does!! This is what I’m banking on right now I got tons of mature bucks in my area that have seen no pressure their entire lives I’m the 1st only person to hunt this piece in a decade, and I got a estrus bleat and I’m hoping to at least spark curiosity in one of em. Now as far as morning vs evening I’m a big believer in the all day sit I don’t really care if it’s not as effective as some say it brings me piece of mind that the deer don’t all of sudden go and have party while I’m away. Times when I do hunt public I see tons of afternoon action cause the deer get used to hunts getting down around 11am- noon ish and coming back around 3pm

I am hunting unpressured private in central indiana. I have a good spot set up right around a fence line by a high active area for rubs and scrapes. I was wondering how do you guys approach calling unpressured deer? It's always something I have wanted to try but never had the chance to since I come from hunting pressured public where people abuse calls. I should also mention that I do have multiple mature bucks on cams. They're not too consistent yet they sort of go as they please but show up sometimes 2-3 times a week.

I was at my girlfriends this morning and I remembered its Monday. Every Monday I go and check my cameras and pull pictures. I told her when we 1st met from October-January its hunting season and I'm hers on the weekends but weekday mornings and evenings are my hunting times. She is more than welcome to tag along and come with me. She looked at me and said she thought I was kidding... I said I don't joke about hunting. Soooo now we are at the gas station on our way to go check my trail cams haha. I'll post any good pics it looks like a amazing morning to be in a stand

Im just doing a morning sit to get an idea of deer moevment and while I was setting up i had two 6pts and 1 8pt with a heck of a lot of character cruise past me at about 40yrds around 7:35am i havent seen anything since but I gotta good feeling. I don't plan on shooting today, as I don't wanna tag out too soon haha but hey if he's big enough I'll let it fly. Good luck to everyone out today! may the deer be moving and your arrows shoot true, blood trails easy to follow and no snafus

Congratulations on your good fortune. Is there an observation point you might be able to sit back and watch without going back on the property? Get a better idea how the deer are using it without leaving scent all over the place. Probably what I would do. If you can be patient it might be worth waiting until November to hunt it. Then id put my stands up this winter after season based on what I observed this fall. 25 acres isnt much and wont take much pressure to alert the deer. Be mindful of access and exit routes. Good luck That is my main concern. I don't want to spook them but its just so thick on the edges that you can't really see into it until you get like 15 ft in. I don't want to walk in too far for my tree stands cause there is an old property fence( that isn't the boundary) but would just make a ton of noise to get over. I want to develop it a bit, the deer are used to cars and atvs going through the property and people wandering around for the most part. I like the idea of holding off until November though! I have to remember that I don't really have anyone to compete with this year haha Thanks for the advice!!

I am now an official private land hunter!!!! I was able to gain permission from a family who owns a vineyard and also does garden and has a pumbkin patch. It is a small parcel only 25 acres and it is surrounded by fields corn and soybeans. This property along with the surrounding ones do not have any pressure what so ever! It is some of the only timber in the area and also has a ton grasses and under brush. There is a small river that cuts right through the property too. I scouted for just under an hour a few days ago once I got done with class and I found 3 fresh rubs 4 fresh scrapes and tons of great deer sign. The property owner requests that I only use my bow and that she does not want to even know that I am there so my tree stand locations have to sneaky and hard to spot. But there are tons of great buck sign I currently have cameras set up and I am doing some more scouting and I want to get an idea of how many deer have set up shop in this area. I will post pictures from onx and from my phone here in a bit! I was given full permission to do whatever it takes and manage the deer how I see fit... so with that being said I have zero knowledge of how to set up this little hidden gem. Sorry for the long post I am really excited its only 20 minutes away from my house and I am pumped! Any advice on how to go about managing a new property is welcome

Going back out to my public land spots to go scouting again and set up some cameras. I like to go once in the early summer to get an idea of where the deer are. Then go again before season to see how other hunters who've scouted have been and how they've either impacted the deer movement and where they have setup. So today after my professor is done on zoom im hoping in my car and I'm gonna go setup at different locations. Then do an evening sit from my tree saddle in the area where I plan to be opening day. I wanna get an idea of what its like and so I'm not lost when it comes to be opening morning. Might being posting pics if I get any good ones.

My biggest mistake was that I used to wear multiple layers of wool socks in the winter and mid-fall, but my feet would still end up freezing cold no matter what. I didn't realize until much later that it was because my feet were too warm and they were sweating. Due to the moisture, my feet would start to freeze and had a hard time warming themselves up. So now I wear a low cut moisture wicking running sock with one pair of thin wool during the early season and at max 2 regular wool socks in the winter. I leave just enough space for me to wiggle and bend my toes so I can keep blood flowing. That being said I still hunted even when I thought my feet were gonna fall off haha I'm just too stubborn and optimistic to call it quits on a hunt. I'm done after the sunsets. That's my 2nd thing always be the 1st out and last in you can learn a lot about pressure when you observe not only the deer's patterns but the patterns of other hunters as well.

I've wanted to learn how to waterfowl hunt for forever. I wanted to attend but couldn't get time off work so I didn't register. Glad to know they do these workshops though I'll have to keep an eye out for future ones.

I rough up the ground by the base of my tree and just aim for that when I out of my stand not gonna lie. I don't know if kicking up leaves helps or anything but it brings me peace of mind which is worth something right? lmao

I've been looking to get into saddle hunting for a while now, I tend to rotate pieces of public land based on the pressure. My question is given the fact I am a broke college student, is it worth it to save up more for one of the actual tree saddles like the ones made by tethrd or will a shall we say "fancy" climbing harness work just as well. Basically is the price worth the comfort or are they about the same?
