So I've read and heard some of the back and forth regarding the size and nature of the "no man's land" area above the vitals. I've seen the YouTube video referenced on the Hunting Public with the deer's inflated lungs, etc.
Found this today while going through my trail cam pics...

That's above the spine.

I shot deer there before. It'll make you sick tracking and tracking and tracking. But, when they show back up on camera, you get just a tad bit if relief in knowing he/she didn't go to waste. But, the feeling of wounding one still lingers.

Deer can live on 1 lung and deer are extremely tuff critters. Sometimes just no explanation on how they survive. Science says no such thing as " no man's land". IDK and hope to never have to find out.

I believe their to be a “no mans land”. Unfortunately I’ve had the unexplained pleasure of finding out 🙁. To me it seems that the shot happens when the deer may have exhaled and deflated the lungs partially.
Above however is above the spine. Just meaty tissue and a frustrating blood trail.

I have shot in front left, out rear right through and across the ribcage and missed the heart and both lungs. We know for sure because it went through both the front left and rear right knees and arteries.
The doe ran up on me on the ground and I swear I was defending myself. She was breathing heavy and the shot was low. She was above me about three feet above me.
Our best guess is the bullet went through while she was at full exhale. Took 3 hours of following tiny drops of blood through a logged woods on hands and knees to find her. About 2 1/2 hours in we realized the saplings were streaked with blood about 18 inches up. We ate that deer with serious contempt like it was our jobs.
