I have been thinking about trying to find private land for a while and since I will be on my own by this time next year I figured I might as well start formulating a plan for next season. i dont have much money since ive been saving for college. I was wondering if you guys had any tips and or advice on where to start my search.

Personally i am scared that someone is gonna take my ladder stand if i strap it to a tree and leave it there. So i normally try to stick with my climber. What Im trying to do this year is to try to find more remote public land and later once the off season comes around to hopefully find some private land to hunt (thats the plan at least) since I am going off to college next year I just want to find some place to go hunting where i don't have to worry about whether or not someone is in my spot since my time to spend hunting will be more limited. Come down to the SW and I can take you to a dozen or more ladder stands that have been abandoned. I cant decide if the same guy with a disposable income or if a dozen different guys learned what a terrible idea it was to haul them back there. the only reason i have my ladder stands are because of my grandpa because he can get up into them pretty easy. i completely get the struggle of dragging them out there though, they are a pain and some require multiple trips.

No kidding. I need some. Really been a slow start for me again. Let several does and small bucks walk by, now nothing. Good luck to all. Haha at least you’ve seen some bucks! Starting to think they’re myths in central Indiana anymore I have only seen mature bucks on the ultra rare opportunity to hunt private land (its only happened once on a family friends property before he sold it) other than that i have not seen a live buck with more than 4 points on public land. as a matter of fact ive only ever shot does and antless bucks. so i completely agree with you bucks are mytical especially on public land.

I love my public land hunting spot, however there is only one draw back and one alone, Idiot Hunters. I went out for opening day of firearm season with my dad and grandpa. All was well that morning there were a few other hunters, but not as many as previous years. We talked about where we were going to be and sorted it out since some of us were gonna be kind of close and we agreed to put some more distance between us. Around 9:20 I just saw a nice doe but she was a little far away at the time for me to take the shot at that moment but I was hopeful maybe she might make her way back towards me. Then I heard one distinct noise coming from my right, like someone just pumped their shotgun. I slowly looked over to the direction of the sound but I didn't see anyone so I thought I was just getting nervous, until I saw the doe looking towards the same area that I just looked at then she started to stomp her foot. Next thing I hear is Boom some jerk shot 20 yards right next me. It scared the living crap out of me I had no clue someone was that close. Next thing I see is a guy walk right out of a bramble and he goes right past my stand wearing no orange. Probably why I couldn't see him. That wasn't what made me mad, what really set me off is that I'm clearly visible from all of the area surrounding me I'm wearing my orange vest and a hat so I know that there was no way that the guy couldn't have seen me. I've dealt with a lot of jerks and idiots on public land, but this guy takes the cake. The only good thing about this situation was that he ended up missing his shot. Man if he would actually gotten that doe I would've been livid. I have normally been weary of private land sure it would be nice but dang can it cost a pretty penny. How many of you have had a bad run in with other hunters?

I never have one in the chamber until I am properly situated in my stand. I can't shoot until 30 mins before sunrise so what's the point I am not gonna shoot anything yet. Now you might say the noise but I have a climber and those things can make some noise. Mainly I do it because I don't even want to risk my shotgun going off accidentally. I especially don't want it to go off when I'm raising or lowering it from my stand.

i get to my spot where i park my car around 2-3 hours before first light so that i am always the first one there.Sometimes if i drive to my spot at night ill just sleep in my car since Im 17 and cant get a hotel. I try to be up in my stand an hour or so before first light since my tresstand is a climber it can be a little noisy. i go back a little ways into the woods away from other hunters, but i want I allow time for everything to settle down again. Another benefit to being out so early is that I am always ready for the hunters who arent in the woods for first light to scare deer my way.

When winter sets in I normally wear my facemask which I cut out the area under my nose a little bit that allows me to exhale outside my mask, and ever since then i havent had any problems with my glasses fogging.

I should have all of opening gun weekend with my grandpa. This weekend I am at a paintball event in Anderson. After that I’m planning on going out the Wednesday before thanksgiving and the weekend after thanksgiving. Those are my planned days for hunting not sure if I can fit more in due to school. I should be able to go a few weekends in December though.

Just giving you guys a quick update. I got my hands on a two person stand that Im planning to set it up the Friday before opening day of gun season. This will be the first time that my grandpa and I have ever sat in a stand together instead of our usual ground blind. It’s close to a spot that provided me with a Doe early on for archery.my trail cam is still showing activity. Only issue is with all this rain I have to cross a river to get to the spot I want, while I do have some lacrosse waders I’d prefer not to get swept off my feet. I do have a back up plan that is okay but due to it being opening day I don’t want to deal with tons of other hunters and battling for a good. (Which is the reason why Ive started to cross the river)

If I find another opportunity to hunt private land, I have an old Winchester 94 that shoots like a dream.

Being in Carmel I can attest to the fact that hunting near here is not the best as is it is far and in between. However I’d you can find land to hunt power to you

I know this is a petty old post but I thought I’d should still drop a mention on it. My father and I are up in Carmel. I have heard that there is some good hunting out near Sheridan.

Where would you suggest I go to look up city ordinance laws regarding hunting (I am in a deer reduction zone) and the firing of a projectile within city limits.

I find myself using my bow a lot more these days but I still use my handy dandy shotgun from time to time. I never really used ear protection unless I’m at a range or sighting it in or in the rare case that it is cold and my hat doesn’t cover my ears.

I love my hunting spot. I shot my first deer there and have been going there since I was an apprentice along time ago. However as I’ve gotten older dealing with school, work and girls it has occurred to me that clearing out time to drive over 3 hours one way and then back to go hunting isn’t always probable. But every year I find time to go down with my dad on a Friday night to get to our spot at 12am then setup way before first light so all we have to do is go back to the truck and grab some shut eye before it’s time to get into the woods. It’s those days that I treasure the most, joking with my dad just me and him those days are some of the highlights of my year no what matter the weather is. It takes a certain person to wake up as early as we do to get in the woods and setup before first light and enjoy nature no matter the conditions. And then do it again if we aren’t successful. Hunters are very special people indeed. Hunting isn’t looked fondly upon where I’m at, but I don’t care I love what I do. I might even call myself a hunting addict besides there are worse things to be addicted to then good old outdoors.

I’ve come to like archery season now that i am physically able to pull back a legal bow. When I was younger my dad borrowed my uncle’s compound bow so that I could use one weekend. I still remember the big buck that came out of the timberline right in front of me and the sight of it running away as soon as he heard me not successfully pulling the bow back. I also like how I don’t have to go that far back into the woods because hunting pressure is still light. Now that being said I will go back deep but I am certainly not going back there just to drag a Doe all the way back I’m leaving there with my antler tag filled.
