I took my cousin out for his first rabbit hunt yesterday. We hunted public land and each managed a bunny. Missed a few too. I went back and tried a different unit today and managed another. Yesterday we were walking along the edge of thickets where they meet more open woods or fields. Rascals would not run out into the open for a clear shot. Every one took off straight into heavy cover. It's like they know. Today I walked along a creek bottom and they were coming out of the tall grass and running up the creek bank away from me. Funny watching the grass shake as the rabbits run along underneath. Then out pops the rabbit into the woods. Anyone else stomping brush? Here's today's.

I would be out but with the way the forecast is looking I figure I better get out and hunt ducks while I can. Once it freezes up I'll get out a few times.

Hunted solo for a couple hours yesterday afternoon. Saw three, killed two. I wish the snow would hang around but it looks like warm temps and rain are coming for this weekend. May have to give the squirrels a try.

Rabbit hunt turned into a squirrel hunt today. But given the conditions I was happy to get this one. This pic was taken on his front porch, his house is in the background.

Since the owner of where I hunt don't want me hunting anything while deer season's on I have to wait until it's all over. I usually only manage to get out once or twice a season anyways because of my health so it's usually in late January or February before I go and that depends on the weather.

Went out today with my pops, and his 11 year old beagle. Didn't shoot any today just getting the dog some exercise and a tune up for her nose. She didn't do bad for first time out since last year. Couple more trips working her then we will take a few.

Another trip out today with my pops. The dog ran a rabbit for about 20 minutes nonstop today. Had to shoot it so she could get the fur in her mouth. Ran a couple more as well but it is so thick in there they just wouldn't come out. Still a good time.

Went out today with two of my cousins. Walked for a couple hours before seeing any and then when we finally jumped a couple they were out too far. After another hour of walking we decided to head back to the truck. I mentioned that there was a field corner on the way back that held a blow down out of which I had jumped a rabbit on two previous trips. I missed him each time. This time I went into the woods and my cousins stayed out on the field edge. I was just about to give up when I heard my cousin holler and shoot. Got him. The third time was the charm. I had a lot of fun today and got some good exercise. I think I'll try a new spot tomorrow.

Managed to go two for two today. Both rabbits flushed out of tall grass along a creek bank. A productive tactic has been having one hunter walk along the bottom of the creek or side hill of the creek bank and another hunter several yards back from the crest to shoot them as they run up and out.

Last time I shot some rabbits I had given them to the guy I was hunting with.
However, I would like to shoot some more and keep them for myself. I was talking with my wife at her family's house yesterday and we got on the topic of eating rabbits. I thought it would be nice to get some and take them over there to eat.
Although I found a good video on how to clean them right, he was using a pressure cooker to preserve them. I don't have a pressure cooker so I was thinking of freezing a few at a time. Is anyone willing to share some good tips on freezing them?
Thank you.

If you don't have a vacuum sealer you could put them in a container, fill the container with water to cover, then freeze. Should eliminate the chance of freezer burn. But, will of course, take longer to thaw and use more freezer space.

I do have a food saver vacuum sealer. Thanks for the info👍 No problem. Also, I soak all my rabbits and squirrels in a saltwater brine for a day after they're shot. Brining lean meat like squirrels and rabbits can help keep them moist and tender. The brining also does a great job of enhancing the appearance of the meat by removing blood and leaving a nice pale colored flesh.

I went out solo today and hunted a unit I've never been before. I saw 7 rabbits but shot opportunities were limited due to the thickness of the cover. I ended up with two, which is a pretty good day for me.
