In response to Northern Indiana public land bow hunting I would LOVE to know where to go to only see 1 other hunter till gun season. Because I hunted Salamonie, Mississinewa, JE Rousch, Winamac, Pidgeon River, Tri-lakes, Willow Slough, and LaSalle. And there’s hunters everywhere. I spent about a week at each place always on the move hunting new spots every night. I had a blast of a season but just saying. Northern Indiana has a ton of hunters

Tracking? What’s that? 😂 the last dozen I’ve shot with my Matthews either dropped where they stood or ran 20 yards and bled out, but then again I use a gold tip hunter xt 250 with 200 grain broadhead so that’s pretty much dropping the hammer on a deer, lights out. A blind man could find my blood trail. But I will say I LOVE coast headlamps. The HL7 lasts forever and the HL4 is nice with a red light option.

Yep. I’ve had guys walk right in under me on the phone, had guys climb a tree right next to mine and wave at me and try to have a conversation, I’ve had guys shoot at a deer I just shot, I’ve found guys in my stand, and had stands and trail cams stolen, I’ve met the guy with his family tradition for the past 50 years stand like he owned that tree, I’ve seen guys leave minerals sites and corn piles on public, all sorts of very dumb stuff. This video brought back some angry memories. Thanks a lot!!! 😆

My 2 cents. Aged venison tastes terrible. Don’t age your venison. Kill your deer. Wait 20 minutes, collect it and gut it right away. load it up in your truck. Drive straight home. Hoist it up as soon as you get home, skin it, quarter it. Wash the meat, get it in the deep freezer ASAP. Wait. 30 min. Take one leg out, remove the meat from the bone, steaks and roasts get washed and into freezer bags. Simple. No excuses. Get that animal processed. Takes me roughly 4 hours with my wife’s help. Delicious, fat free, washed meat, no time for blood in the carcass to spoil the delicious venison. Enjoy

Hi, have you guys figured out what part of Indiana you’d be hunting? What’s the closest city to your house? Are you willing to drive far or want to hunt close to home?

If leasing wasn’t too expensive I’d do it. Like if I could even find something small 5 acres and the price wasn’t more than like $300 I’d do it for sure

Where are you getting your switch grass seed? I thought a few times about planting some of this. I ordered mine from my local Ag Plus. They quoted me $8/lb

Hunters!!! This is switchgrass. Can you see a deer in this picture? Didn’t think so! I plan to use it along trails and around food plots to make the deer feel more secure AND give me screening cover to get to my stand! Who else is preparing for this years hunting season? What are you doing to your property?

I hear you. And what few pieces of cover there are, usually have a hunter or two in them. All the management and habitat work in the world isn't going to make an area like that a deer mecca. Best cure I've found is to take road trips to other hunting destinations. A big thing for me last year was STAYING OFF my parcel so the deer wouldn't be spooked off. know how many times I hunted that property? 2 times. Once opening day of bow and then again the day before thanksgiving. Results? I took a nice maybe 4 year old 10 point and a 2 year old doe. I spent the rest of my time doing hang and hunts always in different spots on public land

sad part is, the highland store will prob do great. i have family in that area and in general people are so brainwashed up there because of Chicago they all think guns are evil and nobody needa them and are ok with a million background checks. they were all shocked at Christmas time when i showed them an AR pistol. the look on their faces. like I was some evil terrible person

I live in flat farm country. Lots of Amish. mostly corn fields, hardly any woods. not much opportunity for deer to grow old. The deer move from field to field at night or use drainage ditches and creeks to move between properties. they bed in young brush areas that are grassy and thick. most deer groups i see are small 2-4 at most. I'd bet the average lead doe i see would be 2 years old tops. fawning seems to be ok, usually 2 fawns per doe. coyotes are a problem, most years i notice does with 2 fawns have 1 left come hunting season. i would consider farm land in northern indiana to be very boring hunting. not as predictable as you'd think as the deer travel far. there's no terrain features to hold the deer to an area. maybe that's why the deer we do see are the young and dumb. Amish do their hunting differently too. if it has a furry white tail it's fair game. by the way if you'd rather read hunting stories than check facebook raise your hand. me too. in northern indiana i look for water to tell me where the deer are. is there a creek, a swamp, a pond in a secluded area. is there a wetland not suitable for growing crops? I notice where there is water, it is usually a low point in elevation and gives deer a place to hide. also where there's water there are willows and tall grasses. find a good stream and scout the entire thing till you find the heavily used crossing point. that's where you want to hunt. you'll mostly find does, but come November big boy will come through looking for does. so don't shoot your does if you want to see a buck. keep momma happy. i guess all the corn and beans keeps deer around. deer management for me is watching my "herd" grow from 2 to 4 every year then back to 2 🐱 gotta watch out for mountain lions and panthers i keep hearing about. we see them on trail cams. my dad swears it's the problem. look like tiny house cats to me.

i spent a lot of time thinking and observing this very issue this year. observations:
1. trail cams draw a LOT of negative attention so hide them super high (8' plus) and brush them in.
a. videos draw less negative reponse because they only "click" once to turn on, camera clicking is super loud to deer. use videos for less negative reaction from deer.
b. during the season only check sim cards the morning you hunt. i was checking mine too often and i noticed every time after i checked sims, no pics of deer on my cams for the next 2 weeks.
i use moultrie cams fwiw.

Don’t sit in my stand, don’t setup nearby me, if you get into the woods late don’t walk deep into the woods if you’ve not scouted it before you make a lot of hunters mad when you walk right past them. Setup your stand before the season starts. Nobody wants to hear your dragging in a stand opening day. Know the area you hunt, talk to the people you see in the parking lot, ask where they hunt and hunt somewhere else. If you see a stand with no lock on it don’t steal it, if you see a trail cam that doesn’t belong to you leave it alone. Don’t shoot at moving objects in the dark, could be some new guy looking for a tree to sit in. I think most important is: season starts and you need a hunting spot? Wait till 12 noon to go in and setup, have your stand up by at least 6pm, deer start moving around 630 or 7 so if ours dragging in a stand past guys in trees during shooting hours you’ll be making some enemies. Have fun, use common sense, be courteous to the guys who hunt where you’re at and they will be respectful to you as well. I personally like to know who’s hunting around me, we talk, the respect is mutual we don’t hunt near each other and leave each other’s stands alone and look out for new guys who may not be as respectful. God bless

Having found this forum I’ve lost all interest in other Indiana forums. The only one I’m still curious about is Hoosier hunting but until they get setup on Tapatalk this is the only forum for me. Oh and I agree I do use Michigan sportsman when I’m up there. Not bad, I suppose

So having 20,000 current gun laws isn’t enough to stop criminals? Hmm. I wonder why criminals don’t obey all those laws? Oh wait because they’re criminals
