Took a quick peek at my little throw and grow food plot I put out last Sunday. I was shocked at how much had popped up in just 6 days! Timely rain and lots of sun did the trick. There is a lot of clover coming in already. Very pleased! Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and let it continue to grow.

What throbak said. I store my excess seed in a non-functioning deep freeze in the barn. Keeps the critters from chewing on it.

Well, I got my fertilizer today, have all the seed and vegetation is dead. Now I just need my truck, but my daughter has it. It looks like I'll be disking and seeding Saturday. That shouldn't be too late, and calling for rain Sunday.

Will be getting our Gly this week or next and seeds will be on order this week. Got the new plots mowed this weekend. Ended up with 3 ~1/4 acre plots with about 1/4 acre of these weeds separating each plot. Really looking forward to this fall! Blazing a trail... one of the plots nearly done...

I hope so Jon. Like you, this will be my first time doing anything with a plot. It has been great fun so far!

Well, my wife went down to our place today and checked on my spots. About what I expected. Here is the one. I couldn't break up the ground well with hand tools so no good soil contact. My wife said some stuff was growing there, but looks like mostly on the end where I did manage to break it up a little. The other one seems to be turning out a lot better. Pretty good green up. She also pulled my trail cam card and another week of nothing. Starting to wonder if all the noise I made brush cutting and planting scared them off.

Swetz, how big of an area could you plant if you had the equipment?

Not sure really. Most of my land is wooded, but there is a decent sized area in the middle that is mostly brush, tall grass, and small trees. I'm not sure I'd want to clear it though from a habitat perspective.

I'm not sure I'd want to clear it though from a habitat perspective. That sounds like a potential honey spot to me. I like spots like that. You can use that area to draw them in, more so than a wild habitat. You need to understand that I don't know much about anything. However, here's a thought, you could clean it out for a 1/2-1 acre year around food plot. Depending on how much area you have, surrounding areas, food supply, ... You could create a sustainable safe haven for them. My neighbor has access to a place that has a 10ac corn field in the middle of woods. It is surrounded with just an access road. A few acres of tall vegetation is next to it where the deer bed. Even not knowing much, my eyes lighted up when I saw it. Does it get much better??? There are guys on here who do these things for a living, so they would know how to make the most out of your land, and there's plenty that can be done. However, whatever makes you happy is exactly what you should do. Enjoy that land and just be thankful for it.

I very much enjoy it. It's always been a dream of mine. The plan is to work on the place as time goes on. My father came out a couple weeks ago and we hinge cut a few trees to try and create some bedding and cover. Everything is very much in the experimental stages right now. Just trying some stuff on a small scale to see what works and what doesn't. I got a lot of stuff to still figure out such as access. Right now, the easiest way through the place is right through the middle which doesn't help scent and noise much.
We should be breaking ground on a barn that will have a small place to stay in soon (assuming not too many materials get stolen) which will give me a lot more opportunity to work on things. Making a 4.5 to 5 hour round trip drive is kind of limiting.

Fall plots are coming together. This is one of my personal plots I finished up. 2 inches of rain on it in the last 2 days too! Trophy Paradise Habitat Consulting "Trophies are built from the ground up" m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=852914431431752

How soon do I need to plant my winter wheat? Six to eight weeks before the first killing frost. Ideally, between now and the end of September.

Just rake it off and burn it or just burn the plot. That is your problem. Too much thatch. Seeds can't get to dirt and germinate. Burning is easy and good for the ground. Seems like plenty of surrounding green to stop the burn. Have a flat shovel handy when you burn. You can have great results. Burned several plots. Wife and I joke about a range fire. never happens. Good luck!

Thanks. Thought about burning it, but didn't have water or fire extinguisher available and was there by myself. I'm also adjacent to privately owned timber lands so was kind of worried about potential if it got out of control.

Just burn a square yard at a time. Have a flat shovel and it won't burn out of your control. If you are concerned about the burn do it after a rain. What county are you located? Heck, I'd help you just for something to do. My fields are finished and I enjoy growing stuff.
