When I have an essay I need to write. I will bring an iPad along with a camo wrap: That I use for turkey hunting, and I’ll wrap it around my stand then I’ll silently type out my essay. I also prefer to bring an extra sweatshirt when I go out really early so I can use a dim light and read some Tom Clancy while I’m waiting for first light. If I’m hunting from a blind I’ll just bring my homework that I have to do on paper. As I see it I’m going to college to get a good job so that I can one day have my own private land I can manage and hunt that way I don’t have to put up with the struggle that is public hunting.

Instead of live from the stand, I bring you the not as exciting “live from the Desk”. I’m a senior in high school this year and while I have gotten a few college acceptance letters; I still feel the need to be on the school grind. Now I am aware that senioritus is a thing, but I have a personal rule that I don’t allow myself to go hunting unless I’m doing great in school. If I’m doing particularly well I’ll even let my self skip a few days to go out with my dad provided I don’t fall behind. But at the moment here I am doing my 2nd Year IB Physics homework during open study wishing I was out in my own stand or blind or even just sitting on a bucket wishing that I was out hunting. Anybody else wish they out hunting instead of being stuck with school or work for that matter.

My grandpa used to tell me about the moon and the rut when I was little. Other than hearing it I never did anything about it. My thinking is that deer need to eat, sleep, and drink no matter the weather conditions. However I do believe knowledge is power so it would be very interesting to see if stats have been done in Indiana.

I know I am really hyped up. I have been getting some really good trail cam images from a tree a plan to climb overlooking a good meadow with some nice thicket every so often. Wish I could’ve hunted it with my bow, but I didn’t want to see deer and not be able to shoot. Times I’ve got 4 days off planned this November so I can hunt with my grandpa. Who else is ready? Team 13 hope you all are ready to put the smack down on a nice one; cause I got a few I want to put my crosshairs on.

I used to live in an area called Mariemont down that way about 6 years ago. Our last summer down there my dad and I got asked to come out for the upcoming bow season and hunt some deer that were tearing up fancy golf course that our neighbor ran. Unfortunately we ended up moving to Hamilton county before the season started. But I can’t complain I’ve become a way more successful hunter now that I live in Indiana again.

Personally I am not a fan of calling much unless I’m out way early like during youth season. I find that a fawn in distress normally does pretty good before the full pressure of hunting season starts. Since I hunt public land. Before I started to hike way back into the woods to set up my spot I always thought that other hunters around me use calls way too much, and that it doesn’t do anything to help their success. I have succes when I just let the deer go about their bussiness until I decide to shoot one of their buddies or when other hunters come in late and scare the deer towards me since I’m normally far enough back that nobody really hunts back there so the pressure is lighter. I like to think that my future 8 pointer that I’ll shoot this year didn’t make it this far by being stupid.

I never go up in my stand with out my harness. I promised my ma when I got my stand that I would wear it. Thankfully so far I haven’t needed it, but you never know and as the Boy Scouts day always be prepared.

I would go with a 12ga that has a good weight to it and a good butt pad. I personally think its the good all around gun it is great for deer, turkey, birds etc... I would recommend the Hornandy Reduced Recoil Slugs they work great, really accurate, and they do have less recoil. My shoulder liked them when I was younger.

1 Doe for team 13. She scared the crap out of me. I wasn’t expecting anything to come in from behind me. I’m not sure how to post pictures while using my phone.

My grandpa is one of my favorite people to go hunting with. He is the sole reason why I love archery, because he got me a kid bow when I was in 2nd grade and I’ve been hooked ever since. He is an amazing hunting buddy; he is always positive and tells great stories. However, as he has gotten older he hasn’t been able to go out hunting as much as he used to. I want to get him out with me for archery season instead of going out once for firearm season. He doesn’t have the strength to draw back any of my compounds, except for maybe my old youth bow. I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for either compounds or crossbows.I don’t have a price range as my whole family likes the idea of getting my grandpa out in the woods more. It’s when you go hunting with your older family members that the best stories get told. Because as my grandpa told me this past season when he was my age he would wait in a tree for a deer then jump on its back then ride it back to camp before he shot it so he didn’t have to drag it back. How old is your Grandpa? Does he have any health problems? He is in his 70s. He has had his hips and a knee replaced. He has some trouble walking longer distances but other than that he is decent condition he can still climb tree stands and go a decent way into the woods.

I am super pumped. I go on fall break this week and I took off work. So I’m going to be hunting for 5 days straight which hasn’t happened in a few seasons. Hopefully I can start my season off right this year, since last year I came up short.

My first few years that I went out hunting with my dad during youth season I missed a lot. It took me 5 years to get my first deer. My dad always reassured me when ever I did miss. I would always get the deer fever and pull my shots. As time went on though I got better and then soon realized I should just do archery since I practice that a lot more. My dad nags me about it now, and at the start of every season he asks me if I'm ready to miss and watch him get a deer.

If I could find a place to hunt near Hamilton county I’d be hunting more weekends. Since right now I drive about 3hrs. I have been changing my shifts off weekends when deer season comes around just so I can go more for the past few years.

While I am in Hamilton county, I haven’t been able to get access to private land. Therefore by default I’ll be hunting public. Now I know I’m not gonna be the only person out there and with that in mind, how far away should I be from other hunters so I’m not a douche; since I hate it when people sit to close to me when I’m in my stand. Also I had a question about shot size, is No. 2 a good size to use? What do you guys use?

Find a spot that's holding birds, you can either milk it for several shoots or you can go in there a burn it up in one maybe two days. I like to watch the weather for BIG changes then make plans to hunt. Hunting in warm weather just isn't duck hunting. Thanks for the advice. I don’t have anybody to answer my questions so I’ve just been reading up on the forum. Thanks for all the posts you guys have made because they really have been the foundation of my learning.

Last year I went out with my grandfather and he sat down in a nice red lawn chair wearing jeans and green t-shirt, in less than an hour after sunrise he already shot and field dressed his deer. I don't have anything against sitting on the ground I just tend to be up in my stand more now that I'm primarily out with my bow.

What do you guys typically do right before season starts? Any final tips(other than not go) ex: calling advice. I have a few friends who said they would be willing to give this a try with me. While I do lack fowl experience, I have more overall hunting and shooting experience than they do. Any advice with how to deal with completely new and less experienced hunters?

Nope, saving my vacation days for colder weather later in the season. I’m with you on preferring the colder weather. Yet I’ve never been successful during firearm season or any of the later seasons. I’ve only ever been successful during youth season or beginning of archery. So I figure I’m doing something right, not quite sure what it is yet but it’s right.
