It’s a little bit of a drive depending on where you live in the county but, my friend had some luck at Brookville Lake in years past My Uncle has a friend who swears by Brookeville but he said it's swarming with hunters. Brookville can be very hot and it can also be very cold. Birds do see a decent amount of pressure, but some spots are harder to get to and so you can get some good hunts if willing to work.

I’m from Delaware County as well. I hunt a good amount of private land in south eastern Indiana and I also hunt a lot of public land all over the state. Birds aren’t abundant throughout the state, but there’s good numbers to be found if you scout and do some research. There’s several good WMA’s up north that I like to hunt and there’s also some good public areas down south that hold birds as well. There’s also a few turkeys on the WMA just to the East of us in Henry, but it’s very competitive and fairly pressured.

Wife has kin folk in eastern KY and western WV that we visit regularly. I never seriously considered hunting, but do know they kill turkeys every year. May have to start thinking about it now! That's what I would do. Give them a shout and tie it in with a family vacation. Let me know if you need some company, too! 😜

This is a fun night with dinner, drinks, and a lot of guns, bows, equipment and more being given away, raffled off, or auctioned off. I enjoy deer hunting, but spring turkey hunting is my true obsession. I hunted or called for someone 13 out of 18 days last year and hopefully will get to do the same this year.
In order to extend my favorite season, I will also be traveling to Michigan to chase longbeards this year. Anyone else going out of state this year?

Attention all hunters - there’s a Whitetails Unlimited Banquet Dinner in Delaware County at the fairgrounds in Muncie. Dinner is February 5th in the Heartland Building. For those who don’t know what this event is like, it is a very fun dinner and fundraiser to benefit the conservation and heritage of deer and deer hunting. There will be artwork, guns, gear, blinds, bows, tree stands, and more. Contact one of our local reps for tickets. We are offering some discounted tickets right now and also offering deals on raffle packs too.

In 1978 we had a bit of a blizzard here in west central Indiana that devastated the quail population. Since then, with the addition of habitat loss quail hunting here has become non existent. The State of Indiana never did squat to assist with any restoration of the quail habitat here, or to assist in any way with habitat development anywhere around here. We lost our entire culture of quail hunting here. Nothing from the DNR.. Now they want to raise the fees we have to pay to hunt deer and turkey. I don't believe for a second that we'll see a single penny of that money returned to west central Indiana by the State of Indiana. They take but never return a darn thing. This is exactly my thoughts on the matter as well. Indiana raises license fees, truck plate fees, trailer plate fees, boating fees, and all the other fees as well as taxes. What do we see in return? Again, I’m not saying I don’t believe we should’ve raised it somewhat - but to almost double it in one single year is a little bit excessive in my opinion. I also feel like it’s more about revenue for the state then it is for what they claim about habitat restoration, helping landowners with this and that and etc.

Explain why the outstate bundle shouldn’t double! Why? I believe in fairness to all hunters.. The DNR is raising our bundle license by 40% and the NR bundle by 86%. That percentage should be equal across the board. You want Indiana to get in a bidding war with other states? Sooner or later they will price out all NR hunters BOTH WAYS!Absolutely agree, Woody! Much better said than I could’ve typed out, too.

Not necessarily something that is completely out of left field. But was there any actual input from us outdoorsmen and women? Or was this just the numbers that the DNR heads came up with? Also, I know this will probably be a little controversial to some, but I think it is absolutely ridiculous for them to almost double to out of state bundle license. Yep... They just pushed my Non-Resident grandson to be a buck only deer hunter while he is hunting with me.. My best friend and I have hunted every year together since we both got out of the military. He lives in Tennessee now and, even though it’s much cheaper to hunt in state, he has still been here every year and we’ve had many great memories. With this price increase, it may make it too much for him to justify the travel, the license, the process fee, and all that goes into two or three weekends of hunting. I hope that is not the case, but that is very possible. Greg Hopper - if you look at the increases for nonresidents, it appears as though they specifically targeted nonresident deer hunters. Turkey fee only increased 55 dollars. The game bird stamp for a nonresident did double but it is still only 11 dollars. That means an out of state turkey hunter is going to pay 200 bucks and get one bird. An out of state deer hunter is going to pay 550 and get three deer. Kentucky, you pay 335 and get three deer or 315 and get three turkeys. Ohio, little over 200 dollars and you get two turkeys. For deer, I believe it is 260 and some change and you get two deer. Both are neighboring states, both have similar or better hunting, and both have more public land available. Why do we think we should charge more?

Some friends and I are going to do a trip out of state next spring. We’re looking pretty seriously at Michigan. Wanting to go after the Indiana season is over with. Anyone here have any experience hunting this state? Any guides they would recommend or leads on some different areas they might suggest? Also interested in hearing anyone’s experience hunting here

Does anyone here make wingbone calls or know of anyone that makes them? I harvested a bird this year and would like to make one but have no idea what I am doing, even after watching a few videos and reading a little online. Was wondering if anyone here knew anyone or if anyone might be able and willing to show me how to do it since this would be my first effort.

I don’t doubt eagles, coyotes, and bobcats take out a few here and there, but I’ve listened to several podcasts here recently that featured Dr. Mike Chamberlain, who is considered by many a turkey expert, and Dr. Chamberlain talked about owls being a huge predator for wild turkeys. He also talks a lot about nest predators like raccoons and etc. Would highly recommend listening to any podcast that he is featured on as it is very interesting and informative.

So I helped my twin son and daughter sight their deer rifles in today. Thought it would be a quick and easy five or so shots each just to check scope. Well, that was not the case. My daughters gun for some reason was all over the place and ended up switching to my backup gun, a 44 lever. Got them both sighted in, but also ended up going through more ammo than I had planned started out with 1.5 boxes and now have less than half a box. Didn’t think about it until I was cleaning up and putting things away and then remembered that because everyone is freaking out about guns and ammo, there’s an ammo shortage currently. So jumped online and called around a few places only to find out that there’s no one that can even get them right now. I can’t believe it. So- all that to ask all of you guys if anyone has an extra box or two. I’d be willing to drive all the way to your driveway and pay for them too. Or maybe someone knows where I might be able to find some at a small town shop somewhere or something? Hoping to find some here ASAP. Thanks guys.

I have a Mossberg 935 pistol grip shotgun and I love this gun. I am using the longbeard xr choke and longbeard xr’s and the pattern is pretty solid out to about 50 yards.
Other guns I would recommend: the 930 is a good gun if you don’t want to shoot 3.5 in shells
Remington 1187 is a very solid choice too. Have borrowed a few from friends and family. We used a jelly head turkey choke and Remington nitro turkey and pattern was solid to 40-45 yards.
My uncle has a Charles Daly 635. It is surprisingly a very nice and economical shotgun. I had heard mixed reviews about the Charles Daly shotguns but this one is nice. He got an undertaker choke for it and it has good patterns to 50 yards. It is very lightweight and it definitely packs a punch as far as recoil goes.

I was blessed with a wonderful new job opportunity back in August and it has been a great company to work for so far. I can honestly say I love going to work everyday. However, I am on the road a lot. I have a territory that spans northern Illinois and northern Indiana as well. With that being said and turkey season fast approaching, I am considering taking my gear with me and when I have the time, trying to squeeze a hunt in. I don’t know much about the northern Indiana properties, though, as I’m used to hunting southern Indiana. I’m not asking for anyone’s sweet spots or secrets or anything like that. I’m just wondering if there’s any turkeys on some of these northern Indiana properties. I have a lot of projects around willow slough, Tri-County FWA, Salamonie, and a few others. So if anyone can just give me some insight as to whether there are decent numbers of turkeys around these properties or if I would be wasting my time.
