The bigger they are the older they are, and the older they are the smarter they are. I feel for ya but it happens to all of us. Wade

Y'all have lots of info and back up your beliefs. That being said, I have deer hunter since 1978in Indiana and Ohio and previously 5 years in another state. I found the largest scrape I have ever seen (4'x6') on Aug 15th while squirrel hunting the opening day. When I saw it I didn't believe it to be a real scrape. I thought it was a mock scrape but there were doe tracks in it and a nice pile of dropping. While studying it a doe got up 10 yards from the scrape. She was bedded off the scrape, meaning she was in heat. On the other end of that, one year I saw a fawn with spots on Dec 24th.
Here is what I have heard and believe. The healthy, more mature does are receptive early, and regularly. This many time happens prior to what we call the rut. During what we call the rut, most other adult does come in heat. Post rut, which I have seen a few times, the less healthy does will come in heat. To top all of this, young does born this year will go in heat when they reach 60 to 70 pounds and they are staggered throughout the rest of winter. There are documented cases of breading taken place as late as Feb and March. I would suppose this would account for seen a spotted fawn at Christmas! I don't claim to know anything about it but this is what I have observed and believe.
As far as the amount of daylight affecting the rut, I think it might but, after the nuclear accident in Russia, the Laplanders were not allowed to sell their reindeer. That is the major income for that area. Scientists moved a herd of reindeer to Antartica to preserve them. For three years the deer continued to calf at the time they always had. All died because they were now being born in the winter. After the third year, they all changed their breeding/ calving to go along with their new habitat. Wade Wade

I went to the Madison Walmart and picked up 2 3-pk Wraith broadheads to use with my x-bow.They were half price and I also grabbed a collapsible spinning outfit to throw in the trunk of momma's car for $10.Can't complain if they are any good. The broadheads were $30 marked down to $15! Anybody know anything about this name broadhead? Wade

Duff, I can only go by what Paul himself told me.As I said, I haven't kept up with his doings since moving from Farmers Retreat to Rising Sun and that was back in the 90s I believe but I have had occasion to chat with him during the years we both worked for Ivy Tech in Lawrenceburg.I left there in June of 2006. Yeah, it doesn't really matter what tag you put on them.Coyote, wolf, coywolf, coydog, They are all smart strong cunning predators that wipe out others species as they find them.I don't condone killing a protected species, but how on earth would I know if I did? They look so much alike, it would be over before I could figure out what it was. The real problem that can develop from this crossing is that the red wolf and the eastern coyote look so much alike. You have to look pretty hard to tell one from the other. Our coyote is a nuisance. The red wolf is a protected species. The only way I can tell them apart is that the wolf is somewhat larger and appear to have longer legs in portion to the rest of their body.I know people that "think" they have killed a red wolf by mistaking it for a coyote.

I haven't kept up with what Paul is doing since he moved from Farmers Retreat to Rising Sun. I do know for a fact that at that time they were repopulating red wolf in southern Indiana. I also know he was contracted to supply specimens to other states and I believe the facility in North Carolina was established from Pauls stock.
What they are doing at this time, I couldn't say for certain but I would assume this was a long-term stocking program. The problem would be to get an official to admit it.
Paul offers tours he guides then hits you up for donations, which I guess is reasonable. It's a nice thing to take the family. The caveat is that you need to be aware that he is not a father, therefore, I have strong disagreements with the information he passes on to children. He told my three kids it was there right and responsibility to challenge authority! It took 4-5 years to reverse their attitude! Good luck. Wade

A lot of what is seen as a coywolf is actually a red wolf. There are 2 red wolf sanctuaries in southeastern Indiana. They have been raising red wolves for 30 plus years now and have been supplying the state with specimens to repopulate their original habitat which includes Indiana. The person that runs both in this area is Paul Strasser. There are other sanctuaries in other states but the ones being reintroduced here are all from Pauls stock. I'll add a link for your viewing. This one is from local news.
