After they passed the PCR season, last yr. My son and I both bought new .44 mags for this yr. I got a Marlin 1894, and he got a handi rifle. We both shot, and liked the new hornady LE ammo. Here's some pics of opening weekend. Son's 1st doe of the year. 130# field dressed. My "brain fart" buck. Long story, but he wasn't as big as I thought. My sons buck, and my 1st doe, shot at the same time. My second doe for the season. We had a heckava 3 day hunt. Took 6 deer. The .44 mags/LE ammo performed great. Mad Dog

Nice deer. How do the 44's compare to shooting a slug gun? Range, weight, kick. Guns look nice.

dave, I used a slug gun for the last 17 yrs. Just sold it to a buddy. Recoil is nothing compared to a slug gun. The gun seems to shoot flatter. I found myself on 1 doe at 125-150, I was shooting over her, because I was so used to the old slug gun. More practice before next season. They are lightweight and fun to shoot. I have a Marlin 1895 in .45-70, that I couldn't use[illegal], but have used it on bear, hogs, and african plains game. Thats why I decided to use a rifle for deer season. No regrets.

Mad Dog Thanks, Mad Dog. I've been trying to convince the State of Indiana since 1987 to make PCR's legal equipment for Deer Hunting. With the help & support of you guys & Gals + the internet hunting forums this dream came true. Some individuals were against it but many more were infavor of PCR's in Indiana's Deer Hunting Season, and I got really beaten up by some who opposed the use of PCR's in Indiana. However, now since I moved to KY this is a non-issue here in Ky, as we can use any High Powered rifles and PCR's if we want. Again, Congrats on your nice Buck and hope you get your Doe Too!

drs, since I have a buck and 2 does, don't know if I'm gonna try to fill my last doe tag for White Co. We donated a coupla of the deer to some needy friends. There is still a ton of deer where I hunt, but if I shoot another, it will get donated to somebody to, cause my freezer is full.

LOL
I started calling the buck that Dad shot opening weekend a "genetic brain fart". Had a messed up rack on that one.
Nice deer! I really need to get a PCR chambering to use myself!

Mark T, feel free to ask away. I live up around Reynolds. The 1894, or the handi rifle would be a good choice. I hunted with a slug gun for 17 yrs. I have a 1895 .45-70, that I've killed hogs, a bear, and last summer used in africa for plains game. I decided when I got home from africa, I wanted to use a levergun for deer season. Since the .45-70 was illegal[by .3" case length], the next best thing was the 1894 .44 mag. After this year, no regrets. Matter of fact, I sold my slug gun. Any questions, ask away.
