Had three does come by at 9:30 and then five minutes later had three more followed by a basket rack buck. Finally starting to get fun out there.

10/14/2006 - Morning Hunt I returned to my opening day stand and saw no deer. I counted about 1 dozen squirrels though! Around 9:30am I went and scouted a bottom that is notorious for deer movement, especially in the late season. I found multiple criss-crossing, heavily worn deer trials, in a funneling creek bottom. I set up a ground gun hunt setup and cleared all possible shooting lanes. I will return there in gun season. Too much wind for the deer to move well this morning!

I thought I would give the turkey birds a go for awhile. I sat up on the field where Woodmaster and myself had tagged out during the Spring season. I went out about noon and was in a pop up blind with two hen decoys out. I called sparringly about every 15 minutes or so. No birds.I did have a doe and a fawn come out and stopped in the field and stared a hole through the decoys. The doe would bob her head and was real stiff legged. She moved around and started to circle the decoys, never taking her eyes off of them. Each half circle brought her closer and closer. She finally got within about 25 yards when the wind spun on of the decoys real quick and it all of a sudden was facing her. She did a 180 and blew out of there with the fawn in hot pursuit. I swear I heard her say as she ran off, " Run, Bambi, Run! That thing wants to eat us!"I pulled out of there about 2:30 and went to Vanderburgh county to deer hunt. There I saw two coons and no deer. One coon went up a tree 10 feet from me and stared at me, even though I was fully camoed. I thought," Did BSUTravis send these bad boys down here?" He was just curious and never hissed of anything. Now how can anyone think these things can be mean. Cute little rascal. I'm sure he would make a wonderful pet. .

Oct 14, decided to hit the woods for a evening hunt. Iam hunting public land (mississawena)sp, and have hunted it now the same area for 5 years the word must be out, because there were more hunters there tonight then i've ever seen, This area has always produce some nice bucks in the past, But tonight i saw all does, the first set of 3 were spooked and found out later had been shot at by another hunter and then i saw 2 does commng out of the corn and past my stand at 5:40pm could of shot either of them but passed and watched them strolling through the woods feeding on acorns, iI have two weeks of vacation last week of Oct and 1st two weeks of November so i have time just wanted to see how they were moving and probably from the looks of things my have to hunt through the week, i saw more stands in this area then GanderMountain has in stock? I dont gun hunt this area because of the Orange Army! I think this cold weather has got them up and moving so things should look good in a couple of weeks.

Had a healthy 1-1/2 year old 6 pointer broadside @ 15 yards Sunday morning @ 9:30 am. He responded to my soft bleating as he strolled up looking around for the source. I drew on him just for the fun of it. He did not have a clue I was there.

Haven't had much comp time lately, been hunting! Things are already heating up in the HNF.
Oct. 14: Didn't get down to the woods until noon, got out to my favorite spot and up the tree by 3:00. nothing to see but squirrels until sunset, when I spotted a 1 1/2 yr old deer about 40 yds. to my right, which came up behind me. I caught a glimpse of another smallish deer farther away also. Got ready to shoot, and was trying to determine if the deer browsing my way was a slick, or a spike. Hard to tell through the brush, in the dim light sometimes. I finally spied his little spikes, and relaxed. No shooting this one!. Just then, I heard a crashing coming from the little pine patch That used to be the loading area from the old logging operation. (This spot has always attracted deer) Squirrels scrambled up trees everywhere, the little spike lowered his head, and I swear I saw his knees shaking. Out of the pine thicket he ran. One very large, mature buck! 3 1/2 yrs. old at least. I couldn't tell for sure as to how many points, but he was high, and very, very wide, with really good mass! At one point, I could see 4 tines on one side, not counting his brow tines. I judged him to be a 140 class buck. A shooter for sure! He shook his head at the little buck a few times, and started looking around. He locked on me in my 20 foot high perch, and I thought I was made. I froze, avoided eye contact, and after a couple minutes of burning a hole through me with his laser eyes, he decided I was nothing to worry about. Gotta love that camo! At 35 yards, I tried desperately to move my body without drawing attention. I got into position in case he stepped from behind the brush and offered a shot. Alas, my luck wasn't that good today. He jerked his head to attention as the coyotes started howling a few hundred yards away, and sauntered on down the draw like he owned the woods. I was fortunate not to have spooked him, as I know he'll be back around again. Anyway, I've found my shooter for the year, now I just have to seal the deal.
Oct. 15: Up at 5:00, coffee, up the tree before first light. Started seeing deer as soon as the sun rose. Three different groups of does of three each. No wonder that big buck was hanging around here. Saw a total of 11 deer by noon. It's getting interesting already. The deer seem to be getting into their breeding attitude a little earlier than normal this year. Must be the cool weather. Found 2 scrapes on my way out, and I usually never see that down here until the last weekend of Oct.

Got to my stand yesterday and got set up and settled in, while looking the area over I noticed something in the warm season grass next to my wetlands area. It appeared to be an antler sticking out of the grass. My first thought was "great EHD got one of my bucks". I got my binocs out and looked at it and it was a 130" 8 pointer. But it was alive and well and was just bedded there and he was less then 40 yards from my stand. I watched him until dark and he did nothing more then move his head side to side. He was still there when I got down and left. I had no interest in shooting him but it was cool.

Good story rmc.
You're very good to get in a stand 40 yards from a buck and he doesn't see or hear you.
I usually try and stalk my stand walking as quietly as possible to get to it. As much as I can I try and keep the wind right on the approach.

I wanted to try and arrow a turkey so I hunted Warrick county yesterday evening. No turkeys, just deer and a couple of squirrels. On the walk out I flushed 3 or 4 turkeys from a big oak about 125 yards from my stand. The suckers don't play fair. .

I was in Parke county this morning and saw lots of wildlife. I saw squirrels, hawks, wood ducks, great blue herons, and finally 3 deer. We saw each other at 60 yards and they had other plans, besides coming any closer to me. Great morning to be in the woods. I will be heading south tomorrow for another hunt..

I don't like wind and I don't think the deer did either.
They were smarter than me and stayed holed up.
Stupid me, I was out playing Tarzan swinging in a tree.

Walked upon a 6 pointer making a scrape saturday morning @ 6:00am going to my stand. He just slowly trotted off when he saw me rounding the corner in the logging road. It was an advertising scrape by a poke plant, as there were no overhanging branches above the scrape.

We have chosen to stay out of our woods as much as possible and allow the hunters in the adjacent properties to move their deer into our sanctuary. 168 acres is not the largest are to maintain but we do a good job of it. We know the woods very well and our stand positions will change very little. An abundance of "good' climber trees makes this easier. I was able to get out on Sunday, 10/14 and while it was a bit early for the chase I did see three nice does and my partner saw two does and one lone six pointer. Will ad to the info as my season progresses.
