This stand seems to be a bust this year, even though I saw a lone buck pass through here on opening morning. Last year I had anywhere from 3-16 deer around me on every morning sit. I know that the deer are still around, so I'm not worried that "the DNR killed them all off." Lol!
Let's look at the changes since last year:
1. Bean field 500 yards or so to the east is standing corn this year.
2. The countless huge oaks in this woodlot produced very few acorns this year.
3. Cattle are normally on this farm, and the farm hands drive through the bottoms below this woodlot each morning to feed, honking their horn as they go. Perhaps this pushed the deer up higher on the ridge where I'm at. The cattle were moved off this farm prior to season due to logging schedule.
4. Logging operations started on this farm on September 25, but they are starting on the other side of the 350 acres first. I'm not even sure if they've done more than mark trees as of now, and I see no reason for it to affect deer on this side of the farm -- nothing is painted over here yet.

My question is this: 7.5" barreled AR15 in .300 Blackout, pistol configuration. Is THAT legal for public land? Yes, as it IS a pistol.

The DNR seems to think that it does. I, myself, feel that if two laws contradict one another, then side with what was intented.

HEA1415 took effect AFTER the hunting regs were printed. It wasn't the Legislature's intention to ban PCR's from public land, but it happened. Multiple DNR Facebook pages have already confirmed it.

I think the deer actually walked by woody while he was on the porch. I am getting ready to hit the woods. Hoping for a turkey. If you don't score, there was a fat doe lying on the highway shoulder less than a quarter mile west of your road yesterday afternoon. Lol!

Sitting here in the same stand as opening morning, waiting for legal shooting light.

www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/7389.htmIt's true. Click "Equipment", then read the second question under that section. The new HPR law accidentally prohibited PCR's on public land.

Congratulations! I've never shot a recurve or longbow, but I bet that it is quite difficult!

Five more passed by a little farther behind some leaves, and at least one had a long beard. Then I saw two more coming right towards me through the woods, but they turned and ran as soon as I lifted a finger -- and they were 50+ yards in cover. Eagle eyes! Lol! I guess I should stick with deer today.

Just had 8 big, fat turkeys pass me single file at 20 yards. As luck would have it, they were all hens and I'm really only interested in a tom.

I'm back in the same woodlot that I was in this morning, but brought my climber and moved over to where the buck came through. Hopefully he'll reverse his travel and I'll be able to measure him up tonight. He paused under a huge white oak this morning that has a few acorns under it, and I'm now 20 yards from it.
The only decent tree is pretty bare, but I am set up on the opposite side of it from where I think he'll come (if he shows up.)

Slow motion since seeing 2 doe's this morning. Already got a 20/30 min nap in the blind. Already ate my 2 pb&j sammiches so I'll sit as long as I can and see what the rest of the day brings. Dang, Wes, you're pretty hardcore to do an all-day sit on October 1! I left the woods this morning at 10:30 AM and will probably go back out at 4:30 PM.

Just had what I think was a decent buck pass by at 49 yards. From what I could see through the greenery, he looked like a mainframe 10-pointer with a kicker off the left side G2.
Had a big tom turkey at 22 yards earlier, but he must have seen me trying to stand even through all leaves and started putting and circled back from whence he'd came.

In my tree. I should have worn waders, as I had to walk hundreds of yards through waist high, dew-soaked grass. Lol! Right before I got to my tree, something let out a horrible "scream". It started of sounding like a siren. I think it was some sort of bird.
I forgot my seat cushion for the hang-on stand, as well as a bow hanger.

I'm torn between holding out for the monster buck I'm after and getting some meat in the freezer. This time of year, I only think about doe hunting. A buck is just a tiny glimmer in the dark recesses of my mind. Sure, if a big buck happens to walk by in October, I'll do my best to get it, but I don't really give them much thought until Halloween.

Well, employees there can now hunt the entire archery season whereas they used to be limited to Sundays only, which was when the public archery draw hunts were held. I guess it's become a private, 100-square mile archery bonanza for employees. I have heard said that deer numbers are down somewhat as well -- certainly not from overharvesting of does. Lol!

Well, my season is going to be interesting, to say the least. I received an e-mail today from the landowner of the largest farm I hunt informing me that logging will commence in 2-3 weeks. Lol! It was scheduled for years ago, but some sort of lawsuit involving the logger has kept it postponed until now.
I've seen deer walking around on a much smaller property while loggers were felling trees a mere hundred yards away, so I'm not extremely concerned about that aspect. It's more about how open the woods are going to be in the future, as well as how bad the briars are going to become.

Did you happen to notice the time stamp? I'm curious to see how that changes closer to season and once the area starts seeing some pressure. Once he sheds his velvet, he'll more than likely switch to moving right after daylight and right before dark, at least until the rut. Where I hunt, the deer shed velvet and move an average of a mile from the camera. Lol! I got video of the same buck for three years with a camera on the same tree each year. By mid-September, I never got another photo of him there until the next summer. The two times I saw him during season were 1.1 and 1.5 miles from the camera. Both times were the first week of October. The first time, I let him walk. The next year, I killed him. Maybe you'll have one that sticks around the area. Good luck, and I hope you get him.

I see no problems whatsoever. Put the new upper on the lower, push two pins in, and you are ready to go. 6.8 SPC is also another deer-legal caliber that will fit on a standard AR-15 lower receiver.Good luck!
