Oct 1 5:00 AM. Clear, cool & damp, lower 50's with no wind. As we had our coffee in deer camp, two groups of coyotes separated by a mile of ridgetops sounded off to each other in the starlight. The 3/4 mile walk to my hunting area would have been made almost silent due to the showers the night before, but the plethora of acorns on the trail, made me sound like a bag of popcorn in the microwave! Up the tree in my climber and ready to shoot at first light. At sunup, with no breeze, the thermals were working perfectly for me in my perch at the head of a draw. I was expecting to hear turkeys, but no sign of them today. It seems every tree in the woods was dropping nuts. Great! That'll keep 'em up out of the bottoms, and up to me. The squirrels were so thick, I could have easily limited out without leaving my stand, if I had a .22 rifle.
10:00 AM Noticed a flicker of movement to my right, and spotted a fawn through the young pines. Watched a total of 5 slicks, two full-grown does and three younger ones, traveling west to east. Not stopping to eat at all, but in no hurry. A 35 yard shot through some brush was the best I had, so I elected to let them pass, and made a mental note to move my stand 50 yards to the north next weekend. Nothing the rest of the day except squirrels everywhere I looked.

Saw my first big buck of the year last night 10/4/05. Saw him right before dark. To thick to get and didn't get a good look at his rack but he was big bodied. Slept in today 10/5/06 and went behind my house at 10am. Had to small basket racks come in at 11am. One was 8pt and the other was a 6. Let them walk. hw

Thursday October 5 WEnt out with Dad this morning and had some fun. Frustrated right off the start as we spooked three deer on the way out. The spot we where hunting is very hard to get in to. Have to cross a large field to get to the bush or walk in the whole length (about 3/4 mile) just get to the edge of the bush turn on light just for a minute to find trail and see 3 sets of eyes and a huge rack no more than 30 yards away. One great big blow from hte buck and off they go. Man did that buck ever stink two more steps towards where they where and all I could smell was tarsel gland. After that we got into our stands without much confidence but stayed anyway. Around 8:30 heard a buck grunting to my left, never saw him but saw a lone doe, another doe with twin fawns. Hard to believe but I passed on the does hoping to see the buck he never did show. Oh well. Have to work this weekend then off to the cottage with Dad to hunt grouse for a couple of days. No more deer hunting till next week. Good luck everyone.

bigugly,
Sounds like you had a great morning even if you didn't connect.
The boys must be starting to rut up there.
This could very well be your year for a buck.

The mostly North wind kept me from hunting where I really wanted to hunt this evening so I went to a stand that the wind didn't matter as deer can come from any direction.
At 5:15 CST I had a nice plump doe and fawn come by me.
Unfortunately for me and fortunately for her she came in when the wind was blowing and I never heard her until she was past my right shooting lane.
They then browsed on some black oak acorns about 45 yards away. Too far and too thick to shoot.
White and red oak acorns are almost non-existant. Anyone else seeing any white or red oak acorns?
There is lots of turkey scratching about 100 yards south of this stand.

10 / 7 Had two deer come thru before sunup. I could just make out bodies in the short dark period as the full moon went dull & before the sun was up. 11:30 am, coyotes bumped a 6 pointer buck from his bed as he flew by in high gear.

Just before dark last night I saw 3 does foraging thru a picked cornfield. It was windy, rainy, & temps dropping quickly as the cold front was moving in.

You guys are tough.
That weather would have got me to stay home this early in the season.

You guys are tough. That weather would have got me to stay home this early in the season. . I was going to get out this morning, but had to stop by a vendor an pick up some material. Was still going to try and slide in the stand for a bit, but the wind and all the corn still up made me decided to keep a "hunting work morning" for later this month!
