I squirrel hunted the last two evenings and didn't see a thing. Went on opening morning and saw five. Seems the squirrels are moving in the mornings right now. The ones i did see where cutting on hickory. h.h.

I've always seen more movement in the mornings, especially in the early part of the season on warm days.

ajm, I'll bet you are after grey squirrels. If so I wonder if you know that once in a great while greys can migrate out of their usual haunts. I know this may sound like hogwash but I have seen it happen a few times. Two years ago many hunting friends and I noticed this all over Greene and Owen counties. We don't know what triggers this and hopefully this is not what is happening in your area. Best of luck........Hoosier.

My Grandfather always told me when you hear a squirrel chattering in the woods don't just get annoyed at it pay attention. Sometimes it's chattering at a forest dweller say like a deer. Alwys look around very slowly when I hear one. Never saw a deer yet this way but did have one point a moose out to me once.

Anyone plan on going this weekend? I might go for a little while in my woods out back. I went yesterday but saw nothing, except a Wild Turkey Hen and four Deer. Not quite sure if this is going to be a very productive season since the mast crop, last year, was lacking. The weather need to cool down some for any good hunting too.

Hoosier, you are correct in thinking that I'm going after grey squirrels. The areas that I hunt are probably 99.9% greys. I am telling you that this area looks so likely that I cannot believe they are not there! I went this morning for about two hours. I have a hard time giving up on an area until all effort and strategies have been tried. Any advice would be helpful. Can always learn something from someone else's experiences.

Also if that area, you hunt, had no mast last summer, then this could also be the reason. GOOD LUCK hunting this season! ;D

I went hunting again today! This time a different place. The hickory trees were getting hit hard! It sounded like it was raining but it was the shells falling as they were cutting. I saw a total of four squirrels. I thought they would be grey but they looked to be fox. If you didn't notice by the above I got skunked. No excuses but a 22 is hard this time of year and first squirrel of the season jitters. Practice makes perfect and a rest for the rifle doesn't hurt either. It was a good hunt this evening activity started about 6.00 pm.

ajm, my best advice to you is simple,..........hunt'em where ya find'em!!! Something else you may consider is that squirrels use a lot of other trees to forage in. Watch the sugar maple and cherry trees early and don't discount poplar too (if you can see them way up there that is). If they are cutting hickory though , well you should have it made.

I am in the process of loading the truck right now in preparation for a morning hunt. I am going to an outstanding location with a buddy. Someone will get something for sure. I am going with my Marlin bolt-action topped with a Tasco 4X32. I got this thing dialed in to dime sized groups at 50 yards. Bug suit is in and the temp outside right now is pleasant. I'll report on what happens when I return.

Man, rough start to the season! I saw 1 squirrel and couldn't get a shot! They are cutting on nuts all over the place, but they are way up in the trees. I'll try when a few have come down and when the high temps dip into the low 70s.

I went this morning. I saw four and shot all four. They were cutting on hickory. Might go again in the morning as the temp is suppose to be 51. h.h.
