I just ordered a press and one of my first projects will be to tweak the 30-30 barrel on a savage 24v in 30-30/20.My plan as of now is to fire form my brass and neck size only.Until I get a lot more experience behind me I'll be loading 150gr bullets.
I have not shot this gun yet so can't tell what I'm starting with until I do. I'm just wondering how accurate it would be possible to get without doing a lot to the gun itself. When I hear about a 3" moa from a 30-30 I think that can be reduced, hopefully to 1".
Any info will help as I have no experience so far. Thanks, Wade

A lot of what your asking for depends on what twist the rifle barrel is. Being a single shot, spire point projectiles can be used versus flat nosed or hollow points which must be used in a lever action. And then there is the multiple case, primer, powder, bullet, seating depth combinations that can be worked up. Don't expect the results you want with your first loads. Use Google search for 30-30 loads in your gun and read all the loading manuals you can.

Almost all factory .30-30 Win. barrels have a 1-in-12" rate of twist. Your .30-30 can be reloaded to exceed factory loads. I use to own a bolt action Remington M-788 in .30-30 and it liked WW-748 powder using 125 to 150 grain bullets. Got 5-shot groupings of < 1" @ 100 yards using pointed soft point bullets.

I did a lot of it about 40 years ago for a Marlin 336.

That sounds like where I'd like to get to! I know I'll have to go thru a lot of different powders and loads and it will be time-consuming but I see no reason why the 30-30 should be put out to pasture. That's just foolish talk to me.Especially since the 357 max has caught on now and the ballistics are so close it's scary! I have a 308 and 35 rem if need be but I'd like to dial in this 30-30 since it's setting on a 20 ga barrel.Never know when you might need that fast backup shot. If I can get sub moa @ 100 yards I'd be tickled with 3" @ 200. Why not! The ballistics are there I'd say. Wade

Wade I bagged my first Deer here in Kentucky using my Remington M-788, plus several other Deer. It has never failed me, and I wish I'd kept it. My particular rifle was very accurate using Winchesters' old style silvertip 170 grain factory loads, but was outstanding in the accuracy department, reloading it with 125 to 150 grain bullets made for the .30-30. With these weights, I tried IMR-3031 and 4198, but found that Winchesters' 748 to be the most consistent in the accuracy department. The 125 grain bullet made by Sierra proved to be the most accurate with groups running around .500" @ 100 yards; with the 150 grain bullets a very close second with a 5-shot grouping of < 1" @ 100 yards. Here's a site listing some .30-30 loads: www.reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=51

Wow! Nice site. Thanks for the link! As I said,I'm new to reloading so any tip or help you can throw my way will help.I'm doing a lot of reading about loads and pressures etc right now. It would be so much easier if I could get "hands on" knowledge but I'm enjoying the read. Thanks, Wade

I've loaded my .308 down to .30-30 levels and used Winchester 150 grain "Old" Silvertip bullets with success. I used both IMR-4064 & WW-748 in my Ruger Model 77 Compact Magnum rifle. I found I receive the best results using WW-748 + a magnum primer when using .30-30 type bullets while IMR-4064 gives better results and accuracy when using standard 150 grain bullets made for the .308.
