Had a wonderful morning even though I got out late, 9am, from staying up to late, midnight! Grabbed my rifle and my new chair ,thanks deadeer, and headed out to my woods. Got 4 real nice hickory trees but only one is really producing nuts. Pretty good breeze going on today so that helped keep the bugs at bay. Got situated between two of the hickory's so I could watch both for activity . Finally seen something moving. Got up and snuck in closer. Found a black one sitting eating. Found my sights, which is really hard to do nowadays, got lined up and MISSED! Second shot did find its target and down it came with a thud. Looked back up to see squirrels going everywhere!! So by 10:30 I had fired 12 shots ,2 shots where finishing shots from 2 feet away, and got 5 squirrels out of one tree. At least 2 others got the heck out of Dodge. So 5 for team Fort Nuts. Now off to get cleaning.

I've seen mostly grays, but Fox squirrels also at Owen-Putnam, but I've never seen a black squirrel in my life. They're freaky looking.

Got out this morning & shot the only squirrel I saw but it didn't hit the ground?? I guess I didn't hit it as hard as I thought or it got hung up in the tree somewhere. I'll try again this evening if it doesn't get too hot.

I'll try again this evening if it doesn't get too hot. Been a few of us already this year have one disappear that we have dropped out. I used .22 Shorts one year at the start of season and did pretty good for a couple of hunts. Then I dropped one out of a tree that was about 50 yards out and never could find it. Went back the next weekend and ended up killing that squirrel with the first bullet still stuck in it and infection starting to spread. Kept the hind legs and threw the rest away. That is the year I switched over to the RWS Subsonic rounds. RWS priced me out of buying their ammo and I settled on the Remington Subsonics. The subsonic hollowpoints really are a lot better at anchoring the squirrels than the solid Shorts. Of course, now I am paying for the Remington's what I would not give RWS for theirs. I will say the RWS dirtied up the bore very quickly.

Not part of a squad, but took daughter #2 out for her first year. Bagged a few Grey's. She had a blast.

Hey bullseye! Great shooting with the old iron sights! Love the pics, too! I take it that was with the Winchester!? What model is that? Any idea on the year?

Well, third day out, and zero squirrels. Had a shot at a gray, Sunday, and missed other than that, I'm just not seeing them. I realize I've got dry eye, and am getting old, but I'm not seeing the nut cuttings, or seeing any movement, in the trees. Gonna go again in the am., to my 4th different woods, to see if I can pick up any action. My impression is we don't have the population around here, this year.

In my area just a month ago there where a lot. Then the Redtail hawk moved in. Bummer, not one left. Asked my wife last night and said the same. They are gone. Must be a family of hawks.

I was walking back to the truck, got within sight (about 20ft) from my truck so I went ahead and broke open my shotgun. Took one step and saw a lil bugger hanging out on a limb over me, loaded without looking and dropped the second shell. He heard that, I missed. He jumped off the branch and I missed the second shot. Real disappointing day, count still at none.

Mark up 2 more for team 3,The fuzzytail bandits. It started out good in a way, right after I got in the woods I saw and got something I haven't seen in the country here in 45 years of squirrel hunting,a gray squirrel. We've always had them in town, but never out here in the country. I saw and missed sever times,a few in the group of hickory trees I see some in every year but it's really hard to get a decent shot there the way everything is situated. The 2nd one I got was in a small oak right beside the hickory trees where I'd seen 1 earlier but couldn't get a shot. I got him because he was barking at me and didn't shut up until the bullet hit him in the head 😅. Again though,it didn't kill him and he was trying to crawl away. 4 squirrels so far and they all needed at least 1 more shot in the head whether I'd already hit them in the head or not,I'm so done with these solid points, time for hollow points.

Put down 1 more, for team #1 LCB. Saw two this am. Shot at the first one, and missed. Then this booger barked right behind me. So, I turned and head shot him!
