Back when I used to bowhunt, I used to move stands, all the time. Sometimes I would put only 1 stand up before deer season, then do midday scouting, and throw one up. When I did that, I'd get in that stand the same evening it went up. Went 4-5 yrs. in a row, where I'd have a buck or doe down the same day the stand went up.

Well, I have been a seed salesman for 34 yrs. Grew up on a farm, and DAD was a farmer. The problem we have, is that they can only pick so much, then they have to shut down and DRY it! They local elevators can only handle so much WET corn, then they have to shut down. Unless this weather really straightens up for the next month, I think my prognosis is going to be right. At lest in the northern third of Indiana. Corn for the most part is testing 27-32%, right now, and a good percentage of the crop won't stand a hard freeze. Oh well, I'm already developing a plan...... For those of you in the know, last year we were 400+ heat units ahead of normal.....this year we are over 400 units behind normal! So we shall see what happens....later. maddog

Well, as of today, only about 25% of the beans have been harvested, and maybe 2-3% of the corn. Talked to a couple farmer buddies, yesterday, and they said pick for 6 hrs./dry for 12 hrs. These are guys that have 3500-4000 acres of corn. Hope you boys are right, but ain't holdin my breath.

Been talking to farmers in my area. I think gun season, this year is going to be a real challenge. For the last decade, or so, 85-100% of the crops have been out of the field[here], by opening day of gun season. The way it is going, 50-60% of the corn will still be standing, and in some instances, some farms will not have anything harvested, due to the rain and the moisture levels in the corn. In other words a looonngg slow harvest. The chances are where I hunt, nothing will be out, except soybeans.
This is going to call for some different hunting strategies, than in the past. After the 1st 2 days of gun season, the deer are going to be in the standing corn. Unless the farmers are actually harvesting the place I hunt, I look for sightings to be way down, and am looking for the total harvest for the state to be way down. What is your take on the situation? I ralize that some of you hunt big timbered areas, in the southern part of the state, but what do you guys think that hunt the high ag areas, where you hunt fence rows and small woodlots?

If you read the law carefully, as long as you have a permit, you can open carry in Indiana, now.

Already went on it. Africa, for 10 days on a plains game hunt. If somebody picked up the tab, it would be back to Africa for capebuff, leopard, and more plains game.

Yes, I would have really loved it 1 yr. ago. Because I own/handload for a Marlin Guide Gun. Having said that, I bought a Marlin 1894, .44 mag, and used it last year. Straight walled cartridges, like the .45-70, .444, and .450 would be ok in my book. I've used the .45-70, in Tenn., Texas, Idaho, and South Africa. I'd love to legally take a whitetail with it, here in Indiana.

If its not there, already, maybe we need something like that on the books, here in Indiana.

Some of you remember the post this summer of my son and I going to Africa for a plains game hunt. Well, my son decided to book a cat hunt in jan. to coincide with working a bowl game in AZ. over New Years. He started the hunt last Sat. He called me Mon. nite and said he had gotten his cat! The guide said it was the biggest cat he had taken in 5 yrs., and may make the record book. His estimated weight was 155 lbs. My son wound up shooting him with a .357 ruger. The funny part is he has never hunted with a handgun before ;D I asked him if he practiced with it before the hunt, and he said no, no time. His first shot bang flopped the cat right there! ;D Here are some pics, hope you enjoy them. He hunted with Randy Epperson, rimrock-outfitters, in AZ. Mad Dog

Hog hunts are a HOOT! ;D I've hunted a couple different places in Tenn., yrs. back. I have also hunted Texas a couple a times. My last trip to Texas was in 2006. My buddy and I went to a 15,000 acre ranch about 120 miles SW of San Antonio, between Uvalde and Eagle pass. The hunt was all the hogs you wanted to shoot, 1 javelina, bobcats, and coyotes. We killed 6 hogs, and 2 javelinas in 3 days. I hope to get back there one of these days. Here are some pics. Doc and me with 3 hogs taken 1 evening. Doc with his javelina A sow I killed with my .45-70 A javelina in front of the blind. My javelina taken 1st morning. south Texas brush country. Mad Dog

OI, why not post this in the "ask a conservation officer" section, and see what they have to say?

Used to have a personal protection permit, but let it expire. Haven't owned a handgun in several yrs. My question, if I just want to get a handgun for hunting/plinking/home protection, do you now have to get a CCW or do they stillissue hunting/target permits? I have no interest for carrying concealed, but would like to be able to carry one while hunting. Do they still issue H&T permits, or is it restrictive enough that you might as well get the CC permit? Not really up on the handgun stuff, so any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

My boy and I took 2 bucks and 4 does, off the property we hunt, with our new .44 mags, the 1st 3 days of season. We both were using the new leverevolution ammo, from hornady.

Mark T, feel free to ask away. I live up around Reynolds. The 1894, or the handi rifle would be a good choice. I hunted with a slug gun for 17 yrs. I have a 1895 .45-70, that I've killed hogs, a bear, and last summer used in africa for plains game. I decided when I got home from africa, I wanted to use a levergun for deer season. Since the .45-70 was illegal[by .3" case length], the next best thing was the 1894 .44 mag. After this year, no regrets. Matter of fact, I sold my slug gun. Any questions, ask away.

drs, since I have a buck and 2 does, don't know if I'm gonna try to fill my last doe tag for White Co. We donated a coupla of the deer to some needy friends. There is still a ton of deer where I hunt, but if I shoot another, it will get donated to somebody to, cause my freezer is full.

dave, I used a slug gun for the last 17 yrs. Just sold it to a buddy. Recoil is nothing compared to a slug gun. The gun seems to shoot flatter. I found myself on 1 doe at 125-150, I was shooting over her, because I was so used to the old slug gun. More practice before next season. They are lightweight and fun to shoot. I have a Marlin 1895 in .45-70, that I couldn't use[illegal], but have used it on bear, hogs, and african plains game. Thats why I decided to use a rifle for deer season. No regrets.

After they passed the PCR season, last yr. My son and I both bought new .44 mags for this yr. I got a Marlin 1894, and he got a handi rifle. We both shot, and liked the new hornady LE ammo. Here's some pics of opening weekend. Son's 1st doe of the year. 130# field dressed. My "brain fart" buck. Long story, but he wasn't as big as I thought. My sons buck, and my 1st doe, shot at the same time. My second doe for the season. We had a heckava 3 day hunt. Took 6 deer. The .44 mags/LE ammo performed great. Mad Dog

Any of you boys use this ammo[.44/.357] in your PCR for deer this year? The boy and I each got .44 mags for deer season. We took 6 deer with this ammo, and the performance was very impressive.
