Hey Guy's:
Just checking in with everyone and my team mates. Weather here for the past three weeks straight is Rain, Rain, and Rain! This week they are calling for Rain! Anyways I'm seeing some Deer, only in the early evenings up here, a few nice Bucks, Ton's of Turkeys! They are Starting to scrape a bit ( Bucks) , Doe's are looking really nice. I've gone out a few times in the Huricane wind and rain but only had one chance at a 6 Point Buck. Decided to let him go because I couldn't see a proper Bead on him and didn't want to risk a bad shot. Anyways, Hope to report better on here soon. See Ya!

Good evening to hunt yesterday.
Unfortunately for me the deer didn't agree. Saw nada. Not even a squirrel.
Meanwhile in Warrick county Woodmaster saw four and a borderline shooter came within 20 yards. Since he will be off 3 weeks the beginning of November to hunt hard he passed him up..

Out this evening even with the wind and rain. Saw two decent bucks at about 5 pm. Saw them coming off of another property onto the property I hunt. One was a decent 8 point that would probably score about 100. The other was a real nice 10 point whose rack came out past his ears real well (definitely a borderline P&Y). Had them both at 25 yards and could have taken a shot at either. However, the 10 point wasn't as big as what I shot last year and we have a standing rule of any buck that you shoot must be mounted. Didn't feel like spending $500 on him, so I passed. What's nice is that I'm now starting to see bigger bucks moving earlier. They're not rutting yet but it won't be soon!

Tonight I finished my last ground blind for gun season and went into an area about 1/2 mile away that I haven't scouted since the summer. The deer sign was heavy and I actually entered a creekbottom down wind of a decent buck. I was in jeans and a sweatshirt and had no intentions on hunting or anything. I sat down on the ground and watched him rub 6 trees and lick a few branches. He was walking right towards me and came up behind an oak that was 5 feet in front of me. He came from behind the tree and would have stepped on me, but I said "boo." He ran about 15 yards and snorted a few times and just stood there. Another unseen deer snorted louder and they both tore off through the woods. I think he was making a scrape in the bottom because his antlers were on the ground for several minutes beneath one of the licking branches. Is he huntable, say next weekend? Will he check his area that he worked up in that creek bottom? He was a nice 6 pointer a little beyond his ears with a swollen neck and a good sized body. I would be delighted to take him if I can get a decent setup in that area.

I'd say that this is his area and he will be back.
If not him, maybe his big briother?
Good luck on him or his big brother.

I hunted Vanderburgh county yesterday evening. Since Vanderburgh is an UDZ I can take a buck or a doe there.
The big white oak that I had hunted before had absolutely no acorns on it or the ground.
I had moved my stand about 100 yards due east and setup in a half-arse clearing. This area had been logged out about 5 or 6 years ago. I was overlooking a small creek that ran by the bottom of the very small hill I am on.
I have about a 25 yard shot down towards the creek in one spot. A 30 yard shot in one spot due east and a 10 yard shot due south .
Behind me is a “I get to watch him walk” area – as it is a no shot at all.
It was quite windy when I got settled in my stand at 3:30CST. About an hour before dark the wind settled down pretty decent and by dark it was almost still.
When the wind did settle I noticed a little bit of movement down by the creek about 75 yards away. In fact in the creek bed itself. I could make out a deer. Nice bodied too, so my hopes were up on a buck. I watched that area intently and all of a sudden a tree started moving back and forth,. He is rubbing – it is a buck for sure.
I pulled out my Primos can and Wabi grunt tube and did a couple of quick turns on the can and followed by a couple of grunts. The buck’s head popped up a little and I could see two distinct tines above the bushes that looked impressive. Nice and long, but rather spindly.
He started moving my way.
I clicked on the green dot on my scope to get ready. The more he approached the more I thought “What the heck”? . When he finally got to where I could see him good he was a very tall and narrow 6 pointer. I’m talking inside the ears and at least 16 or 18 inches tall. The ”tines” that I saw when he was in the ditch was the whole straight upright rack - both the beam and the tines..
What I thought by seeing him at a distance and just the top portion of the rack that he was a shooter turned into a disappointment.
This buck had to be a 2 ½ year old deer by looking at his body.
I wish I had thought about my camera in my pack and tried to get a picture of him,. Pretty unique looking rack.
He meandered up to about 15 yards looking form the doe/buck that had wahhed and grunted. He stood there for about 5 minutes looking all over. I guess he thought that the deer he heard must have left so he went to go looking for them. He passed by my stand at 10 yards offering a great broadside shot.
Pass..
It will be interesting to see what that rack will be in a few years.

Had a decision to make last week. Went to take a doe at 10 yards and could not draw the bow....Time for a change so did a lot a thinking and looking and had my mind made up to go with the crossbow. Went to The Great Outdoors in Jasper since they are a Tenpoint dealer to see what they had. All they had were Barnetts in stock and would have to order Tenpoints. Decided to try a newer (All bows are newer than mine) bow with lots of breakover. Hey I can do this. Never shot a release before so the guy there worked with me and set up a bow with TruGlo lighted sight and a release and in no time I was hitting the 5 rings. Only problem is I flinch once in a while,( didn't do that with fingers) and send one into no mans land. Hey this is getting me another year or ten with a pull bow. Thought this morning would be a good morning to break it in so sat in my favorite stand till 11:00 and only saw I squirrel. Did get in on a pileated woodpecker convention though, never saw so many. Try again this evening...

I went in to hunt my litle patch of woods in Vanderburgh county yesterday evening. To my surprise a buck had rubbed a pretty good sized cedar tree that was within 12 yards of my stand. This was recent as I had been in there two evenings before and it wasn't there then.. Fresh droppings were on the same run. I felt pretty good about that, BUT never saw a deer. Four trips there and one buck spotted - no does. It is a small wood patch so I am not expecting to see deer running out of the yazoo. I cant hunt today but will hit it hard from here on in. Maybe the tree rubber will be back in good light. .

Found a nice freash line of 2'-3' diameter hanging branch scrapes yesterday afternoon along an old ridge top logging road. Jumped a nice 7 pointer just downwind of the scrapes.

The lack of acorns is hurting me. I am hunting a corner of the woods which is surrounded by thicket. Normally the deer come through the thicket and feed on the acorns in the edge of the woods. This year they are staying in the thicket and giving no shots at all. Going to leave this place alone till gun opener.

I saw a few young bucks harassing does, but the big bucks aren't cranked up yet.
It shouldn't be long though.

I decided to go out again lastnight. This time I switched areas because I wasn't seeing alot of buck movement at my old spot.I went to my other hot spot, and man,it was like walking in buck wonderland. They had the place tore up,scrapes and rubs everywhere. The area is made up of several ridges that branches off and that funnel down into some crop bottoms.I rattled up a couple bucks but nothing big enough to shoot.I started around 5:30pm,I just finished up the second set of grunts and rattles and I swear it was less than a minute this little 8 point with a 10"spread came running in over the ridge to my right,he came with in 15 yards of me and spent atleast 10 mins stiffing around.I put out some of the cheap doe estrus scent that Knight and Hale has out,and he went crazy over it,I wasn't for sure it would work since it was cheap($4 someting for 2oz at Wal-Mart)I had fun playing with him,he never knew i was there..I think he was in love or something. The second buck was just a little four pointer..looking at some of the tracks in the scrapes and the size of the rubs, these guys didn't make them.A few of the rubs was on 10-12" diameter trees and the tracks were almost as big as my hands...I feel alot better now knowing I am on some big bucks..

I hunted within 50 yards of a bean field in Vanderburgh county.
I could see it pretty well now that the leaves are off.
I saw a total of 8 does and fawns and NO BUCKS.
Not sure what is going on there as one of those does should be getting close to estrus.
Do you call this deer hunting weather- the forecast for tomorrow is..
[glow=red,2,300]72°/55°[/glow]
Break out the camo shorts..
