I haven't gone as far as using hearing protection when deer hunting but do when bird hunting. I may have to start while gun hunting.

Most of the time I barely hear the gun go off when I shoot at deer. I do seem to hear my shotgun when I shoot turkeys. Not sure how that works.

I'm thinking it's too late if it's 10Khz or above I'm done

I have pretty severe hearing loss. I attribute it to lots of ear infections when I was a kid. Not a lot of anti-biotics back then so we just toughed it out. Then stupid me I shot trap a few years with no hearing protection. Now I ALWAYS wear electronic muffs when I shoot and hunt with a gun. I'm trying to protect what little I have left.
Believe it or not just one big BANG can damage your hearing permanently..

I find myself using my bow a lot more these days but I still use my handy dandy shotgun from time to time. I never really used ear protection unless I’m at a range or sighting it in or in the rare case that it is cold and my hat doesn’t cover my ears.

Working construction most of my life never helped but gun fire is what ruined my hearing. Back when you could buy a case of 7.62x59 under $100, we would shoot that up in a hour. No hearing protection of course. What really done it in was a buddies 357 Taurus with ported barrel, one shot and I was done, never been the same!! Now I have ringing in my ears at all times, sounds like summer crickets at night..only all the time.

I won't target shoot, period, without hearing protection. I've never thought about it while hunting and I probably never will.

Hearing protection isn`t necessary for a single gunshot in the field while hunting. At the range, yes. In the field, no.

Generally hearing loss is chronic, not acute. It occurs over time, with repeated exposure to noise at or above 85 decibels.

About 10 years ago, I shot a buck with a .44 mag revolver that started a ringing in my left ear which has not stopped since. I know that the damage is cumulative, this was apparently the shot that pushed me over the line.

I had suffered a 20% hearing loss in my left ear from shooting a .22LR rifle while on the college rifle team while using Sonic II ear plugs. Don't know how it's progressed over time, but I cannot hear crickets from my left ear. I use earplugs that are molded in your ear when shooting shotgun, and wear hearing protection whenever shooting, even going as far as ear plugs AND muffs when shooting anything with a brake on it.
Hearing loss is something that doesn't come back.

Watch "Going deaf from shooting?" on YouTube youtu.be/W7usSqqqWUEI watched this and was surprised at all the information in it and how much of what I thought about hearing loss was WRONG. This opened my eyes big time!! I went for a hearing test 3 weeks later and have hearing aids now. Did not realise how much I could not hear anymore even though the dr said my loss was not to bad. [br Thanks. PS. This vedio follows a shooter thru his dr visit with dr explanation of what has happened and what could happen and why if hearing is not corrected with hearing aids Great vedio

Good advice. And don't forget to wear hearing protection for your routine noisy chores; mowing, chain saw work, weed eater or leaf blower, loud power tools, etc.
If you have to raise your voice to communicate with someone, then the noise levels are high enough that they can damage your hearing.
