Thanks - that might have made the difference this time.

Bad news. Processor thought intact deer had spoiled and shouldn’t be eaten. So I’m now going to work on the quartered deer and hope it tastes ok.

So had a bloodhound arranged for this morning. Hunting is weird. First doe was an awful shot, second was (I thought) a pretty good one. So we started on the “easier” track - the second deer. Hound was amazing and found it in 5 minutes or so, but I never saw any blood. When I field dressed her, was still warm, so she must have expired this morning. So much for my “better” shot. Then the first deer I had shot we found in about a minute, as she’d only made it 75 yards or so from where I shot her. And coyotes had ravaged rear quarter and entrails. Great blood trail the whole way. So the deer I was sure I shouldn’t have tracked, I actually could have found easily, immediately. The deer I thought I probably should have tracked last night I never would have found.
Anyway, I have one at the processor, and quartered the other to save what meat I could. Hate that I didn’t have a quick kill, but feel fortunate that the meat will probably be fine.

I shot two doe tonight, and I'm not proud of either shot. I think one likely expired quickly, but the other may not have. Have a dog tracker meeting me first thing tomorrow morning and hoping we'll recover both deer fairly quickly.
Temperatures are not ideal, but I think it should be cold enough. So the question is really whether or not the coyotes get there before we do.
For those of you who have had to wait before tracking - how often have you had coyotes ruin some of the meat? Were you able to at least save the front half? Did you just bring it to the processor as is or did you try and remove damaged sections in the field?

I just learned that a couple of family friend's sons are sharing a compound bow, and they're significantly different sizes. I'd love to pick a bow up that can be set up properly for the younger/smaller brother.
Anybody got a Diamond Infinite Edge or something adjustable like that sitting unused that you'd sell for a reasonable price?
Thanks, Andrew

Are you sure it isn't poison hemlock? Interesting question. The vast majority was giant ragweed. I used an app to identify it, and I’m pretty sure. However, there were some plants in there with white flowers. And perhaps not coincidentally, I’m dealing with a painful, itchy rash in a very unfortunate area. So…maybe? There was poison ivy everywhere so I assumed it was just that. Who knows.

Hunted this morning - had a small doe and fawn come by within 12 yds of my tree at sunrise and a nice buck about 60 yds away an hour or so later, but he came from downwind side and was very wary. Eventually ran off so I assume he got my wind. Been sitting for an hour this afternoon and just one coyote and a bunch of mosquitoes thus far.

Tried a new to me spot and was disappointed that the entire wooded area near the creek was 7+ foot tall giant ragweed. There are defined deer trails but they’re quite narrow. The stalks knock down easy but catch on everything. There are some areas of blowdown or water flow or something where the weeds are all broke off but those are even harder to fight through. Gave up eventually. Figured even if I found a tree there wouldn’t be a shot through the thick stuff. I know bucks love high stem count security cover and it seems like it fits the bill, but other than hunting the field edge and just guessing where they’ll come out I have no idea how to hunt the place. Anybody else dealt with the stuff?

I picked up a bunch of trash before I left the property. It was pretty bad.

Agree. Take a doe and show some progress for the homeowner. One less doe isn't going to change the opportunity to take a buck there. Do you mean take another doe? Missed the other thread until after I replied. But if homeowner comments were after you’d take one, then yes!

I need some help confirming my thinking on license strategy. In an ideal year, I'll harvest a buck in IN on public or private land in archery, firearms, or muzzleloader seasons. I'm hunting the firearms hunt at Atterbury, so I bought 1 military hunt tag, as that allows me to use the military tag if I harvest a buck at Atterbury.
Given that I already have the deer bundle and a bonus antlerless, I don't think there's any point buying a second military tag. If I get a chance to take a doe there, I will be able to use either the bundle or the bonus antlerless for that deer, and save the military tag for a buck, right?

I switched to saddle hunting a couple years ago and really like it. I own tethrd products but also have Shikar sticks and a couple other saddles. Once you switch, you won't go back.

I like the concept, but don’t think it’s practical to implement. Would want to see investment in training and shooting practice facilities alongside a requirement like this to ensure it doesn’t restrict access too much and that the desired outcome is achieved.

I got a doe this year and didn’t realize how big she was until trying to drag her out of a small ditch, then again when I tried to lift her into my SUV. Took me all of 30 minutes with multiple stops to rest before I finally got her in.
So picked up the meat from the butcher and ended up with over 57 lbs. I checked my records and my buck last year only yielded 43. I know there’s some variability based on ruined meat from shot placement and the skill and patience of the butcher, but I’m curious - what yield have others gotten from a big doe? I unfortunately didn’t get the deer weighed, but the butcher estimated it at 130+ dressed.
I’m curious if I’ll notice a difference in the taste with it being an older deer but will find out soon!
