Throwing in the towel. Wind has been building big time and a big branch just crashed down real close.
I really have a busy schedule not good for hunting most of the week. May try to get back out Friday morning, and then the weekend again.
Good luck fellow sportsman brothers. Always fun being part of a great group of guys and sharing the experience.

Another fairly quiet morning. Had one gobbling at daybreak, watched him pitch down and beat feet it across the field, across the road and ended up behind my house gobbling. Of course I was across from my house where he was roosted....feeling your pain Woody....woulda shoulda coulda! Some days you just gotta laugh......soooo after this morning's hunt I mowed here at the house and then headed into town to mow at the school awhile. Got down to the end of the driveway and I'll be d*$%@( if there weren't 2 toms not 40 yards from the blind I was in this morning. I believe though I know their trick....I think they utilize some kind of camera system as well to know when I am not there. Tomorrow morning is a new day!

We sat out. Luke wanted to sleep in anyway. I got up to the big boomers and heavy rain. I needed to recharge anyway. We got 1" rain. We plan to be back for the afternoon hunt today. What big boomers? I never woke up. I had 2.25" in the gauge by the pond. The woods there is starting to get flooded. Pond is finally full!!

Went back to Michigan today and called for my buddy that got me on the property. Had a great time and even got him a bird. Same place I shot mine from yesterday. It was a nice jake, you can tell by his smile he was pleased with it.

If it is legal...and I have a tag it is getting used. 10 min or last day

Sweet! I'm finding plenty of hunters don't have anything against shooting jakes.... If it's got a beard, it's dead. They still produce a huge bowl of good meat (if you're only taking the breasts!). My first bird was a jake, my second (fall season) a poult. Both had breasts that completely filled one large bowl. That meat lasted for a while. Pretty tender. Now on to the adult birds......

Does anyone have any tips for hunting quiet gobblers in the middle of a thick wood? This place I go to has a ton of brush, to the point where trying to sneak through it is not much of an option. Lots and lots and lots of honeysuckle and other shrubs in there. Visibility in there down to 20 yards. Both of the turkeys I've ever killed were on that property, but were heading to roost in the open woods on the east side near State Rd. 41 and 63 (the property goes right up to the highway; hunting there is really noisy because of all the traffic). I know that the flock size is pretty decent at about 15-17 birds. I've only heard one wild tom there this spring but from experience know that there are a few other decent toms.

Today was made for turkey hunting. Sunny, calm, and cool, birds were gobbling 35 mins before legal in just about every direction. Had 3 sneak in behind me spitting and drumming about 20 feet away couldn't get turned around but they didn't spook they just walked away. I readjusted my seating and about 1/2 hour later I managed to to call a single out of a small group and just like that I finally ended a 3 year drought. I took a Jake with a 6" beard weighing 17 pounds. I will post a photo later. Learned a lot this year, can't wait for next year.

I filleted out the breasts, saved the tenderloins in a separate package and ground the legs and small bits. This bird will provide us with some interesting culinary delights at a later date. Next week our group will be on Lake Erie for our first Walleye trip of the year.

All i can say is work is stupid. I have been to two work confereces since turkey opener. 1st opening day i missed since i stared hunting them in the late 80's. Work gets in the way of my hobbies and i dont like it.

I need to do the same one of these days, and/or get junior his chance.
