Heard from someone in the know that blue tongue/ EHD is happening there.
Here are their words...."We currently are having a blue tongue/ EHD out break, so it could be tough"

You would think that with all the advances in modern science, we could at least slow it down.

Just another log on the fire for big oaks. That place used to be the bomb. Now you’re lucky if you see one. We call it big jokes now.

We use to hunt Big Oaks a lot and would see deer every trip. We have given up after not seeing any deer three years in a row. We hunt area 75 two full day on 1st weekend in November and saw zero.

Yeah I hunted 75 once. Supposedly to be THE unit!!! What a laugh could set up in the middle and have a 20 yard shot on either side. Was told 75 is a unit where you either saw a ton or zero….. we saw zero.

I’ll be hunting unit 2 November 19 and 20th That’s a long drive… get in line early! Hopefully EHD hasn’t killed to many at that end!

50,000 acres and deer harvest last year was under 200 deer. Been on decline drastically last 10 years. Very few locals even apply for hunts anymore.

Nice! I hunted there twice didn't see much first time saw one small buck the second. I think a guy could do well if he knew the lay of the land. Both times I went were wayyy before the sat photos and topography overlays that wr have today. Wish I could get back into Crane. Those 2 places are darn good EHD or not.

But there is always a handful of nice deer shot by someone. I talked to the director there few weeks ago and his exact words was “We currently are having a blue tongue/ EHD out break, so it could be tough”…. BTW…. This will be the first year without Covid-19 restrictions so I expect a up swing in Harvest IMO

I just looked at last 3 years harvest last week and it was like 450's-320's-170's for 18-19-20. Pretty routine harvests of 600+ for many years. Just think for a property that size much more could to done manage for deer and turkeys. Only mgt I am aware of is a occasional prescribed burn and hunting. Same could be said of parks, all they do is over hunt them. These are JMO.

They don’t hunt 50k acres by any means….. there is more areas not hunted then the areas that are hunted.
I get what you saying but a lot deer also move in and out of the place regularly….. As long as folks keep going they will always have hunts. IMO
The south end is also hunted by outfitters… pay & play! I believe they do food plots and feeders also.

Yes the south end is leased to outfitter and it has several 100 acres farm ground in addition to outfitters food sources, think that part is around 4000 ish acres. There will always be hunting on the Big Oaks side and I understand a large part is composed of restricted areas, would just like to see property managed better, as it has lots of potenial for a public lands hunting area.

Are these state grounds public, but you have to put in for a draw, apply to hunt? Sounds like private grounds to me!!
