I’d say most leases are between $15-40/acre, but there’s a wide range.

I’m on my lease for the first time this year. New section I haven’t hunted before. Planned on an observation sit looking over the field but couldn’t find a good tree. Ended up in a tree that’s too small, way too crooked, and too exposed. But did find a fresh rub under it and can see about 10 beds from up here. Just hoping to get a sense of where and when they’re entering this field area tonight. If I see one or two I’ll call it a success.

Five hours scout/hunting Mississinewa. No deer, one set of fresh rubs in a spot that’ll be impossible to hunt, 3.6 miles of walking.

Plenty out at Mississinewa today, for sure. Saw 5 cars between 3 parking lots + mine. Didn't see anyone in the woods, though - plenty of room to spread out.

Most of my public land hunting in recent years has been at Brookville, with the occasional Morgan-Monroe hunt. I've scouted Mississinewa but haven't hunted there yet, and have never been to Salamonie.
For those of you who have hunted both M and S - any significant difference in hunting pressure? I would assume it's fairly light during archery and crazy for firearms, but would love more intel if you're willing to share.

Fair question, but I was assuming 7% growth for my calculations. FWIW, 200k invested in 2000 would be $568k in 2020, even with that bad downturn. And from 1988 to 2008 it would have become $650k.

I keep wanting to buy land…and then I do the math again. Let’s say I’ve saved up $200k and can pay cash, so loan interest isn’t a factor. If I want to drive an hour from Indy, that would get me 20-30 acres. Make it an hour and a half and I could probably get 50-75 acres. If I was willing to drive 2 hrs then I could probably find 100 acres, and driving 3 hours I could get 150 acres somewhere.
Let’s say the whole thing was classified forest so I didn’t have any significant tax burden, or some crop land that would pay enough in cash rent or CRP to offset the higher taxes.
I’m still giving up the market returns for the invested $200k, which compounds annually, for land that’s likely to grow in value no faster than inflation. So that’s something like $15k in lost growth in year 1, and it increases from there. Sure, the market could crash..but if it was severe and sustained, then recreational land prices would probably dive as well.
After 20 years, my land is worth maybe $350k if I’m lucky. If i would have left it in the market, it would be more like $700k. That makes leasing seem a lot more affordable, even if it’s just to delay a land purchase for another x years…

I need to clean up some space in my basement. All have been previously viewed and are in great condition, though boxes will show minor shelf wear.

Yah - I skipped those questions because I'm too ignorant to have an opinion!

Shot mine for the first time yesterday. With cheap ammo and a lead sled I had a couple 1 inch groups at 100. So if I miss in the woods, it’s not the gun’s fault. Pretty pleased for the price, other than the heavy trigger. I’m not much of a gear mod guy but I may have to do something there...

Yep, date is right. Unfortunately I pulled my camera just yesterday and I never saw him on other cameras or in numerous hunts at the property after mid-October.

So I've read and heard some of the back and forth regarding the size and nature of the "no man's land" area above the vitals. I've seen the YouTube video referenced on the Hunting Public with the deer's inflated lungs, etc.
Found this today while going through my trail cam pics...

Just pulled cameras today. Never got him again on the camera he'd showed up on before, but found one picture from another cam. What a buck!

I'm liking what I read about the 350 Legend, and I think that's my preferred option right now. Wish this came in a stainless barrel, though...https://ruger.com/products/scoutRifle/specSheets/6841.html.

Thanks for the links!
After learning how badly lead bullets fragment in a deer, I don’t want my family consuming any. If all it costs me to avoid the chance my kids are eating lead in venison tacos is a little inconvenience and a few more dollars spent on ammunition, it’s a no brainer for me. Lead is scary stuff - Flint, MI or anywhere else!
Now that I have done options on ammo I guess it’s back to going in circles trying to decide between the various calibers!

I think I want to get a rifle for next year’s deer firearms season. I’m struggling to decide between all the straight wall cartridge options, but I really want to shoot a lead free bullet. I don’t see any good premade cartridges across the many calibers I’ve checked, and only a few bullet options for reloaders. Can one of you experts suggest anything I might be missing? 357 and 44 mag, 350 legend, and 450 bushmaster all seem like options except for the ammo issue. For my muzzleloader I’ve been using cutting edge bullets, but they don’t have a cartridge option for any of these.
