I was 35 and had just barely seen a deer in the 3 years that I had been hunting. My son wanted to start hunting so I got him all ready. We put in for big oaks and got drawn for the first 2 one day gun hunts for that year (02). We got to our area well before first light and just stopped along the road and walked in. I took kyle and sat him down in a spot that looked somewhat open, but in the dark it is hard to tell. Then I went another 200 yards into the woods and found another opening. I plopped down in front of a big tree checking my compass to make sure that I was facing away from him and the tree was between he and I so there would be no accidents. About an hour after first light I am looking to my left and as I turn back right a doe runs by me from my right not more than 10 yards in front of me. When she gets about 40 yards past me she stops broadside. As I take aim I notice that she is looking back to where she came from so instead of shooting at her I turn to see if a buck is following. About this time another deer comes out of the woods from my right. He runs out in front of me about 40 yards and as I'm getting ready to shoot at him he starts running again. He runs to about 10 yards in front of me and then notices that I'm there, but it was to late by then. he ran about 50 yards and crashed. It was the greatest button buck that anyone had ever shot.
Oh by-the-way I shot my second deer that very same day. It was a basket racked 8, but I couldn't have been happier. Actually I could have been if Kyle wouldn't have missed the buck that he got a shot at.

bighorn,
on this thread you say that you didn't get drawn for any hunts, but you started a thread that said that you got drawn for big oaks oct 18 and 19. Which is true? I tried to give you some info on the other thread, but now am wondering why you were asking.

well I have hunted there for the last 5 years. It isn't what it used to be that is true. I only live about a 20 minute drive across town. We have hunted the same area all but 3 times from what I've seen the north area is thicker and harder to hunt especially from the ground. The south has more open areas in and out of the tree lines this is caused by them having controlled burns. I've seen pictures of deer that come from the north they seem to be bigger probably because they are older, but it is a little easier to hunt the south. Above areas 31 and 32 I concider north. If you hunt the same area year after year you can use what you've learned as scouting. This year everything could be different because of the hurricane that came through, lots of trees down in the whole county.

I voted agree to either sex shooting. My son opted to skip the youth season the first year that it was offered because he could only shoot does. Not that he is an antler only hunter, but if we were going to be in our hunting spot and hunting he didn't want to have to pass on a buck if one presented itself. He has killed 2 does a year every year for the last 3 years he also has 2 nice 10 pointers on the wall.

We're back in Indiana. We had an amazing trip. There were 168 people from out of state in Cleveland, TN this last week. It was the biggest group that they had ever had. We worked on 13 different sites and had 25 professions of faith. We didn't have any major accidents or people get hurt(well I guess that depends on who you were, there was one guy that got his rearend burned when he sat on the roof that they were fixing 2nd degree burns, but it didn't slow him down)
thanks again for the prayers just need to keep praying for the people that accepted Christ,
scott

Thanks Woody. My son got home last night and when asked if he was going back. His response was that he would be a college kid next year and he thinks that he's going for the summer. The church plant is very excited they had their first baptism while he was there. He said that the temp was in the 20's at night and they did the baptism in the resevior in the morning and the water was very cold. But he said that the baptism was awsome!!

It's not church, that's why we don't hunt on Sunday at my house, but it is a very good time to have a long and meaningful talk with God, and thank him for all things.(good and bad) The bad things He uses to test and teach us to be more like Him.

Hey guys,
I just found the spiritual support section tonight. I wish I would have found it earlier. My son is being picked up from the airport as I type this. He and our youth pastor are just getting back from Peru where our church is working on a church plant. I want to thank God for their safe return, but am going to ask for prayers from you for the 2 college kids that we have down there for the summer.
I am also going to ask that you pray for the mission trip that the rest of my family and about 30 members of our church are going on starting on Sunday the 19th. we are going down to Cleveland, TN for a week. We will be holding 2 vacation bible schools at 2 different churches, and we are also roofing a house. So, we could use all of the prayers that we can get.
Thanks, Elmo

Son and I have kind of agreed that during early bow that it has to be at least 8 points to take a shot. But, come gun and ml seasons we can get less picky. There are quite a few 8's walking around the place that we hunt so they are usually the buck of choice ( and opportunity). We do usually take 3 or 4 does between us.
