We have a prescribed burn plan on the farm. We burn in the neighborhood of 20 acres a year, rotated on a 3-year schedule.Out of all that grassland we have never found a shed. You would think as much time as they bed in the grass the sheds would be there but they aren't. Wade

I got my hands on a lot of 30-30 reloads at the right price. In with that was one round that I can't ID. The head stamp is a 30 WCF but it must have been fire formed in another chamber.the shoulder is basically gone and the neck is about a quarter inch shorter that the 30-30. Just to look at it,it reminds you of the 32-40 Winchester but it is much too short. I pulled the bullet. It is 170g with 20 g of stick powder.
That's where I'm at with this.I didn't do any serious measurements but I also didn't find anything in my load book that looks like it.
Any ideas? thanks, Wade

I would guess that someone has already killed one of these mountain lions by now and practiced sss. It is time to allow hunting for bobcats, imo it seems they are all over. The state isn't far from agreeing with you. When they started the limited trapping for Otter the other thing on the agenda was a Bobcat season(limited of course. They are just waiting to see the population can survive the pressure and probably, truth be known, public support.I expect it to happen in a couple years. Wow! Nice site. Thanks for the link! As I said,I'm new to reloading so any tip or help you can throw my way will help.I'm doing a lot of reading about loads and pressures etc right now. It would be so much easier if I could get "hands on" knowledge but I'm enjoying the read. Thanks, Wade

I lived in Ohio in the 80's. Across the street was a gas station. The owner loved to gamble and had some high stakes games. One Saturday night he won himself his very own pet lion.He built a 360* cage between the house and garage and everyone in the area came to see it.
I talked to him after he had it for a couple weeks and he was complaining he had to feed it a box of chicken every other day!He tried everything to get rid of it.Couldn't sell it or trade it.After a couple months he up and "said" he had to lose it in a card game to get rid of it.May be true but knowing this guy he also may have just took it for a ride and it "escaped" into the wild.
Stranger things have happened! Wade

Almost all factory .30-30 Win. barrels have a 1-in-12" rate of twist. Your .30-30 can be reloaded to exceed factory loads. I use to own a bolt action Remington M-788 in .30-30 and it liked WW-748 powder using 125 to 150 grain bullets. Got 5-shot groupings of < 1" @ 100 yards using pointed soft point bullets. That sounds like where I'd like to get to! I know I'll have to go thru a lot of different powders and loads and it will be time-consuming but I see no reason why the 30-30 should be put out to pasture. That's just foolish talk to me.Especially since the 357 max has caught on now and the ballistics are so close it's scary! I have a 308 and 35 rem if need be but I'd like to dial in this 30-30 since it's setting on a 20 ga barrel.Never know when you might need that fast backup shot. If I can get sub moa @ 100 yards I'd be tickled with 3" @ 200. Why not! The ballistics are there I'd say. Wade

I agree as far as fawns but taking down a deer isn't as easy as we might think.A few years ago I went into a stand just before daylight. Before I got there I was hearing deer snorting and running through the soybeans.I was excited!I was convinces as soon as day broke I'd see a buck chasing a doe! Daylight came and for close to an hour (total time) I watched three coyote trying to catch a yearly. They didn't stand a chance! That yearly would stand in the beans and watch they trying to find an angle of approach and she'd stomp and snort and when they got 25 yards from her she would run 80 yards or so and it all started all over again.Even the time after daylight where I could see, this happened probably 15 or 20 times. The yotes finally gave up! This convinced me that they only get the very young, the very old or the very weak. Wade

I just ordered a press and one of my first projects will be to tweak the 30-30 barrel on a savage 24v in 30-30/20.My plan as of now is to fire form my brass and neck size only.Until I get a lot more experience behind me I'll be loading 150gr bullets.
I have not shot this gun yet so can't tell what I'm starting with until I do. I'm just wondering how accurate it would be possible to get without doing a lot to the gun itself. When I hear about a 3" moa from a 30-30 I think that can be reduced, hopefully to 1".
Any info will help as I have no experience so far. Thanks, Wade

I talked to one of my brothers Saturday. He works in Big Oaks, aka JPG.They have had a black bear in there for months and their bobcat population has exploded. This years deer taken from there was the lowest on record. Also, everyone I talk to says they are not seeing deer this year. This is also the first year in memory I have not seen or heard a coyote.Personally I believe we have a "large" predator problem in the area but of course that is only speculation. Wade
