My wife and I spent the first week of August in Spanish On. fishing for smallies. Well I did the fishing, she tagged along and read and relaxed. The fishing was hard because of the weather. It was one front after another. I did manage to get a couple of nice fish everyday and a lot of smaller fish. I caught a few 4lbers and a fair amount of 3's. My biggest was 4.15 and I lost a really big fish at the boat. I know "the big one that got away!" lol. Most were caught on either jigs or dropshot with soft plastics. I caught the biggest on a 4" albino shad sluggo cast to fish busting minnows on the surface. I was shocked to catch a big smallie on a jerk bait in 40' of water! I also caught a few big pike and 2 walleye. I met three nice guys from Indiana who were there that did pretty good fishing for pike. I will try and post some pics but not sure how.

I'm staying in the Selfridge area so I'm hoping the fishing gets better there. If not I will make the run down to the mile roads, weather permiting.I'm not really interested in fishing for LM either.I make the 5hr drive for the smallies! I will hopefully have a good report to post in a couple days. Thanks for the info.

Good to hear you guys had fun and caught some fish! I'm heading up there in the morning.I was getting nervous about the weather, but this is the only time I can make it up there.I have a feeling things will still be slow but your report at least gives me hope that fish are there. Were you guys fishing Sang area or the mile roads?

I'm not into bow fishing but if you are and you live near Prairie creek res in Muncie, you should check it out. I fished there today and the carp were everywhere! i must have seen over 100 around the dam and boat docks. It looked like easy shooting to me.

I saw a show with KVD fishing LSC and he was calling it "the best smallie lake in the world today". Compared it to Falcon for lg mouths. With the ammount of boat traffic I saw last year,I think the secret is out!

This morning at around 10, I had 2 does go by on the next ridge over from where I was hunting.10 min. later a nice 8 point followed their trail with his nose to the ground like a hound dog. Then as I was walking out I heard something and thought I had spooked a deer.I stopped and a little 6 point with his nose to the ground walked up to within 15ft. of me.

I got him yesterday morning on public land.I had a doe come by being chased by a spike. After they passed another spike came in and joined the chase.5 min. later yet another spike came in and took up the trail.I was thinking this could be a good morning when I caught sight of antlers in the thick tangle to my right. He came out nose to the ground.I bleated to stop him at 17 yrds and took the shot.He made it about 60 yrds and crashed in a deadfall. He is a 5x4 with a split brow and is my first crossbow kill. Your right swilk, but it could have hurt alot worse if it had been some big$$ stand. The wierd thing is I was talking hunting with my buddy from Florida sat. night.I told him I was going to hunt this stand in the morning and that I'm worried it wouldn't be there. He said"don't worry, hunters are good guys.No one is gonna touch it." I'm gonna call him and thank him for jinxing me! lol normally this stand is a 45 min. walk in but they were logging in that area so I had to move it.I shouldve known better than to put it up closer, but it is a good area.A lesson learned.

You should feel lucky your stand is still there.I got to one of my stands yeterday morning and it was gone.I hunt public land and know I'm taking a chance everytime I put a stand up so I use cheap stands and steps for that reason. They must have worked hard to get it.I had 6 cable locks on it.The part that gets me the most is the time and effort it took to lug all that stuff in the woods.Between the stand and 24' of ladder steps it's not light and it was an all up hill climb to the stand location.I guess I will start using my climber but every year it gets harder to lug up steep hills with my bad back.I hope the scum that took it enjoys it, but I believe in karma.
