Got to my stand this morning and found a white handkerchief on a tree.. Then noticed my seat was down and the gun rail up on my stand. I always leave the seat up, and gun rail down. Then a cigarette butt in my seat.. I don't smoke.. Who ever it was diet care to cover up there tracks, its like they wanted me to know that they were there.. Make me very angry. Especially when there is a 170 to 180 class buck that im trying to get!

Could have been much worse. No stand and a large pair of gonads and a gut pile nearby.

The more I think about it, the handkerchief was warm and dry.. It should of been cold and damp this morning. So I think they were there this morning. They took off when i got there. Thats why I carry my gun on me when I bow hunt

I have had this happen many times where I hunt. Trash, buckets, spit cans, cigarette butts all left to stink up my stands. I have had to ask people to vacate my stands at times. My brother in law is the landowner and will not prosecute them. He is afraid they will sabotage his farm equipment when he leaves it in the field. So far no violent confrontations but I have had stands vandalized. I remember the Wisconsin incident where some hunters told a man to vacate their stand and he shot them and family members that came to help them. They were unarmed. Makes you stop and think.

I have several Ladder Stands set up.
Every time I am done hunting I take the seat out of my treestand, and I take it home with me.
This way hunters are less likely to hunt of my treestand or steal my treestand.

Happened to me once. Found 3 empty 20 gauge slug hulls under the stand. I said something to the property owner and he said that his stepson decided that he wanted to hunt that year (and wounded an antlerless with one of those 3 shots and they couldn't find it). I told him to tell his stepson to use the stands (had two of them up in his woods) for that year and that I would leave his woods alone. I retrieved my stands after season was over and did not go back. Just heard last year that the woods is unhunted again. The stepson apparently lost interest.

We have 5 stands set up on one property we hunt. I tell the landowner, his son and whoever else is in his family they are more than welcome to use any stand out there. It ain't like there isn't enough room, enough deer or enough stands to go around. I ain't going to get into a peeing match with the landowner or his family over the stands he graciously allowed me to put up. He could have just as easily said naw I don't really want any ladder stands out there but your more than welcome to use a climber. Fortunately for me, that's one relationship that started out just him trusting me enough after one conversation to respect his property and allow me to hunt and it's turned into a real friendship over the last 20 or so years.

You should feel lucky your stand is still there.I got to one of my stands yeterday morning and it was gone.I hunt public land and know I'm taking a chance everytime I put a stand up so I use cheap stands and steps for that reason. They must have worked hard to get it.I had 6 cable locks on it.The part that gets me the most is the time and effort it took to lug all that stuff in the woods.Between the stand and 24' of ladder steps it's not light and it was an all up hill climb to the stand location.I guess I will start using my climber but every year it gets harder to lug up steep hills with my bad back.I hope the scum that took it enjoys it, but I believe in karma.

No such thing as a cheap stand when you end up losing it ..... even the cheapest stand and a set of sticks/straps is going to push $100.
Bad deal all around ....

I own the property I hunt, but it's impossible to monitor it all the time. If someone had repeatably been told to stop trespassing, they'd definitely be prosecuted. I always use chains and locks on every stand. If I leave the stands up during the off season, I take half the ladder down, that way you cant get into the stand. As my last chance effort, I always leave a laminated note on my stands that says "Smile You're on Trail Camera". At least may make someone think twice before walking off with it.

Your right swilk, but it could have hurt alot worse if it had been some big$$ stand. The wierd thing is I was talking hunting with my buddy from Florida sat. night.I told him I was going to hunt this stand in the morning and that I'm worried it wouldn't be there. He said"don't worry, hunters are good guys.No one is gonna touch it." I'm gonna call him and thank him for jinxing me! lol normally this stand is a 45 min. walk in but they were logging in that area so I had to move it.I shouldve known better than to put it up closer, but it is a good area.A lesson learned.

My landowners have the same equipment concerns, that is why I have the ability to sign trespass charging paperwork. My name, not theirs, is on all the legal forms and retaliation is aimed at me and the badge has all but ended all of that.

Have had this issue for many years on my uncle's land. He never allowed hunters on his property and always told those he found there that if he saw them again he would have them arrested. He finally had enough crop damage he came to me and asked me to go get does and reduce the population for him. I was happy to oblige. I have had guys tell me they had permission to be there...I have had his deer loving neighbors call the police on me and try to tell me it is illegal to hunt within 400 yards of an occupied residence. BUt it's okay for them to trespass on his farm to go on nature walks...
We have had stands disappear and even came out to find a guy in a homemade stand that he had erected in a huge old oak tree by nailing it up to the tree with nice long pole barn spikes driven into the tree!!!
You just never know what people will do...or how stupidly they will do it

I feel your pain. i hunt public land too and last year had a ladder stick I just bought and a nice aluminum loc-on stand that i really liked stolen. I had a thick chain around the ladder and stand so they had to take bolt cutters to get it. I also had lugged this stuff for at least 3/4 a mile and some scumbag stole it. i too belive in karma. What is wrong with people.

It really gets frustrating when you are trying to do everything right and "by the book" but others are doing whatever they want. I lost a big buck last week and, after gaining permission from the land owner, I as I was checking my neighbors farm I found large piles of corn and "c"mere deer" in front of two of their stands. Keep your head up.
