My boy and I hunted all day Sat., and most of the day today. We each took a buck and a doe yesterday, and he got another doe this A.M. We are gonna hunt Monday, then he has to go back to work. Together we must have seen close to 20 different bucks, the last 2 days. I saw at least 25 deer today, until about 3 pm., then everything seemed to just shut down.

Great timing on a thread. I was coming on to post the same thing. Been a life member since the mid 70s. I've been posting elsewhere about 50+MILLION MEMBERS! If 1/2 the gunowners in the US, that are currently stocking up on ammo/guns/components, would join for a minimum of 4 yrs., we could swell the membership. Can you imagine on inagural day that the NRA announces 50+ million new members, the message it would send to congress and the new administration?
I know the NRA has internal issues/politics, but we have an opportunity here to do something for gunowners, that the republican party couldn't pull off.
Kinda like me and my brother can beat the he** out of each other, but if an outsider steps in he's gonna get a whoopin from both of us!
Life members posted here. I'm just as guilty, but we all need to get out and recruit 3-5 new members ourselves. I wish there was a way to have a sign up member sheet in every gun store in the US right now.

Didn't know whether to post this here, or in modern firearms, but it does pertain to deer hunting. My son and I are both going to use new .44 mags for this years deer season. His is a handi rifle, and mine a Marlin 1894. After shooting a couple different brands, we have settled on the hornady LE ammo. However, we tried a box of the Win. USA white box stuff, and out of about 30 shots, we wound up with 10 split cases We had split cases in both rifles out of this box of ammo. Any of you boys have the same problem? Anybody know how to get ahold of their QC dept.? All my years of shooting all kinds of factory ammo, the majority of which is winchester, I have NEVER had this happen before! Mad Dog

Just bought a new 1894 marlin, .44 mag. Have shot a couple brands of ammo thru it, including LE. Has anybody else tried it , chrono'd it, or shot any game with it? It is extremely accurate in my new gun, and was wanting imput from anybody that has used it.

Due to feet issues, that I have had the last 2 yrs., I shot 3 animals spot and stalk, and 4 at waterholes. Nothing was shot from the back of the truck. I can walk a coupla miles, but just couldn't do an all day marathon. My son, however, is in excellent shape, and walked over 100 miles in 10 days to take his 7 animals. BTW he used a NEF handirifle, .30-06, and got 7 1 shot kills.

HH, I was told over there, that gemsbok and kudu rugs need to be hung up. The hair is hollow, similar to pronghorn. If you want to make it a "walk on rug", zebra, and blue wildebeast, are the best.

Because I COULD! ;D Besides, they make awesome rugs, and soak up lead like a sponge.

We booked a 10 day, 6 animal pkg., which included kudu,gemsbok,blue wildebeast,impala,warthog, and blesbok. $4675 plus VAT tax[$399] = $5074
Airline ticket $2083.00
extra animals [zebra] $950
tips and gifts $600
Total before any taxidermy $8707
Taxidermy and shipping home can get very expensive, depending on what you have done. I'm having 5 skull/plaque euro mts. done, and 4 flat skin rugs done. Cost $1860. We won't know until things get completed what shipping/customs will cost, but am budgeting $2000 for that. Could be high or low.
Also, something that wasn't budgeted for, was wounded animals. I hit a gemsbok too high in the shoulder[rushed the shot], and lost it. Over there, if you draw blood, you pay for it. That little brain fart cost me $925, to shoot another one.
Probably, if I round it off, I'll have just shy of $12,000 in everything, but that is paid out over 3 yrs. You can do it cheaper, by booking a shorter hunt/fewer animals/ little or no taxidermy. But I figured its my once in a lifetime trip, anf went for the gusto! ;D

Yep, first time in 20 yrs. I pulled a demo ticket in the primary. My wife worked on the election board, and our Co. normally goes about 80% republican in the primary. This year it was about 82% Democrat!

I'm with hh on this one. I think there will be a lot of incumbent "toast", come Nov. Sure am sick of voting for the least of all evils. Been pretty much a staunch Republican all my life, though I have never voted a straight ticket. Don't like the demos, nor the reps. this year. Not been impressed since the Iraq war started[shades of Vietnam come to mind]. Special interest groups are KILLING this country no matter who's in charge. It IS time for a change.....

old3arrows, I know what you mean. My son and I along with my best friend and his son are going on our first plains game safari, this July. The hunt is reasonable, in price. It's the airline fare and shipping/taxidermy that CAN make Africa expensive. I intend to take a bunch of quality photos, and have them blown up to 8x10 for the wall, as the bulk of my trophies. I may bring home 1-2 hides and 1 euro mt., but intend to use the money I save on not doing a lot of taxidermy, as a nice deposit on another hunt.

Back in the 70s and 80s, I made several trips to TN. to hunt boar, and a couple of exotics. Virtually all of the operations are high fence hunting preserves, unless you hunt the smokies in season with an outfitter with dogs. The 2 I hunted at were:
1. Clarkrange hunting lodge. Extremely rugged terrain, great hog hunt with dogs.
2. Caryonah hunting lodge. Big place, easier terrain than Clarkrange.
A couple of places I have heard good things about, but never hunted are:
1. Wilderness hunting lodge 2. Brimstone outfitters 3. TN extreme boar hunting[the place listed above-I think]
A place to definately stay away from: 1. Cumberland Mtn. Hunting Lodge
The hog hunts are always fun, and usually challenging. My opinion on the exotic hunts? If you want to hunt exotics, go to Texas. JMO.

steiny, no meat was ruined. All three shots were in the heart/lung area. Meat was very usable.
JA recoil is very managable. It doesn't kick as hard as my 12 ga. slug gun. That being said, if you elect to use +p loads from Garrett or Buffalo Bore, they will get your attention, especially from the bench.

First post, but I gotta agree with old iron sights. I took my .45-70 guide gun to Idaho, for a bear hunt in Sept., with my son. I used the new Leverevolution ammo. Rounded a bend on a canyon road, and there was a bear at 40 ft. I hit her 3 times in 5 seconds. All rounds were complete pass throughs, with fist sized exit wounds. Found heart/lung tissue blown 8 ft. from carcass. 3 shots?- My feet hurt and I didn't want to chase her up the side of the canyon wall.
I have taken 5 wild hogs, a javelina, and a black bear with the .45-70 guide gun. Shots were from 40 ft. to 180 yds. Have never recovered a bullet-all pass throughs. Now with the LE ammo, this makes the gun a legitimate 250 yd. rifle. It will settle the hash with any critter I can aford to hunt. Might even take it to south africa in 2 yrs. on a plains game hunt.

No pictures, but the Monticello area, on the tippecanoe is getting hammered again. A lot of the homes that got hit on Jan. 8, are going under again. They evacuated homes below Oakdale Dam yesterday. What a mess!
