Tried a new to me spot and was disappointed that the entire wooded area near the creek was 7+ foot tall giant ragweed. There are defined deer trails but they’re quite narrow. The stalks knock down easy but catch on everything. There are some areas of blowdown or water flow or something where the weeds are all broke off but those are even harder to fight through. Gave up eventually. Figured even if I found a tree there wouldn’t be a shot through the thick stuff. I know bucks love high stem count security cover and it seems like it fits the bill, but other than hunting the field edge and just guessing where they’ll come out I have no idea how to hunt the place. Anybody else dealt with the stuff?

I took the drag behind the 4 wheeler a few weeks ago and knocked down all of it I could get to in and around the woods. Went back this weekend and where no deer tracks were previously I have a trail beat down to dirt/mud with more prints than I could count.

If you can’t knock it down, due to being public or whatever else, best bet is to find entry and exit routes on the edges and set up there. Pretty much what you already said, but unless you can stomp down enough to get a shooting lane, that’s about your only option.

Are you sure it isn't poison hemlock?

Are you sure it isn't poison hemlock? Interesting question. The vast majority was giant ragweed. I used an app to identify it, and I’m pretty sure. However, there were some plants in there with white flowers. And perhaps not coincidentally, I’m dealing with a painful, itchy rash in a very unfortunate area. So…maybe? There was poison ivy everywhere so I assumed it was just that. Who knows.

Ragweed produces a greenish to yellow flower in early Fall. Most of those Apps, if similar to Cornell’s do a pretty good job of identification.

If you can find a tree out in it near an active trail, hunt it. As the season progresses and you have frosts and rain, that stuff will lose some of it's height and you should be able to get a shot somewhere.

As the season progresses and you have frosts and rain, that stuff will lose some of it's height and you should be able to get a shot somewhere. Hunting a tree line or a single tree in a CRP field can pay dividends. The deer move pretty freely in CRP. The problem is seeing them. There are times when I hunted them that all I saw was the head of the deer moving through. I killed a real nice six some years back that all I saw was his head, antlers and a couple inches of his back. Tough to aim at that. I BAHed him to a stop. Got the crosshairs on the top of his shoulder and then went down a little from there. I was shooting through weeds, but he was close. I didn't get down on his body as far as I should have and spined him. He was down and I could see his head raise up and he tried to get up. No shots available. I had to get down and walk over to him and give him the killing shot.
