Well, It seems like a beautiful morning for a rabbit hunt. A little snow on the ground for some tracking would have been nice. But, I'm just happy to have the chance to go out and kick of some sticks and beat the brush.
Hopefully I'll have a pic or two to post when I'm done.
Getting ready to make some breakfast then head out.
Good luck to anyone else getting out there.

1 for 2 this morning. We need some snow. I covered a ton of ground. I saw a lot of squirrels though.

Maybe over gunned or shot him too close. The front legs were destroyed along with the first quarter of his back straps. Still got him cleaned, quartered and in the freezer.

I'm using 2 3/4" Federal target/game loads with 7 1/2 shot.
Chokes are improved cylinder on the under (first shot) and a modified on the top.
The shot was probably no more than 5 yards. It was under the canopy of a blow down. It didn't even make it out of the cover.
I honestly probably won't take this gun out again for rabbits. I found myself being too hesitant to go into some of the choked down thickets due to fear of scuffing it up. I will probably just take the 20 gauge single shot Winchester model 37 next time. That ol' gal has many a battles scars!

If you have a shot size recommendation, please let me know.

If you have a shot size recommendation, please let me know. I typically use 1 ounce load of #6 shot. Seems to work well for me. I shoot improved cylinder choke and usually shot opportunities are close range like you described. My hunting partner often uses 7.5s. He shoots improved cylinder as well. His rabbits generally are a bit more destroyed. Plus it seems like the smaller shot really pulls the fur into the meat moreso than the larger shot. There are, I think, about 125 more pellets per ounce in 7.5s than 6s. Congrats on the rabbit! I hope we get this snow tonight. I got skunked today and I'm ready for another crack at it tomorrow.

I like 1 Oz 6 shot and prefer high brass to punch through the brush better

A couple of hours of walking between the first and second rabbit. But I managed to go two for two. The snow on the ground and lack of wind made for an enjoyable afternoon.

Outstanding! I'm hoping we get the snow here this Wednesday and again on Friday. Everything that was falling here today melted as soon as it hit the ground.

I've found that shot size larger than #6 typically patterns worse than the smaller sizes. I'd shoot #6's and use either cylinder choke or Improved cylinder choke. The smaller the shot size, the faster the pattern opens up. Think about throwing a handful of fine sand vs. a handful of pebbles.
When you shoot skeet, "skeet" Choke is used, which is .005" constriction, IC choke is .010" constriction. Cylinder choke is .000" constriction. Skeet is meant to be shot at a clay bird that is 21 yards away.....

I walked 600 or so yards yesterday at my typical spot and didn't kick up anything. I didn't even really see any sign so I'm thinking it's probably a down year.

I walked behind the barn yesterday and there was a bunch of rabbit fur strewn around.
