WOW!!! August 15th has arrived. Always a red-letter day in this sportsman's book! I could not get into the woods opening morning as I went to a land auction but did get out this evening. Not much to report. Just heard one cutting but could not locate him. Those greys can sure hug a branch and dissapear when ya try to put the sneak on them with an eager 4-year old boy with ya ;D. A great trip anyway as the boy saw a turkey flush and took home a turkey feather in his hat. He was also introduced to nettles . They did not phase him much. Since the boy had a great outing the trip could not have been a bigger success!!! This is my first post here and I would like to say "howdy" to all my hunting brothers here. Looking forward to getting to know you. Thanks-hoosier.

Hey Hoosier!
Welcome to the site, and you'll find lots of experts here that can answer any hunting question you might have. No, I haven't been Squirrel Hunting yet but went out looking in the woods behind my home yesterday. I saw two young Fox Squirrels chasing around, but the squirrels ae not really cutting on hickory yet. My Dad always told me the peak time for Squirrel hunting is the first two weeks in September, when everything is ripe. I may slip out back today if it stops raining and the sun come out.

I got "sandbagged" at work and didn't get home until late . By the time I got there the heat was murder so I stayed inside . With a little luck I'll be out there today .

I went Squirrel Hunting yesterday afternoon, saw four Squirrels but could only shoot at one (which I didn't). Along comes a Doe and she starts snorting which scared the Squirrel off. Why is it that during SquirrelHunting the Deer come in and bother the Hunter and during Deer Season the Squirrels bother and pester the Deer Hunter?

I went again last evening and didn't see a squirrel! Ended up walking about 3 miles but did find some good places for the up coming archery season. I think it will be morning hunts for a while until it cools down. h.h.

I went to Atterbury today to use the range, but it was closed!! I have a .22 with me so I went and got a 1 day pemit and hunted area 12 and 13. It was so muggy and the bugs were horrible!! I didn't see a thing and the insects were so loud that I couldn't hear anything either. I will not go back until my bug suit comes in...and then I will go to private land to try my luck again.

I have hunted for quite a few years. I have been going to the areas where I have seen squirrels in the past. It seems that all they need is there (oak, hickory, beech, water) very mature forest area. The mast seem to be abundant! I have been hunting in the evenings and haven't found a single one. Is anyone else having a hard time this year? I was pretty successful last year but really had to look because of lack of mast, but did alright. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated!
Thanks ajm

I am also seeing fewer Squirrels so far this season, but may be due to the weather. However as you said, we had a very poor mast crop last year. When the mast or food supply is in short supplt; Squirrels tend to have few litters the following Spring.

It seems like in the early season they are generally more active in the mornings. I have always found the largest populations in say johnson county south to orange county. So the southern half of the state. Greys are incredibly adundant in the hilly and wooded terrain in this state. On a September hunt last year I saw in excess of 30 squirrels. Where I usually hunt for squirrels is on private land in Johnson Co. and they are thicker than thieves. Even in those woods, some days you can do everything right and it seems like the only life in the woods is YOU! Thats why they call it hunting! Wait to we get a little cool spell and I bet we start shooting some then. Good luck and keep us posted.

I wonder if since there seems to be plenty of mast are the squirrels scattered over a broader range? I wonder if around lakes and streams a person would find greater numbers of squirrels. That is since it has been so dry in the area we are in? The squirrels seem to be quite concentrated last year due to food supply. At least that was my uneducated observation.
