First, and foremost, this is not a bashing thread, and I am asking that everyone remain civil in their responses. For those of you who either hunt with crossbows or hope to if the new regulations are adopted: Why do you prefer a crossbow over a regular bow (compound/recurve/longbow)? I use a compound bow, and was just curious about the fascination with crossbows. Thanks.

My father is not one to get on forums such as these ..... but I can answer the question for him.
He hunts with a crossbow because he is not physically able to hunt with a compound or recurve. He hasnt really hunted with it much and has never even shot at a deer .... I think he plans to hunt with it more next year.

I'm excited about it mainly because with the way my eyesight is going, I will feel more confident with a scoped crossbow. I can still shoot a bow, but not nearly as accurate as I once could, and that hurts my confidence.

Lots of different reason why hunters will choose a xbow to hunt with, if allowed. Could be just that they want to use a weapon that they haven't used before....same as someone might choose to take a handgun out instead of a long gun. Not because it's easy or because it's harder, just because they can. Not allowing someone to use a certain weapon, be it any weapon is a barrier. If a game agency wants to increase opertunity (and a chance to increase a harvest) then they must find ways to remove barriers. Seems that this is what they have done. Imagine that one of the stakeholders is now taking credit for it. And he's also asking that any centerfire rifle be allowed from .243 on up. I say why not? Might as well remove all the barriers in one swoop. After all, it was a stakeholder who suggested it.

I use a compound bow, and was just curious about the fascination with crossbows. Thanks. Just another hunting tool to me. I've killed deer with recurves, compounds (2, 4 and 6 wheels), crossbows (recurve and compound), side hammer MZs, inline MZs , smooth bore shotguns, rifled slug guns, a Ruger .44 mag carbine and a '99 Toyota 4Runner. I could not pull back a hunting weight compound if my life depended on it. If I was not shoulder physically challenged, and the state allowed it, I would still hunt with my crossbow whenever I felt like. Most times I would use a compound. Lots of folks up in Canada use their vertical bows in the early part of the seson and switch to crossbows in the cold weather. Crossbows are no better nor worse than compounds..just another means to hunt deer, turkeys , whatever.. Different strokes for different folsk..

I've never hunted with a bow. Never owned one. But now that the DNR is going to allow crossbows to substitute for traditional archery tackle, I just might buy one if I can find one I can afford. I think it would be easier for someone at my age to become proficient with a crossbow faster than with a long bow given that I am used to shouldering firearms.

I think its mostly because their too lazy to learn how to shoot a compound. Except for the guys that are physically challenged.

How's the fishing going Dewey? Getting any bites? I'm guessing you didn't read the very first sentence in this thread..."First, and foremost, this is not a bashing thread, and I am asking that everyone remain civil in their responses."

I know a few guys that are lazy and physically challenged and mentally challenged enough to shoot a xbow and they can also shoot a compound bow better than you can. Want to bet?

I actually will still be using my Switchback during archery. I'm thrilled that I do have a choice now though. When the temp get down to around 10 degrees my X bow will come out. I am by far more accurate as of now with my vertical bow, especially in warmer weather, but I did have a blast in this years late season with my new Wicked Ridge Invader. It kept me in the Woods until Jan 2

My daughter is not physically capable of shooting a hunting weight vertical bow. She has shot and feel completely in love with crossbows. If this rule passes, she will be hunting more. Bringing more participants into the hunting world is reason enough for me to fully support this rule.

Hey Whiteoak, is that Invader pretty loud? That's the one I've been doing the most research on.

Loud compared to what? I dont know that any xbow will be as quiet as a typical compound.
Not even close. Just the nature of the beast.

With all the gadgets and gizmos out today I can have a chimp shooting groups with a vertical bow in 20 minutes. When you start using a 50 lbs vintage Bear Kodiak and cedar arrows with hand cut barred turkey feathers with a shooting glove as your only accessory, you have no idea the true meaning of the sport of archery and what lazy means in terms of a skilled archer.
