I had open umbilical hernia surgery on March 27.
It was a fairly involved procedure where they had to peel the muscles back and insert mesh between the layers instead of the easier deal where they just plop mesh over the hole. It's supposed to work better, but the trade-off is a long painful recovery. I stayed four days in the hospital for pain control before staying with mom and dad for around six days. They had a lift chair that made things easier. I'm home now, and today I get my 14 staples out.
I actually did better than I would have thought. I'm able to move and get up and down ok. Not a lot of bumps other than one night a too-tight binder nearly suffocated me. Woke up breathing so shallow that I wasn't getting air. Talk about a headache.
Hospital staff was great right down to the housekeeping lady who got ice cream for my visiting daughter. Only hang-up, sadly, seems to be the surgeon and his office. The office made a lot of paperwork errors-a lot-- and the surgeon, well, lets just say I'd pick another one if I did it again. Very averse to answering questions of any kind, and the beside manner of Dr. Jekell. ( and sometimes his hairy alter-ego) Never know who you'll get.
Anyway, Give thanks I seem to be getting better. Will let you know what the doctor J says.

Get better soon. Sometimes I wonder about the docs. They seem distracted. Maybe it is all the ins and outs of insurance that does it to them.

Get better soon. Sometimes I wonder about the docs. They seem distracted. Maybe it is all the ins and outs of insurance that does it to them. It's a hard job. It must be stressful. On a positive note, the staff was fantastic. There was a lady from housekeeping who was particularly nice. We would banter as I did my "laps" around the fourth floor. I called her supervisor and "told on her" suggesting that she be recognized. Sometimes we are quick to complain, so I figure it's only fair to say something nice once in a while. Janitors get treated like crap, and few people really appreciate what they do. I told her that there is probably no job more important, especially in a hospital setting and it's the truth.

A little side note about doctors. My best friend, nephew, and two cousins are doctors. Two of them 1st graduated as a Chemical Engineers before becoming a doctor. Both of them have told me that any Electrical or Chemical Engineer are smarter than doctors. Both stated engineering require thinking theorizing. A doctor requires great memorization Both stated that Chemical engineering was a lot harder than medical school. Note: any skills that require thinking and theorizing are a lot smarter than someone that is very good in memorization.

I didn’t even know what an umbilical hernia was. I had to look it up! Not something I ever want to see! Prayers out to ya Sas! Yeah, you literally don't want to see it! Gross! Mine wasn't as dramatic as some photos--it was essentially my navel turned inside out, bulging and red. The staples in the navel were particularly fun.. Doc Bipolar told my wife ( I never got a post-op) that he found and corrected four more hernias that were beginning in the same general area. good news I guess.
