So you burn and then turn the ground with a shovel? How long after that do you put seed down?
Thanks

I'll be seeding and covering tomorrow, hope it rains on Sunday. Spent part of the last 2 days tilling the plot.

Took this today. Far end didn't come up like I wished, but I'm not shocked. Seed was leftover from last year

Okay, I didn't think it was going to happen, but got it. I'm so thankful! I did get the disk, and it really dug in. The soil was still moist and clumpy. My atv almost wasn't powerful enough. I had to leave it in 1st gear, and after about 1/2 hour it would get hot. Ran the disk over it 5 times, seeded and tried to smooth it out to cover seeds. It was a good effort, so I won't be disappointed in what comes up. I did the best I could. I fertilized after the 1st disk pass. Ended up using 3/4 acres instead of the 1.5, but this will be plenty. It should feed them for a while. Even though I still consider it baiting, the effort that it took was really gratifying. This seems to take any guilt away from the baiting complex.

My arms were tired from steering the ATV yesterday. Got 90% of it seeded, and dragged. Still waiting for more seed to show, but that's a throw and roll proposition, no soil prep needed as it's all done already.
The front blew thru here mid day, and dropped almost 3/4" of rain, so I'm a happy camper. I just wish we'd see some rain next week, but they are calling for sunny and dry.

Yep, we didn't get any rain yesterday, but predicting some tonight. If I get missed, I'll get nervous, because it is supposed to be dry all week, cooler though.

I was thinking about putting distance markers out. It would be really nice to do a cedar post for rubbing, but probably won't get to do this. I have yet to see a rub on this property.

Every one likes the weed free nothing but what You planted plots Buuut if you want a good killing plot and not a observation plot Put it in the ground and let the Native stuff and Natural regen stuff do its thing Think about this .the deer dont just walk in the field and start eating they move around more looking for preferd food .And lots more shot opportunities

Someone on here told me that it is mostly grass seed, and it is! I didn't read the label. Fortunately, I didn't buy much of it. Food is plentiful around me during hunting season (pretty much anywhere in Indiana), so I wanted something that they might like more than corn... just thinkin'.

I hate to see them struggle in the hard winters. Someday, I'd like to plant soybeans and leave them standing for the winter months.
I'm hoping the turnips will give them something to eat in the later months.

Jon, Walk through your field in the early morning. Your boots will be very wet. With these cool nights the dew is soaking the ground. Rain is good but dew happens every day and it is significant.

We had killed about 2/3 of our plot... The remaining 1/3 had a great stand of clover so we let it be... Started the tilling.. Ground looks good and moist...we will seed in the morning..

Woody, those box tillers are great aren't they? We've used my dads way more than we ever thought we would. Takes a ton of work out of the equation.

I can't think of anything else that can take you from a field to ready to plant in one swipe. The gent that does ours lives about a mile from our hunting area so it is pretty easy for him ..

throbak, that's exactly why I put out a variety of seeds. This plot is NOT a monocot planting!
Now, if I could find an affordable planter.... That is the thing that I struggle with the most - getting the seeds in the ground at the proper depth. Sunflower, corn, beans, oats, peas, brassicas. Anything that is supposed to be "X" distance under the soil surface I struggle with.
Broadcast spreading and getting good seed to soil contact is easy once its rototilled, dragged, seed spread and then rolled, or rolled, seed spread and rolled again.

Got my final little kill plot in Saturday, then we had about 3/10" of rain yesterday so that was nice.
Probably have close to 10 acres in plots this season; turnips, soybeans, and some pre-mixed blends a buddy gave me. The pre-mix stuff is Record Rack "Tonnage", Deer Creek "Buck & Bird Mix", and Bilogic "Grains & Greens Mix".
Unfortunately the deer have already beat up the soybeans pretty badly, nipping them off as they sprouted.
