I would try hunting in the morning.I have always seen a lot more activity in the mornings than in the evenings.I rarely even hunt the evenings any more.About the only time do is when I want a change of pace, which is about twice in the last 10 years .

I got 5 this morning. They were busy all over the woods. It seemed like about every nut tree had 1 in it.A couple of them looked diseased though so I didn't keep any of them.I'm not hunting that woods anymore this year.

One of them looked mangy or something (bald spots all over it),and another one when I cleaned it had yellow spots and stripes all through the meat.It had two real big yellow stripes down along the sides of the back muscles and it smelled rotten.I didn't even mess with the rest because they were all in the same location and I figured they may have whatever the other two had.Just being cautious .

Went hunting Saturday morning in eastern green county. There were four of us and we split into pairs. The other party had choice of the woods and saw eight squirrels and took one. Don't ask me why they didn't get more! my hunting partner and I saw three but because of no clean head shots took passes on shooting a body shot. Friday morning however in northern Monroe county I saw two and shot one. Missed one cleanly and made an eye shot on the other. I used to make body shots but I really like the challenge of waiting and the making that shot. I'm not sure yet but the hunting may be picking up a little. At least in the mornings! How is everyone Else doing? Are you seeing any? These were in a mixture of hickory/ red, white oak groves with some beach trees as well. Where are you guys seeing them?

Squirrelhunter- Does anyone know what caused the squirrels to look diseased? I have not squirrel hunted for many years and do not recall seeing mangy looking squirrels, at worst might have seen a thin looking tail. HOwever, you are the second person in the last two weeks that has observed bald, nasty looking spots on squirrels. Do you see this often? I have just started hunting these critters again and am enjoying it, but do not want to mess with eating something that is going to make the fam sick.

In the 30 years I've hunted them this is the first time I've seen it.I dropped one of the others off at my dads to train his squirrel dog with, before I cleaned the one, but he wasn't home. After I saw what it looked like,I called him and told him what was going on.He called me back and said he called the Game Warden, who wasn't home, but his wife said she would tell him.I haven't heard anything about it yet so I don't know if he called dad back or not.

I went yesterday morning. The activity level is picking up a little as it seems within the last couple of weeks. Yesterday it was a bit slow because of the wind and the rain that just moved out. But I saw two and took them both home with me! One was a 40 to 50 yard shot and the squirrel was about 40 feet up in the tree looking at me from a branch. He looked at me a little too long though It was a head shot through the eye and out the other side! Dropped like a stone! The other not so impressive to me though. It was barking at something about 100 yards away. The stalk was on! In about three minutes the squirrel fell from the long horizontal branch into the awaiting leaves below. It was an off hand shot because it spotted me and I decided to go with a chest shot. I'm not as good as I should be with off hand shots. Anyway it pass though both lungs/heart and fell like a cowboy in an old western show. ajm

Went in the rain this a.m. with a buddy. I shot 1 gray and 1 fox. Buddy missed a fox. I gave him a buckeye I had found during the hunt for good luck after watching his shooting prowess.

I went Squirrel Hunting for the last time this year. Yesterday morning (9/30/05) was perfect no wind, cool and sunny. The only problem was I saw NO Squirrels or even heard any barking. This has been the poorest season I've have ever seen in my 43 years of Squirrel Hunting. There is plenty of mast/crops for them but all I saw is untouched hickory, acorns, beech, and walnuts lying under the trees. I think the IDNR should declare an emergency and close Squirrel season for the remainder of the year. I really see a problem developing, for the next several years, if we have another year without mast. I think they should shorten next years season making it August 15th to October 1st and drop the daily limit to three Squirrels.

drs, I know what you are talking about. In my woods this a.m. I saw only one small grey squirrel. This was in an area full of hickory where any other year I was all but guaranteed a limit whenever I hunted it. I don't know about the state, but in my little piece of Owen county the season IS CLOSED!!! I wouldn't feel right about killing any with these extremely low numbers. What part of SW Indiana do you call home by the way? Hoosier.

Hoosier, I to have closed my own property to Squirrel Hunting; as I don't feel that it is very prudent to harvest ANY number of Squirrels since their population is so low. The Woods, I hunted in for the past 43 years, is located in Daviess County near Glendale, In. I also hunt my 15 acres located in Vanderburgh County. I am hearing similar reports from other hunters too. The State needs to address this "lack-of- Squirrel" problem and maybe adjust next years' season. I use to hunt Rabbits alot, while growing up, but they have been in such low numbers since the late 1970's. I blame urban spraw and lawn chemicals on their decline.

Congratuations on your 17 Squirrels! It seems that areas above I-64 faired much better than the SW part of Indiana. Hope things change for the better next season. It should since there is an aboundance of mast crops this year.

This is a good thing for me too. I walk a mile before sun-up every morning; and this morning I saw Seven Deer, and one Rabbit. The strangest thing is I am not even seeing road killed Squirrels this year.
