Yes in a single shot rifle. Make mine a S&W .460 Mag in a Ruger or Browning falling block.

I have rattled my brains out and never rattled up a buck.

I really believe that if you want to kill a trophy buck in Indiana then the bowhunters have the edge because the absolute best time is the last week of Oct and the first week of Nov. when the bucks are in the seeking phase of the rut. I would gladly give up the rut hunt with a gun and take those two weeks to gun hunt.

There are many hunters because of job, family and other demands simply do not have the time to invest to hunt down a particular buck. Hunting during the rut gives them a chance to bag a respectable animal. Lets get down to tacks if deer hunting was easy everybody would hunt and everybody would have a trophy buck on the wall. Also I am sure that more deer are wounded and lost during gun season than archery season. There are a lot more gun hunters out there. I also know from friends that bowhunt that a fair number of deer are lost with archery tackle as well. Either from a bad hit, or not being able to track/recover the animal. When they told me how many deer that they had shot and lost I was shocked. Their percentage had to be much higher than with a gun. I personally have found 3 nice bucks that were shot by archery hunters and never recovered. I believe that every hunter should have to pass a test of their shooting skills before being issued a license. Also Indiana should make every hunter choose one weapon to hunt with and use for the whole season. I would like to see gun hunters restricted to using a single shot gun for deer hunting. I believe this would cut down on the "hope" shots. I would like to see the number of hunters conducting a deer drive restricted to two for safety reasons. I believe the deer herd in Indiana should be managed so that the most hunters can get an opportunity to harvest a deer. It should not be managed for the trophy hunters.

My son used to keep track of the number of deer I killed and he would say "Dad I am getting close to catching up with you" I happened to shoot 4 deer the next season and he quit counting. I have never made deer hunting a numbers game. I don't believe that a large "score" makes one a better deer hunter than another. One of the best I know doesn't shoot many deer even though he could. He is just real selective in the deer he does shoot. If my family has not put many in the freezer, I shoot a few more to help out. Otherwise I'm going to shoot a nice young fat deer for myself and then hunt a wall hanger. I don't really know how many I have shot. More than 30 and Less than 50? would be my best guess. I remember the misses and the blown opportunities and the times when I did it just right and the lucky ones I got in spite of myself. That's what makes deer hunting the addiction that it is.

I was out Sunday and had no luck but have an Atterbury draw and a chance to go a second time with a friend. I have had good success there. Hope to get things started soon with the crossbow.Maybe this weekend. Never fear we will get on the board when the gun season comes in. Have a three day hunt in Wisconsin and the annual muzzleloader excursion to southern INdiana so the best is yet to come. The main thing is to have fun and enjoy the time outdoors. Schoolmaster.

When I was a young kid my grandfather would come back from Wyoming every year and tell us the stories of the hunts he had out there. Indiana didn't even have a season then.

Tye, not a problem, hunt when you can and just enjoy it. HH and I just like to josh each other a little. I suggest we call ourselves "The Deep Thicket Deer Slayers" Tell me if you like it. If I get the deer draws this year I should be able to put up a few "points" on the board. I have a 3 day hunt scheduled in Wisconsin on their gun opener and a brand new stand is already up with shooting lanes cut for 80 yards in a tamarack thicket. I have trail cam pictures of a nontypical on my father in laws farm that will run into 15 to 20 points easy. I intend to hunt hard this year as I have 4 families that want venison. Heck, my daughter's family ate a whole deer in a week last season. There are 7 of them to feed. I have seen a lot of deer so am looking forward to getting out there. It won't be long now.

HH, well Woody will have to carry you that's for sure. You have forgotten that I have my new bionic super stealth knees now and I will take unfair advantage of you. Also I am taking a trip up to Wisconsin during their gunopener and they can party hunt there. I have a Rem semiauto 30-06 and 5 boxes of shells in a target rich environment so the kill numbers will esculate as the herds pass by. I was at the farm yesterday and that mongo 14 pointer is still there a B&C buck for sure. So how do you like them apples! Gundude I wish you the best as I have one goal in this contest and it is to put a whuppin on the Horn Harvesters. HH second place is good enough for me if you are in third.

Tye, we need a buttkicking name. I don't care much about the rest of the teams but I really want to put a whuppin on the Horn Harvesters. I don't know how HH got Woody for a partner but I know we will have to bring our game up to another level if we are to prevail. OK HH the gauntlet has been cast. I know you have been in training getting ready for this season and I can assure you I will be out there even if I have to crawl. I just found a new hot spot that is absolutely loaded with deer so I feel very confident. GET READY FOR YOUR WHUPPING! The Schoolmaster.

Hoy many rattle, grunt, bleat to attract deer? How effective is it? I have a friend who has done one of these techniques several times with success. However I have rattled my brains out and have had no luck. What procedure do you use to get the deer to respond? I have watched the videos and they make it look easy. The deer I hunt are not that stupid! Any one have any suggestions as I would like to add calling deer to my bag of tricks.

HH, I may not shoot as good as you but I am still minute of deer out to 200 yards. I have the hunter's ed card and always attach a copy of my lifetime license and hunters ed card on the appropriate place. I have already sent in my application for this year.

I have sent in my application to hunt a state park every year and haven't been drawn since 2001. How does the IDNR conduct the draw? Also if I am doing something wrong filling out the application how do I find out?

I agree that the manufacturers will not produce rifled barrels and saboted slugs for the 410 there is just not enough demand for it. This is one reason the 20 ga. is lagging so far behind the 12. A presenter at a slug shooting seminar told me the 20 ga. represents only 12 % of the market.

The 410 slug is the problem. If you could get a 410 projectile that was aerodynamic and had maybe a plastic tip to expand the slug it would work better. Perhaps a .357 pistol bullet in a sabot out of a rifled barrel like a muzzleloader.
