Got drawn for Big Oaks on Oct. 18 & 19th. Since I have never hunted there before, what would be some good areas to hunt or put in for ? Is it worth going down there? It will be a 3.5hr. drive for me and have to stay overnight somewhere...... Thanks in advance. Shawn

Sorry to have bothered you Mr. GregHopper !!!!! Most people I have talked to on here will bend over backwards to help someone out.
Guess that wouldn't be you !!!!!!
F.Y.I
It was put down as my 2nd choice...... Figured it would be some place new and that I could get some information from the guys here.
Guess I might have figured wrong !!!!

I cant help you cause I only hunted there once and that was several years ago. The area we hunted was all the way north and took 1/2 drive to get there. This was during a open bow hunt. I don't put in there because its too far of a drive. When you hunt there you have to pay a tress pass fee of 15.00 or have a federal duck stamp and watch a 1/2 hour video before your hunt. The part I hated the worse was standing in line waiting to sign up. Good luck, h.h.

I also got drawn for Big Oaks Bow Oct 18-19, My son and I will go.
I've hunted Big Oaks twice in the past.....IT'S NOT A GIMME HUNT, you actually have to HUNT the deer.
We will go down Friday and secure a place to stay, and watch the safety video, that way we will be ready to hunt on the 18th!
There are alot of deer in there but it's a BIG place too!

IMO it's not what it used to be. When the military had it the deer were everywhere. You could count over 100 just driving to your area. Some people still like but It's not one of favorable choices. I always like far north end. It had more ravines and hollows. Like Camby said it's not "given" when it comes to seeing deer. I'm sure there are people that spend a lot of time there and know the more productive areas.

well I have hunted there for the last 5 years. It isn't what it used to be that is true. I only live about a 20 minute drive across town. We have hunted the same area all but 3 times from what I've seen the north area is thicker and harder to hunt especially from the ground. The south has more open areas in and out of the tree lines this is caused by them having controlled burns. I've seen pictures of deer that come from the north they seem to be bigger probably because they are older, but it is a little easier to hunt the south. Above areas 31 and 32 I concider north. If you hunt the same area year after year you can use what you've learned as scouting. This year everything could be different because of the hurricane that came through, lots of trees down in the whole county.

Bighorn, try to ignore the negative behavior.
In my opinion it is worth it. I went two days in 2006 and only saw three or for deer, but they are there, and there are a lot of big ones. It's a very interesting experience.
If I can think of it I will ask my friend, who has hunted there forever, what areas you should put in for. You have to call them and ask, I believe.

Bighorn,
On the parks military refuge thread you say that you didn't get drawn for any hunts. How can this be?

I got drawn for Big Oaks for Archery but not for any gun hunts. Sorry if that was unclear....
I got my name put in for Area 38 at Big Oaks for the 18th & 19.
Gonna give it a shot and use it as a scouting trip if nothing else just in case I would get drawn for there again down the road.

Got drawn for Big Oaks on Oct. 18 & 19th. Since I have never hunted there before, what would be some good areas to hunt or put in for ?... Shawn Shawn, In the last four years my brother and I have hunted there twice for deer and once for turkey. We have never been successful. Nevertheless we're going back this year on Nov 8 & 9. All you can do if you haven't hunted there before is go to their deer hunt page on their website. At the bottom is six years of harvest numbers by area, gun and archery success ratios by area, and other info. Take a look at these and make your best guess. Hope you guess better than we did the prior two deer hunts. ;D Here is a link to the site. www.fws.gov/midwest/BigOaks/deer.htm
