Guess I already did it. Went with my son, best friend and his son, to RSA for a plains game hunt, in July 2008. If I can get my butt back to work, my 2nd dream hunt is to go back to Africa, with my son and hunt Cape Buffalo. Found out that you don't want to dream of hunting Africa once, cause you'll wanna keep going back.....

Just heard this on the news. Supposed to be a news conference later on today. Sounds like he's stepping down immediately.

That really gripes my butt. Can't really figure out why yhey would want to do this. If every CCW permitee would stop buying those 2 papers, there is no way in h**l they could make it up in new readership.

same here in white co. Did see 2 deer at noon, but they were spooked off some state pheasant ground. The moon is full, the deer had been shot at for 2 wks., and the second rut hasn't kicked in, yet. If the weather forecast is right, tues/wed. should be good, with snow/cold front coming thru. Gotta admit though, this has been the strangest deer hunting year I have had in at least 2 decades.

Well I started a thread several days ago about 2009 being the toughest season I'd had, in 2 decades. It stayed that way until Sat. Up until then, I had 1 doe, and my son had zip! They finally got to picking the corn, and when my son and I went out, Sat. They were down to about 30 acres. I got another doe, at daylight, and my son, thru the course of the day took 1 buck and 2 does, with his 44 mag handi rifle! A threepeat on the next to the last day of gun season. Unbelieveable! ;D. I didn't get a buck, but will be out there come Sat. Here are a couple of pics. Dan's 8 pt buck. my doe, taken at daylight. Last year we took 2 bucks and 4 does, off the farm, in the first 3 days. This year, we took a buck and 4 does by the end of the season. What a difference a year makes. I'll be after them next weekend, with my muzzleloader. maddog

renegade, I have no intention of giving up. The boy and I will hunt Sat/Sun. I also got a ML to use this year[haven't had one for 3-4 yrs.]. Hopefully they can get the corn finished up before Sun., but I ain't holdin my breath.

well, they finally started picking the corn, 2 days ago. They got about 1/2 the farm done, as of last nite. Saw 1 doe that got bumped out of a headland they were finishing, as I was heading for the truck. Problem is, its raining this am, and I wonder if they will get it done by Fri. or Sat. Sure been a frustrating season.

Ah, gotta love the inline/traditional debates. Kinda reminds me of the trad./modern bow equip. debates. Back in the late 70's early 80's, most of the guys I hunted with all had ML, me too. They were TC renegades, hawkens, and CVA mtn. rifles. Most of us hunted with real black, and PRB, although a few used pyrodex. We did it, because back then, if you didn't fill your gun tag in the early season, you could use it for the 2nd season[ML]. We formed a hunting club, had an old farm house, and between all of us, had access to over 10,000 acres to hunt in our county. Ah the good ole days.... Personally, I think the seasons are ok just as they stand. Hunt with what you want. I've killed deer with trad ML, in lines, shotgun/slugs, compounds, and recurves with wood arrows, and now PRCs in a marlin 1894. It don't matter what ya hunt with, as long as ya hunt. Be careful about what you want to use now, because as you age, and priorities change, you may want to use something else. Lord knows that there are people out there that don't want you to hunt with ANYTHING! Just sayin.....

it will be interesting to see the DNR data on total kill, for this year. Something tells me, that in my area, we are gonna have deer crawling out of the woodwork, next year. Normally, there are 12-15 deer taken off the property I hunt, every year, for a number of yrs. This yr. to the best of my knowledge, there have been 4 taken.

despite the standing corn, I've seen several bucks. Most have been dinks, except one[long story on why I didn't get him]. What has really surprised me, is I've seen only 2 does, since opening day, and harvested one[120 lb. field dressed].

you'll learn after many years of deer hunting[for me 30+], not to let such things bother you. Some want to make a contest out of it, but essentially it comes down to you and the deer, and where you hunt. Plus it is a lot of "luck", but ya have ta make yer own luck....

well, having deer hunted for about 3 decades, I think the initial rut is pretty much over, irregardless of the weather. Normally it is peeking/subsiding by the first 2-3 days of the gun season. Might be a few straggler does out there, but by Dec. 5, hopefully things will pick back up.

Well, we are over halfway through the 2009 gun season. The farm I hunt still hasn't had 1 stalk of corn cut[650-700 acres]. Last year, my son and I had 2 bucks and 4 does on the ground in 3 days. This year, I took 1 good doe on the 2nd day, and my son has taken zip. Talked to a lot of guys over this last weekend. Seems like everybody is down on sightings/kills this year. I know the numbers of deer aren't down, so they must be hangin in the standing corn, and going nocturnal. We probably have 35%+ of the corn still standing, in the county. Gonna give it the ole college try between now and next Sun. nite. I'm thinkin the ML season is going to be the hot ticket, when the secondary rut kicks in, and the corn is cut[hopefully] maddog

My son and I have made some sightings. More than I thought we would. Problem is the farm we hunt [650 acres] hasn't had the first stalk of corn harvested, and the whole farm is corn! We've had enough rain, that I don't know if they will even start, by Thanksgiving. ML season may be the hot ticket item.

kdog, I'd honestly think your big problem is the standing corn. I wouldn't advise going out and stomping up that 4 acre patch. While you are bowhunting, try placing a stand where you can watch that patch. You may not get a shot at the big boy, with your bow, but you'd have a decent pattern on him for gun season, AND they might get the danged corn picked. JMHO

I'm with danf. You CAN do free range hunts in the Smokies, in east Tenn., but you might go 10 times and not even see a hog. Not every high fenced preserve is a bad hunt. I've hunted Clarkrange a number of times, years ago, and could asure you it wasn't "easy". If you insist on free range, the only 2 choices, in my book are Florida or Texas. In 2006, my buddy and I went to south Texas to hunt. We hunted a 15,000+ acre ranch, and took 6 hogs and 2 javelina, in 4 days. It was a long haul, but a great hunt. www.lazyrhunts.com/maddog

Well, the boy and I wanted to do another trip, but unfortunately I got laid off work, at the end of July. Been job hunting for 3 mos. Have an interview tommorrow, and have my fingers crossed. If all goes well, I'd like to go back in 2 yrs. Next time cape buffalo is on the menu.

With proper hits, performance should be fine. Bought a 44 mag, last year, after 17 yrs. with my old slug gun. Between my boy and I, we took 6 deer with 44 mags. We used the Hornady leverevolution, and terminal performance was awesome!
