Wondering why there haven't been any public hunts at Crane the past couple of seasons? Wonder if they will ever have them again.

10point, very good question! Crane is one of my favorite places to get drawn and hunt! Some magical moments in the deer woods have taken place at Crane over the years! Wish one one day we could get back in there and public draw hunt! Awesome place!

Probably just letting the population recover.

Wondering why there haven't been any public hunts at Crane the past couple of seasons? Wonder if they will ever have them again. There is still a handicap hunt. My opinion is that it's two pronged... Active duty military assigned to Crane for 179 days, military retirees that were assigned to Crane, .gov employees assigned to NSA Crane, DoD contractors assigned to NSA Crane, .gov retirees that retired from Crane, are enough hunters to control the population. There is a lot of risk that the CO undertakes when allowing the general population on his installation to hunt.

To many hopes to jump and when it's cancelled to Many crying because of no refund!
Plus there maybe few things that people shouldn't see there!

Well, employees there can now hunt the entire archery season whereas they used to be limited to Sundays only, which was when the public archery draw hunts were held. I guess it's become a private, 100-square mile archery bonanza for employees. I have heard said that deer numbers are down somewhat as well -- certainly not from overharvesting of does. Lol!

Too easy to say no. When I worked at Newport it was a great limited access hunt club! That was only 7000 acres! 64000 acres with ducks and fishing is a great incentive to be a goobermint guy! Right lawrencecohunter?

Right lawrencecohunter? It is a perk. I do plenty of hunting there but have yet to do any killing. Maybe this year. As far as density, I see way more deer off base than on. Really aren't that many deer around. Age class structure is good though, lots of deer dying of old age in there. As far as the public hunts go, it is really 100% up to the commanding officer. The biologist can make recommendations, but that's it. My guess is that the lower deer numbers, as evidenced by a significant decrease in car/deer collisions, combined with the liability of hosting the general public are the primary factors for not holding the hunt. As deer populations on base fluctuate and COs come and go, who knows if more public hunts will be hosted in the future.

We have heard for years about the heavy bobcat population, plus Crane was the last place that cougar was tracked several years ago. Maybe he found that female that got loose from the big cat sanctuary that same year and they set up shop. No reason to eradicated the does in there to lower the numbers when the big cats can kill 2 or 3 a week each. ;-)

My brother was on the police force there for quite a while (no longer) and he is not a hunter but did love fishing there. He said he would always see a decent number of deer but nothing to write home about number wise but plenty of BIG bucks he'd see. He said the thing they'd see the most were coyotes...I cannot tell you how many of those things he killed over the years.

Had a customer today that worked at Crane and said word for word exactly what you did. Few deer but lots of old timers. Told me he'd rather hunt Big Oaks any day.

Few deer...I was out collecting storm water samples one night. Had to go from West Gate (crane gate) to Bloomington Gate on my way home. I counted over 100 deer along that stretch of road that night. That was after seeing enough to start counting. About a 7 mile drive if I remember correctly. The next 20 miles home, off base, was less than 20.
I worked on base as a contractor for 3 yrs, 2009 to 2012. I saw lots o deer.

I think one time I sat all day and saw 8 deer. Usually it's more like 2-3 per sit.
