I use a crossbow NOT because I am lazy or do not want to dedicate the time involved to shoot a "vertical" bow. After some injuries and corrective surgeries, and the "aging factor," I am NO longer physically capable of manually drawing a bow and executing the shot process without enduring extensive pain. I was advised by my doctor and surgeons that IF I wished to remain active as an archery hunter to "consider" switching to a crossbow. I NEVER had anything against a crossbow or the people that used them but I always said, "AS LONG AS I CAN DRAW A BOW BACK, I WILL HUNT WITH ONE." Little did I realize that someday, I would be faced with the decision of either swiching to a crossbow or leaving the sport that I have loved and enjoyed since 1964. I coul;d NOT enjoy shooting and having the pain. What kind of fun is that? I also did NOT want to risk making a bad shot or getting a bad hit on a deer so the decision became quite simple. I get all kinds of remarks from other bowhunters about NOT being a TRUE BOWHUNTER but the crossbow has allowed me to remain able to hunt WITHOUT enduring the pain. I have hunted with crossbow now for three years and I have taken 8 whitetail using it, I would prefer to use the compund bow but can no longer do it. I say.. "USE WHATEVER WORKS FOR YOU" and forget about "bashing" someone else.... i am and still in the same boat, and thanks d.n.r. for having a permit to allow us guys to continue to hunt(open heart surgery, nothing but pain while drawing a compound, boy i do sure miss hunting with the compound) , i had some of my best years archery hunting with my grandson, i would not been able if the cross-bow wasn't a option...(9 years so far with cross-bow). i am glad d.n.r. is opening up cross-bow to all in archery season......now if we can get tele-checking in ,i would be a very happy hunter........ .................turkey scout

I have never hunted with a xbow but I cannot imagine it being easier to hunt with than a compound. I have no desire to try one but I know one day in order to continue participating in the sport that I so dearly love I will have to put down the vertical bow and pickup the crossbow. Until then I will gladly share the woods with and hunt alongside all fellow archers whether it be by longbow, compound or crossbow!

I don't even see why easy is an issue. Look at the hundreds of products that are not shunned that have made hunting easier over the years. If it is easier, it still won't effect a hunt of someone that doesn't want to use one.

Im still a fence sitter on this one.
Too many decades of working up a QUIET setup just has me put off from an Xbow......even though I think it TOO would be fun.
No offense to anyone but still not suscribing to the thought that the noise isnt an issue due to speed. Ive seen deer be TOTALLY gone at 20 yards when a 250fps arrow gets there and just not accepting that another 50 fps or so will be enough to not get poor hits. They are fast critters, like it or not. 400 fps I might buy into it a LITTLE but still and all that is slow compared to their ability to move a mere 6 inches and give me grief.
NOT saying I know it all but just dont make sense, mathmatically, and from what Ive seen with my dirt brown eyeballs.
MIGHT end up trying one for giggles. Might be all it takes but the BIGGEST hurdle I have to personally get over is the freaking COST of a decent one......when only wanting to TRY one. Holy Moly.
Yep, I can see a big advantage for MY prefered method of hunting from the ground, that being less movement but unless I come up with some swapperoo on a gun I got a deal on for one.......I just cant get past the cost of a good one and KNOW I wont like a junk one.
Someone start a "Crossbow Rentals" store......ok?
Probably supported my tightwad rep with this but high buck GUNS I can live with. I know and love them well but still see issues hunting with a crossbow......for me personally only, but perhaps it may come yet that I bite the bullet.
NOT GOOD hunting with a weapon, ANY weapon, you dont have confidence in, IMHO, and there-in lies MY personal issues with one.
Every time I have ever heard one fired.......I flinch, thinking of the POSSIBLE problems that could cause, poor hit wise.
2 cents, probably not worth that. Sorry if off base but going on lots of experience on deer "jumping" the string on QUIET bows and , as I said, are WAY gone when the arrow got there but maybe I got high strung deer to hunt?
God bless

OK all you crossbow hunters, present and future, just what does one of those contraptions cost? And no, I'm not going to buy one, I'm still trying to justify the boat load of money I got in a PCR that I got 4 years ago.

I think I paid $350 for my used Barnett Revolution & 6 bolts on flea-bay a few years ago. It came with a EOTech Holosight . I spent another $140 or so on a Vari-Zone scope rings and mount. I forget how much the string cocker was, then I bought 100g HyperShock expandables. Then a good bag target so I could get the arrows out of the target. (Thanks Woody for the recommendation on a target)
All in all, I probably have spend $600-$700 on it.

Until then I will gladly share the woods with and hunt alongside all fellow archers whether it be by longbow, compound or crossbow! How hunting with a compound is easier for me: I can hide behind my bow when i need to, nearly impossible with an xbow. I can hold my Vbow back at full draw longer than i can hold an xbow up (freehand) with better accuracy. I have more range of motion with my Vbow, i can shoot a deer almost directly behind me while in the stand, almost impossible to do with an Xbow. I can sit comfortably in a climber with my Vbow, its a real pain with an Xbow. Last but not least, if needed i can shoot a quiver full of arrows with a Vbow before you can put a second arrow on the string of a Xbow. Just my findings

I hunt with a PSE and would rather archery hunt than any other hunting, but what i would like about it is it would help get my kids in the woods more and maybe even the wife

I really think this is not an issue to worry about - most gun hunters who don't archery hunt currently will not go out get a crossbow. The impact will be minimal.
The DNR needs to work on tag prices and bag limits. By viewing kills from last year very few hunters are seeing higher deer numbers so to me that is a bigger issue than a crossbow.

Check the classified ads on Archety Talk , you may be surprised at what they are going for.

He went to the "great Outdoors" in Jasper and bought a Ten Point xbow package ..... came with the xbow, Ten Point scope, quiver, bolts, broadheads and a soft sided case. He has a very hard time resisting that worm dangling in front of him .... by the time I heard about it he had been hooked, landed and mounted. I easily have $2k invested in 2 hunting compounds .....

Try Craigslist for both selling and buying bows and xbows

I know the Bowtech 2011 crossbow is a grand....and while other GOOD ONES are somewhat less, I was looking at what supposedly was "the fastest".
Probably others in that same range but I stopped looking at that point. AT THIS POINT.......I cant justify it but admit I would LIKE TO try it.
Buying USED archery equipment with lots of moving parts scares this ol boy silly, unless I KNOW the seller, and then Im "cautious". lol
Too old to change now, folks
God Bless

High end crossbows are very comparible to high end compounds In price , around a $1,000. If just want a crossbow to try out, you can probly find a lesser model for half that. Still very reliable and capable of killing a deer just not with all the bells and whistles of the high end stuff.
