I got my hands on a lot of 30-30 reloads at the right price. In with that was one round that I can't ID. The head stamp is a 30 WCF but it must have been fire formed in another chamber.the shoulder is basically gone and the neck is about a quarter inch shorter that the 30-30. Just to look at it,it reminds you of the 32-40 Winchester but it is much too short. I pulled the bullet. It is 170g with 20 g of stick powder.
That's where I'm at with this.I didn't do any serious measurements but I also didn't find anything in my load book that looks like it.
Any ideas? thanks, Wade

Wade On your PB thumbnail pics when you put your mouse over the thumbnail it will show 3 lines on the left side of thumbnail , hover pointer over it and click share. When that drops down just click on the link on the right side, photo links direct, it will say copied. Then just past on HI in the "Insert Image" spot.

Bullseye you got me done! Hot sang! I fussed with that thing for an hour I guess. If hunt'n was this hard I wouldn't do it! Anyway, woody the image was 1.76 so it wouldn't fit on the site and had to be reduced. At least that's the way I understand it.I'm not much with computers.
The pix above is of the odd ball along side another 30WCF/30-30.I don't see it in the books unless it's a wildcat.Don't matter I guess. Just curious as to what and why. Wade

The rim is smaller like a semi rimmed case. Does not look like a 30-30 case Whats the case bottom look like? Someone might have been making the 30 Herrett? 1.605 is the case lenght of the 30 Herrett.

The head stamp is 30WCF. It's exactly the same and so is the throat.I don't know a lot about this kind of stuff but the only reason I can come up with is that it had been fire formed in a different chamber.maybe I don't know what I'm talking about too cause that's happened before!LOL! Wade

So Woody,How did you do that when all I can do is get the link to Photobucket? Anyway, that is reduced from 800x600 to 320x240. That's the only way I could get it to load. Wade

It could very well be a piece of .30-30 Win brass converted to use in an old German target rifle (typically a single-shot) chambered in 8.15 X 46R. See: stevespages.com/jpg/cd815x46r.jpg

That's not in my book but it's certainly the closest thing to it that I've seen! I'll have to make it and put it up somewhere if I can get a positive ID. I'll try to get time to mice it tomorrow! Wade

You may also want to get a copy of the book entitled Cartridges of the World. Lots and lots of info there about all kinds of cartridges. I highly recommend the book, which is updated every few years.

Wade The fact your mystery cartridge has the head stamp .30 W.C.F. sounds like someone attempted to make a .30-30 Wesson. The fact the head stamp .30 W.C.F. and the stick powder sounds like a very old cartridge.

I,ve never even heard of the 30-30 Wesson!Of course I'm totally new to reloading so that's a proper excuse. The book sounds nice but spending all the loose change on reloading equipment now.You know that old thing about being on a fixed income! You can't go out and work a couple hours of overtime to pick up a new toy! Wade I clicked on the link you provided. It had a "share" button. I clicked on that . It had "links". I clicked on that. Then copied the IMG link and pasted it here...
