As an avid hunter, do some of the stories of the way people get big bucks bother you. I am a very avid hunter, who was blessed with a wall hanger about 5 years ago. It has been that long and hundereds of hours in the woods and I have yet to see another one. But you here stories all the time of either the guy who has went out for the first time and killed a big buck, or the guy who just sat down late in his stand and 5 minutes later a monster walks by. I guess it sounds like sour grapes, but after a while you start to think, why do I not get that lucky! I told a guy in our camp the other day deer hunting is 90% luck. You can scout all you want, but in the end you are on their turf and they will walk by your tree on their time not yours.

No it doesn't. What bothers me is using Jesus Christ as a cuss word or any other cuss word for that matter on a forum.

I didn't take it that Jesus Christ was a cuss word? I agree, it's mainly luck!

Sometimes. I have a relative that doesn't even know what odor control is, doesn't scout, trim trails, or hang stands. He goes out opening morning of gun season, sits in the same spot every year and shoots the first brown thing that walks by. Unfortunatly, it is usually a nice 2 1/2 year old buck that would have been a bruiser in a year or two. Everyone else that hunts on our place lets the younger ones walk. That bothers me a little.
I think hunting is mostly being in the right spot at the right time. But, the more work and effort you put into it, the more often you are in that spot.

you'll learn after many years of deer hunting[for me 30+], not to let such things bother you. Some want to make a contest out of it, but essentially it comes down to you and the deer, and where you hunt. Plus it is a lot of "luck", but ya have ta make yer own luck....

Heck no. Big deer get killed by dumb luck a lot. Sometimes it's the rut, sometimes it's a hunter that does "all the wrong things" and finds a big deer where he "shouldn't" be. Quite a few get shot by guys doing "the right thing". That's hunting.
If you have the opinion that you are a better hunter than the "lucky" hunters, yet you shoot a lot of deer and no big ones, maybe you need to stop shooting average bucks. That is, if you are not happy with the size of buck you shoot, hold out until you do see a big one. He may not ever show, but at least you gave yourself a chance.
I feel I am an above-average hunter as far as knowledge and skill go. I should be, I've hunted for over 30 years. I have shot one buck that I consider above average. But I take as much enjoyment from the circumstances of the hunt as I do from the horns. This year I shot my buck stillhunting. Shot him is his bed from 40-45 yards. He was a respectable 9 pointer. To me that was a great hunt and one I'll always remember. I have no regrets. I might have shot even if he was a little smaller, never know.

I like hearing the stories of the first time hunters walking in and busting a bruiser. A lot of times that what it takes to make that new hunter a lifer. The big buck stories from opening day or opening morning of gun dont bother me either. I enjoy archery much more than gun season but there is something about opening day of gun season that is exciting. I know guys that hunt only opening day or weekend. For a long time I thought those guys arent as "serious' as I am but a lot of em are just as excited about opening day as I am. and there again let em bust a bruiser, it very well be all it takes for them to start getting into archery or other kinds of hunting. No jealousy here.

Nope .. I hunt for myself and to spend sometime with my Son before he grows up and moves out on his own. For me hunting is not about getting the biggest Buck or for that matter getting anything at all. What I remember most is the time I spent with my son; like the first time I took him deer hunting and he lasted one hour and it was off to Bob Evans for 3 cups of Hot Coco to warm him up. I hope even when I'm hunting by myself my outlook doesn't change. Yeah I get a few seconds of wish that was me; but, it goes away and I can be happy for the other hunter.
