Had a nice rutcation despite the bad weather, getting the itch to get back out. My chest injury has been healed for a while so I think I'll take some time tomorrow to shoot the vertical bow. It's much easier to still hunt with.
I've always struggled to find deer after gun season at my local spot, this year since I didnt burn myself out early, I plan to put more miles in to finally figure that out.
Deer don't go out into fields till after dark and the entire property is a giant food source, normal rules don't apply.

State Parks are not managed to make deer hunter's lives easy. Deer hunters are a tool State Parks use to help manage the flora within the park. Now if they just has as efficient and effective system to control the invasive flora within the Parks. They do. But they let us shoot them every year. Lol

I drew a blank on all reserved hunts this year. Even though I killed one of my biggest bucks ever at Turkey Run, Shades is my favorite. Deer in there are FAR FROM overpopulated. People who say "State Park hunts are like shooting tame deer" CLEARLY have not hunted a park lately. I got buck fever and missed a 120" 10 pointer at harmonie a few years ago. Clearly he avoided hunters there for a few years.

JackRyan, that's a name I haven't heard in awhile.
The man behind the screen name is a much better in person.

My son and I spent the last 2 days at the Versailles Park reduction hunt. Neither one of us saw any deer. Very little gun fire as well. State has way over hunted parks IMO. Once every 3 or 4 years is plenty. Agreed. I'm sure there are experts making these decisions that know more than I do, but the underbrush at Lincoln was so thick, I just don't believe they truly need a reduction hunt. We didn't go. You might as well bowhunt cause you're not shooting more than 30 yards.

I rarely hunt the same spot twice, by this I mean that I may move 20 yards away from where I last hunted. Something as simple as that can turn a season around. This is a little more difficult from a blind, some deer become very tuned in to changes.
I would ditch the blind and sit against a tree for a while.

Yep. Back around 2013 I had really bad lower back pain. I had wrongly assumed that it was from sitting g in the cab of an ambulance for 12 hours a day or a lifting injury.
It was around this time my wife and I moved in together and we tossed my mattress and used hers.
On a whim we got a memory foam topper and almost instantly I began to feel better. We've since bought a memory foam mattress and though I still have pain after long stretches at work, despite having a memory foam topper for the bed there, I'm mostly pain free.
I'm probably due to buy a new topper there as it's been 3 years with that one.

I tell ya what this hunting stuff will take a toll on you. Today was day five in a row of hunting and I was up at 2:30 to make it to the park in time. I’m absolutely wore out. No way I can do another 2:30 morning tomorrow. It’s been fun though. Just tell myself the entire time, it just takes one. Prolly just go behind the house in the morning for my first gun hunt back there. WaIt till you hit the 80s! 😉 My hunting buddies grandpa just killed a 130"+ yesterday and he's 90. Edit to change dad to grandpa. We're not that old.

No. Looks like things fired up after that front yesterday. At least in the south.

As I stated elsewhere, (probably this thread) I was unhappy with the performance of soft points. Specifically federal powershocks. So this year I hand loaded the Hornady 165gr FTX into some virgin starline brass. I used Lil gun powder but I don't know the measurement off hand. I believe these are traveling around 2200fps, so a little slower than factory. I recovered this one between the hide and muscle just above the brisket. Deer was shot at 15 yards, quartering away. He was probably quartering a little harder than I thought because the bullet broke 8 ribs and decimated the left lung. It retained 91% of its original weight. I forgot to measure its current width.

I'm drawn for Lincoln tomorrow and Tuesday but I'm not going. So thick in there you might as well bow hunt.

We only took 1 out of orange county. Only heard about 10 shots this morning. Plenty moving when we left. Bet ya I know a field a bunch of them are bedded in. May give it a go for a couple hours tomorrow just to say I did then time to load the dog box in the truck for the year Honestly, we've had so much luck in the past where we were, we haven't ventured to any other areas of HNF. We keep meaning to scout around every year and never do.

Of course, the rain pushed through faster than I thought and now we see deer everywhere on the drive out.

Grandson killed a fork horn right before the rain hit us. We are happy! LRB Processing is full. 😳 Taking him to Bucks and jakes to their cooler until LRB catches up. Thanks for posting that LRB is full. Figured they might be. I'll drop off at kolleys on the way home.

That's likely all she wrote for me. Might get out a couple more times for archery or muzzy. I don't have anywhere to shoot does with a firearm unless I find time to drive back up.
Supposed to rain all day along with the winds so we're packing up camp and heading home.

Hoping for at least 1 doe tomorrow.
