Here is a picture of my 358 BFG wildcat PCR. Its a 25 WSSM necked up to .35 caliber. It sports a 4.5X14 Weaver Grand Slam scope and Excalibur recoil pad. I'm shooting 180 grain Speer SP @ 2800 fps. The 22" barrel is from McGowen. I also built one for schoolmaster but his has a 24" barrel and 3.5X10 Leupold Vari-X III. His load is a 200 grain Barnes TSX @ 2640 fps. Cost of building one of these guns are about $1200 plus $150 for the Hornady BFG dies. Both guns are built on Savage 16 Weather Warrior WSM actions. My gun shot 5 shot group of just under 1" @ 200 yards, schoolmaster's was 1.5 @ 200 yards. If anyone is wanting to build one of the guns you should contact Bryan at BFG Design LLC. Bryan is a member of HI. Barrel waiting time is almost 2 months. h.h. Attachments:

If you dont mind me asking, what does a custom gun like that cost and how much would the custom reloads run.

Good looking rifles hh! That is some happy groups. Is the recoil comparable to say a .243 or more like a .30-06 or? What is the trajectory like, are you zeroed at 200yds?

Cost breaks down like this, donor gun = 500.00, barrel = 370.00, scope, mounts & rings, 400.00 - 500.00 depending on brands. Bryan has brass for about 1.75 each or you can make your own by fire form, turning the neck and trimming to 1.618 - 1.620. Brass lasts many firings. I'm at 18-19 loadings on some and still going strong but I anneal it every 3-4 firings.
Recoil is slight less than a 20ga shotgun to me. schoolmasters is set 3 1/2" high @ 100 and dead on @ 200 yards, mine is 1/2" high @ 100 and 2 1/2" low @ 200 yards. schoolmaster likes his guns set high @ 100 yards and I don't. Reason being a few years ago I had my 10ML loaded up to shoot the exact same grain load my BFG shoots and shot high on two deer. One of them I shot completely over her back. Since then I never set my scopes over 1" high.
One more thing, I had to widen the barrel channel on the factory stocks in order to get the barrel to fit. I also bedded the actions and the recoil lugs are thicker made by Sharp Shooters Supply. h.h.

What caliber did the rifle start out as (ie what boltsface do you need) 270 or 300WSM I assume? I assume you used 25WSSM go/no go guages? Is there any reason it couldn't be done in blue?

Thanks for the details hh! Not in the budget this year but one day I hope to build one of the rifles.

Dave, Mine started out as a 300 WSM and schoolmasters was a 7mm WSM. You need the .532 bolt face. I used a sized case to set my head space but Bryan will let you use his .358 BFG guages and I imagine the 25WSSM guages would work. I'm not sure you can get the barrel in white but I imagine you could. If you use the Savage action its pretty much just a barrel swap. 180 grain bullets will hang up sometimes when cycling the bolt but a simple plastic ramp fixes that problem. Mine is a double stack mag and holds two down and one in, schoolmaster is the new single feed and holds 3 down and one in. BFG also offers this in a Encore barrel. How does this round compare to a .358 wssm? Thanks fullrut, Im not sure but I think its pretty much the same cartridge with maybe a difference in the neck thickness. h.h.

These are awesome examples of ingenuity. Thing is, these guns easily outperform my good old 30/30, or even my 45/70, and are 100% Indiana legal. Makes me irritated. I'd be tickled if I could only use the guns I already have that fall short of them. I'll keep dreaming for now.

I should clarify my irritation is with the rule-makers, not the rifle-makers.

I should clarify my irritation is with the rule-makers, not the rifle-makers. Agreed, I think it is ignorant as well. For deer hunting purposes, that gun will shoot as far and accurate as any "illegal" rifle.

I'd be tickled if I could only use the guns I already have that fall short of them. I'll keep dreaming for now. Now, now you know if everyone got to use a 30/30 or a 45/70 or even a .35 Remington the woods would be like a war zone and all you would get done is dodge bullets. Not to mention everyone's home would be all shot up and it wouldn't even be safe to go to Krogers. ;D I also wish they would change the rules and at least let us use some of the more traditional rounds for deer. I believe the current set of rules are rather anal retentive and asanine but it is what it is and it will be like this until some people are able to see past their own objectives and do what's best for everyone.

Not trying to bust someones chops but instead of complaining about the rules why not sell a couple of your rifles that are not legal in Indiana and build one of these? These rifles will be legal the same place a 30-30 or 06 would be a have better performance. I imagine it will be a long time before the IDNR changes the rules to allow all center fire rifles for deer season but who knows, look how far we come in the last 10 years or so. h.h.
