Yesterday afternnoon I hung a stand close to some spoil banks overlooking a few white oaks that are dropping pretty good.
The ground is tore up with deer and turkey sign.
The wind was right for any deer coming out of the spoil banks so I went in to hunt it at 3:30.
At 5:00 a doe and a fawn came from the opposite direction with the wind in their butts.
The doe was smallish and the fawn even a LOT smaller. I passed her up.
About that time fawn looked back and here came a very nice large single doe. A shooter in my book.
Unfortunately for me she chose a little different path than the first two and went through some thick stuff. She finally popped out in an opening at 35 yards, but by then she had turned and was dead away. No shot there.
Only the first doe and fawn paid any attention to the acorns just picking up a couple on their way INTO the spoil banks.
The only reason I can see why they went into the spoil banks is for water. There is very little to no water from the way they came. There is a small pit two banks into the spoil banks.

Had a heavy buck come in too late tonight. Couldn't tell much about him except he was a "shooter" for sure ! Just too late and dark.

Saw a neat little buck this evening. Only about 12" width rack, but heavily palmated and nice length tines for a buck that small. A nine pointer. Looks like some serious trophy potential, if he makes it another year or two. Guessing he was a 1-1/2 year old.
Had a doe sneek by me. She was past any shooting lanes before I saw her. Been wanting to whack a doe.

I saw 12 points this morning...
No, not a 12 POINTER, 12 points in all.
2 forkies and two spikes.
The little bucks were moving..
Because of a northern wind for the last week I had not hunted this little whiteoak infested woodlot for over week until this morning.
The bucks were all the deer that I saw.
After getting down I looked around a bit and found several small and one rather large scrape. Most within shooting distance of the stand.
Not sure if I'll MZ hunt KY this weekend or go back to that woodlot with the crossbow..

This AM - I had the same three does go by me this morning that I saw a couple days ago. Small doe, fawn and a nice large doe..
Two out of the three was out of my self imposed range of 40 yards. One came by at 30 yards - guess which one? The fawn.
The momma and aunt stayed out to range.
Very nice hunting morning though..

Went this evening and saw some does and a basket 8. Got home and my buddy had called saying he had one down. By the time I arrived he had it in the back of his truck. It was a nontypical 12 pointer with 9' brow tine and others 10"+. He was unsure about taking a buck like this so early.....I wanted to beat him!!! I should tell you, to shed some light on his reluctance of harvesting a buck like this, he killed a 167" net 10 pointer on October 1 last year. Maybe I should borrow his lucky hunting hat, hmmmm.................. Hoosier.

I have been a bit remiss , but the "staring contest" I had with those two does the other day was just too much fun to pass up . The last time I stood still for that long was an incident involving a rather unfriendly large dog . Those does apparently reside next door because I keep seeing them , maybe they'll draw in a buck .

I saw 12 points and about 330 lbs as well Sunday morning. Plus another 100 lbs of turkey. Of course that translates into a 6-pointer, 4-pointer, a spike, and 9 hen turkeys.

Went Sunday morning and saw the big Zero. I had a few under my stand as I was making my way through in the dark, and boy did they give me the business!!
Sunday evening I saw 3 does and 2 very nice bucks that were still doin the bachelor thing. I shot at a doe, and totally blew it!!!!
Does anyone have a good pre shot routine that they would like to share with someone that still gets very excited when even does come within 20-30 yards? I can stand there and drill a target all day, but still struggle at the moment of truth. It is very frustrating to say the least.

Suitcase, that happens to all of us. Usually if i see a deer that i would like to take, i try not to think about it in my mind. If he is a buck, i wont even look at his head after i have decided i want to shoot him. All i think about it is what i need to do to make sure i get off a good shot. When the deer gets in range and you are ready to shoot, pick the spot you want to hit and only concentrate on that spot. Imgaine that piece of brown you are focusing on as the target in your back yard. This is what i do and it has helped me a lot, i used to have the same problem as you. Make sure you take deep breaths and try to relax as much as you can.

Suitcase- I believe time is the best medicine for overcoming buck fever. I can still remember like it was yesterday the first buck I ever drew on. I watched him make his way to me from the other side of the state. By the time he was within bow range, I was literally shaking so hard the the leaves attached to the branch which attached to the permanent stand I was wobbling in were shanking so violently that the buck actually stopped and starred in my direction with a puzzled look on his face. Of course that did not help the shakes at all. Once he put his head down, I attempted to draw the bow. I made it to full draw just in time to shake the arrow off of the rest, which made a neat little metalic noise has is hit the riser before leaping to my left arm. Again, the buck looks in my direction for what seemed like forever before looking away again. While still full drawn, I tilt my body to the right and lift my left arm until the arrow finally finds its way back to its original rest. by now, I'm not sure if my shakes are due to the fever or to the length of time the bow has been at full draw. Needless to say, I release the first missle which went over his back. Can you believe that I managed to shoot two more arrows at that buck before he tired of my feeble attempts and walked off. After leaving he left, I looked at where he had stood so patiently just minutes before and it resembled an sacred indian burial ground with all the arrows and fletchings sticking out of the ground. Hang in there.....it will get better, but until it does...ENJOY THE RUSH!!!!!

As some of you know I considered giving up bowhunting because of so much shoulder pain. Decided to give it a try this year and do very little practicing. I would only shoot 4 to 12 arrows at a time and was holding everything in the 4 or 5 ring and not irritating the shoulders. Been seeing lots of deer but most of my good shots were at fawns or small bucks. This morning I had only seen one deer way out of range till 9:00. Then I saw some deer running like they were being chased, probably by a small buck. A doe walked by at 30 yards but with the limited practice I knew I would not shoot beyond 20. After feeding a while she came walking back toward me while looking back to where she had run from. She finally came in to 20 yards broadside and I was able to put one through both lungs. She went 50 to 60 yards and I heard her fall but still waited 25 minutes before getting down. NOT AS GOOD AS I ONCE WAS BUT AS GOOD ONCE AS I EVER WAS.
