Thanks for the tips guys. The only positive thing about my miss on Sunday is that it wasn't one of the two bucks that I saw. I can't wait to get back in the new area of the property that I decided to hunt.

Don't shoot a deer.
Pick a spot and shoot at that spot on the deer. Sage advice from one of the masters.

Been a while since I've been on. Very busy lately. Out a couple of times, but the weather isn't co-operating much. Seen some Does and a small Buck, very small, Nothing in range yet, or right size. I will make it up though, keep up the good work partner. Looks like you got some good snacks there.

Suitcase,
I studied aikido for about ten years out east, and there are some relaxation/focus tricks from that art that apply to bowhunting/shooting that I've found useful:
1. When an animal is approaching, calm your breathing to long, slow deliberate breaths, "in through the nose, out through the mouth". With each exhalation, relax you shoulders.
2. When you draw, as you complete the motion, relax and "sink" your shoulders. (When you're tense, you tend to hold up your shoulders, which stiffens your upper body and neck muscles, which in bowshooting will affect the smoothness of your release.)
3. As Woody said, when aiming, focus your mind on the precise spot you want the arrow to strike, and send your mental energy to that spot.
4. As you prepare to release take an inhalation breath, then slowly exhale through your mouth, and when the moment is right, release the arrow as you continue to exhale.
When target shooting, visualize in your mind that the target is a deer which has come to your stand, and practice the breathing/relaxation/draw/release cycle each time you take a shot. That way, you will ingrain that process into your mind and body, and you won't have to "think" about it when hunting.
Good luck and good hunting...
KD
PS Some good reading is "Zen & The Art of Archery" by Eugen Herrigel. Explains the difference between "mechanical aiming" and a more focused, relaxed approach to "sending the arrow to the target"...

Hunted for 2 hrs this morning before work. Saw 2 small bucks, one forkey and one decent 8 pointer. I have some trail cam pics of him, but not a shooter for me. Both moved past slowly feeding on acorns. I've heard a lot of hype about an early rut...if so those boys didn't read the same articles as I did !

Thanks jkd. I will try to focus on breathing and relaxing prior to release. The only bad part is that I am not getting back out until 10-28. The good news about that is things ought to be pretty heated up by this point.

Me and my daughter got to hunt a little during our early muzzleloader season last weekend . While we were only hunting together in the afternoons we didnt see much activity and nothing to offer her a shot oppertunity . All in all... deer movement is slow...we have such a abbundance of acorns the deer are not having to go far to find food . Too much of a good thing ...if you can relate. I hunted by myself on Saturday morning and had a bachelor group of three bucks .....a forkhorn , a basket racked 7pt and one buck ...due to leaves and limbs never got a good look at . He has peeked my curiosity a little . He was the latter buck of the three , he never entered the more open areas of the woods and he split away from the rest of the group and slipped into a cedar thicket without me ever getting a good look at his headgear . I'm thinking he was a decent buck . The other two bucks got as close as 50 yds..they kept browsing and finally wondered off going into the thicket as the other buck did . Sunday morning ...I hunted the same stand ....never seen the bucks but saw seven deer ...all does and fawns . I be glad when the bachelor groups split up and it shouldnt be much longer now . I have been finding lots of rubs and a few small scrapes along field eges and old logging roads . I usually take off work a few days around Holloween and get serious . I usually see more deer and have more buck encounters than any other time except for peak rut . Good Luck Everyone!!

Took off at noon Thursday for a afternoon archery hunt at Fairbanks Landing. Seen some buck rubs and 3 scrapes that were not there two weeks ago. There is also lots of corn missing from two weeks ago. We hunted from 3:00 till dark. Seen two antlerless deer....looked to be a mom & daughter duo. Got to watch them for almost two hours, as they were in and out of the harvested corn field. Never got close enough to even think about a shot.
Got up this morning and drove to my spot in Washington County for Shotgun Turkeys. It quit raining down there about 6:00am....perfect! We sat till 10:00am and my 12 y/o blew a shot on a hen (didn't have his gun in the shoot position and she picked him off when he moved)...didn't see no deer or much deer sign. I am worried about this because it's where we open gun season at!
Drove into Salem and made my reservations at the Salem Motel for opening weekend of gun season.
Then drove over to another spot I have in Lawrence County (on Meadow Church Rd) for more Shotgun Turkey and do some deer scouting. Didnt see no turkey but did bump 3 deer. This spot had plenty of deer sign, including some encouraging buck sign.
Getting up in the morning and heading back to Fairbanks....if it's not raining too bad we (son & I) will hunt the whole day. No hunting Sunday (wifes birthday).
Three days of bowhunting (tomorrow & next weekend) is all that is left for me......November 5 & 6 I will be on quail!

I saw 2 bucks this afternoon at about 4pm. I had only been on stand for 30 minutes. First one was a 4 pointer, he was followed up by a 6 pointer who i watched shred a small tree as he made his way towards me. They gave me perfect quartering away shots at 8 yards, but they were to small for my liking this early in the year. That 6 pointer I saw had some agression going on, wont be long till the bucks start breaking up and fighting, could be any day now.

I went out this morning and saw 1 doe, an 8, 6, and 4 pointer. At 705 the doe came out and was coming down a ravine when I mehed at her and missed!! I couldn't believe it. First time I'd ever missed with my bow. Figures, but oh well I guess. She was probably all of 70lbs anyway. It turns out she was about 35 yards away instead of what I thought was 25. I guess it looked shorter because of the slope..who knows. Either way it went right underneath her! I was ticked.
5 minutes later a really good looking 8 pointer came over the same ravine and this time came directly under my stand. At first glance I knew he was big, but didn't think he was big enough. Then when he came under my stand I got to thinking this is a pretty big deer. So, I stand up to take the shot. While I was getting up I moved my seat and made a noise. He didn't know where it came from, but he took off out to (really this time) 25 yards. I had it pulled and he was dead, but for some reason I never let it fly. I was 100% ready to let loose, but then all of a sudden I thought this deer just simply isn't old enough yet so I let down. Oh well, I was really second guessing myself after I let him trot off though! He's a really pretty 8 and perfectly symmetrical. I just wasn't ready to end my season yet on a marginal, for me, deer. He would have easily been my 2nd largest buck. I just couldn't do it.
At about 830 the 4 and the 6 came by with the 6 trailing the 4 by about 40 yards. The 4 came right by me, but I never did have a shot on the 6, but it wouldn't have mattered anyways.
A very good morning for me!

Yes, you had a great morning.
Patience is a virtue in bowhunting..
Now you just might get to the end of the season and wish you had that shot to do all over again, but you made your choice at the time.
I've found that if ever have to ask myself "do I or do I not want to shoot that deer" I am MUCH better off not shooting it.
Lot less regrets that way..Especially when one buck is the limit..
