Called in a box turtle. He came right in like he was on a string, but hung-up at about 2 yards. I'm thinking about getting aggressive with my calling to try and bring him on in. How about Box Turtle decoys next time. biggrin2

First long beard for Jon Snow: Oh man, I had a great weekend! I went to a veteran turkey hunt in Corydon with my Marine friend; we both harvested a bird. What an amazing event that they put on for the vets. I hunted Friday morning from a blind, but no luck. We did try to sneak up on a Jake, but no. On Friday evening, they set me up with a high school kid who was my guide. This young fella got me on a bird; he was amazing! We went to his dad's farm and sat in the woods along a field. After 30 minutes, he says, "I'm just not feeling it here." He went down a bit and spotted two toms and a jake through his binoculars at the end of the field. He asked if I wanted to walk down a "holler" to sneak up on them. I was more than happy to give it a try. He said that it was rocky and rough for about 150yds. Well, it was rocky and rough, but 500yds if it was one ...which seemed like a hike through the Grand Canyon to me. Just before we got to our spot, I thought, "This might actually kill me." Then the next thought was, "It's worth it!" This young fella sneaked up the hill side and spotted them, and signaled me to join him. When I get up there, we're looking though leafy growth, but they were there, and looking right at me. He says, "Shoot now or never." ...and the rest is history.

Sitting on top of a ridge on some private ground in Dubois County. Haven't heard a bird, but that was kind of expected after driving around downed trees the last mile here. Guess the storms were pretty rough last night.
They don't have to gobble to get shot though.

Called 2 gobblers up to the edge of the wood 4 different times in the last 2 hours. They keep leaving and coming back, but won't get within 40 yards.

Not sure he's ready for a 10 ga. Lol. He shoots TSS and killed an Osceola at 40 last month then missed a Merriam at 25. Killed a tree though.

Fur prices low. Few trapping. Skunk, coons, possum, crows. They don't get to hatch. A coyote will take one here or there maybe, the ones mentioned before will kill 6 to 12 each nest. Most shoot every coyote they see. How many shoot every nest robber they see. My opinion. I did till my hound fell out of a tree last year breaking his back and ended my season.

If it eats an egg it dies,if it eats a game animal it dies. Do you have many turkeys in the northern part of the state? One year I met some guys who had driven down from that area to Martin County Forest to hunt turkeys.
